Very nice summary. Although mortgages are long term commitments homeowners can still look for better deals in the re-mortgage market. First you need to see if you can get out of your current mortgage without penalty or with minimum penalty. Then wait for the best rate offers and calculate how much you would pay if you were to remortgage your home with another lender. Even you save $100 per month after the costs are paid that is a lot of money over the term of 20 years mortgage.
This could be a great time to consolidate high interest debt into long term low interest mortgage if you have equity in your home. With the savings you will achieve you can pay a lump sum every year towards paying off your mortgage. After a lump sum payment you can decide to either reduce the term or reduce the monthly payments.
My family lives 10,000 miles away, and Skype helps me a lot by cutting the international call bills. It went from spending several hundred dollars every couple of months to practically zero dollar. Thank you, Skype!
A very good article, and a fairly comprehensive list! We're not drinkers. My wife's son started making homemade ale, and she wanted me to try. Not including the initial outlay of funds for equipment, one kit costs around $25 and makes two case of ale, which last us about 6 months. And once you've made homemade ale or stout, you can never, ever go back to commercial beer!
My favorite way to save money is to use coupon and retail promotion sites. This way it shows me the best deals and if there is a promo code to use either online or at a retail store. While it may only be 10% to 20% off your total amount, that eventually adds up. I put the amount of what I save into my savings account.
I designate a jar for savings and attach a label to it that says "Travel Fund" (or whatever financial goal I'm saving for). This has been the most fun and effective way for me to save money because it makes my goal feel so much more tangible. I also feel so much guiltier taking cash out of my dedicated savings jar to make a purchase than I would swiping my debit card.
We use skype to stay in touch with relatives in foreign countries. Recently I used it to talk to my cousin in Australia and also a friend in England. So much cheaper than international calling and I love being able to see my lived ones
My favorite way to save money is by shopping for my three growing kids at the thrift store. On Saturdays, they have 50% off, so whenever they need clothes, that's where we go. I could spend $15/child and it goes so much further than going to a dept store.
My favorite way to save money is to plan ahead! We have a budget for things that we spend in a month and we always set aside a certain amount to save first; it's not even part of the money that we consider for spending. We also plan for emergencies and have an emergency fund to take care of those. Without a plan, how can you get to where you want to go?
I have 4 large dogs and we feed them a high quality grain free food. We also cook for our dogs. I buy whole chickens when the price drops below 99 cents a pound and we feed them a mix of chicken meat, white rice and vegetables from our garden. Cooking for our dogs is actually a little cheaper than commercial dog food. My dogs are much leaner and healthier and have beautiful coats. There also isn't as much clean up in the yard because they are absorbing more nutrients from the real food they are given.
There are three things where I spend more or less on a monthly basis. The first one is definitely the lawn costs. That costs me a lot every month. But from now on I’ll get some time on my weekends, especially in the morning to do that stuff myself. I’ll also ask my husband to help me out. Another cost, though minimum, is late fees on various counts. I regularly forget the dates and end up paying late fees. That’s annoying. I’ll keep a note of that I a notebook. In fact, I have already started maintaining that. Another cost is Phone Bill. Though Skype cannot b the substitute but still I’ll make the long distance and long duration calls from Skype itself.
Being a single parent, one one income, with children who love to drink milk.......I try to go to the market in the evening because this the time most stores mark down their products. After most of my shopping, I go to the refrigerated area where the milk is. I check to see which milks have sale labels because when the stamped date is near they can't sell it anymore and they discard it. We all have drank milk past the date and it was fine. OK, I pick out the gallons I want (usually 4) and ask to talk to the Manager. Of course, you can pick out your own quantity. When the Manager meets me, I explain the milk is getting ready to expire and I would like to purchase each gallon for one dollar. I have not ran into one manager who said "no". They go get a new label and away I go. I freeze the milk that we don't need immediately but I can use it to cook with and believe me my children don't notice the "watmilk" as long as there is "milk" in the frig. This little trick has really saved me and it can be any kind you like--I buy whole milk. I found this tid-bit a long time ago in a Save-It article.
The best and easiest, in my view, is to continuously add small amounts to an stock market index fund which serves as an IRA. Even better if it's a Roth IRA.

Thanks. I will check those out!
My hubby and I use Skype when he travels out of town for business. It is a great way to keep in touch, saving a ton of money on long distance :)
I would add making your own beer to the list.

In addition to Myth #1 I also have a high monthly Home Owners Association Fee!! That kills me every time. I can't even write that off in my taxes!

I save money using bank account. Really useful. My dream goal now is to be able to let my daughter finish her schooling.
