As far as job scams go, I also have gotten responses back from jobs saying that the position has been filled and that they are looking for a personal assistant "who can be trusted... make pick ups and deliveries on their behalf and have stuff mailed to [me]" etc.
I love this article, Kate! As a full-time freelancer, I'm always looking for ways to secure my income, as it can be quite feast or famine month to month. My husband is a teacher and he's definitely considered doing some of those "first job" jobs you mentioned. Can't wait to show this to him!
Interesting ways to earn extra cash! Find ways to earn extra income may take a little time and effort but you might be surprised at how much more money you can make by selling items or doing odd jobs. Think about how you can turn your hobbies into a potential side job. Garage sales are great too!
Oh when we do our spring cleaning, first on our list is always our windows! One tip I learned a couple years ago, was when we are cleaning our screens, if you have a small hole....you can put clear nail polish on it so bugs wont come in!
My favorite tip is to break it up into a little each day. I have a checklist of things I do every day, (dishes, and sweep) and then everything else is once a week on a certain day Monday through Friday. I dislike spending hours on a weekend cleaning. It feel manageable this way!
Love the granola bar tip!
I actually always bring food with me when I travel. If I allow myself to get really hungry I get headaches and only think about getting food. I've never considered granola bars, though. I usually take dry cookies or waffles, but granola bars are so much better.
Noted for my next trip:)
Great list! If you can't afford 2 suits at first, I'd go with just the black one. It works for most situations. Also I love the oxford shirts that are more casual with a small to medium grid. They work for many situations, dress and casual. They look great with jeans or a suit!
I agree to get a decent quality suit. My husband bought a gray suit many years ago & it still works for any occasion that comes up. He even wore it to our daughter's wedding & it looked great. That's pretty good since he bought it about 5 years before she was born!
Good things to be on the lookout for! It's easy to fall into the trap of retailer tricks. If you find yourself debating whether a daily deal or free shipping is worth it, take a few minutes and think about if it benefits you in the long run. It may seem like a good deal now but chances are it may not help you out in the long term. Try to keep that in mind when you purchase items.
Number 5 is my favourite. I always try to clean during the down times... and mostly end up washing utensils I still need. The real problem is cleaning after myself once I'm done cooking.
Great tips, especially Sophie's trick of clearing your cookies. My travel secret is granola bars: I take a few along on every trip. They' re worth their weight in gold when that moment comes when there's no food nearby, or no food you can afford or stomach. I've eaten them in the bush and at five-star hotels when the coffee shop was closed. One thought on carry-ons: they're handy, but if you have a long layover, you're wandering the airport with all your luggage, as I found in my latest post.
I’ve been working at Outback for the past 5 years and the rule on fryers has changed a lot. The cleanser machine thingy cleans the oil only one time and it gets dumped out and new one gets put in a day later so it’s not sitting in 4 day old oil!
Using household items (vinegar, baking soda, rubbing alcohol, lemons, oranges or essential oils) to make your own natural cleaning solutions without all the harsh chemicals.
I'm a big fan of setting up automatic transfers from checking to savings using my bank's online services (as in #3), but I like to have the amount transferred differ each month. I think an easy way to save is by starting with a low transfer amount and having it gradually increase each month (the same principle as the "52 week savings plan" that's been floating around). If the increase is gradual and you start at a small amount to begin with, you almost don't even perceive that money going 'away' (to savings), but before you know it, you've managed to save up a good chunk of money. I don't set it up to transfer on a payday, but rather on the first of the month. I just treat it like a bill - a bill that I pay to myself.
Great list. I'd add a couple pairs of shoes that lay between your suit shoes and sneakers. A pair of boat shoes for casual outings in the summer and a pair of fun, funky, colored shoes in a color you wear often are both good bets which are more refined than sneakers but not as formal as the dress shoes you mention. Keep being stylish!
I actually found that reading in the morning helps sharpen my mind. Whether it's my book, the newspaper or even -- though this is my least favorite -- studying for my series 62 exam. If my mind is moving when I walk out the door, I'm on my game.
Great article! I could pare down my husband's wardrobe!
Now, can you do the same thing for women?

It's amazing how versatile that simple grain can be. Happy cooking!

Good choice in photo! That is essentially the look that my toddler gives me when I tell her not to put the cat in the dryer.

Hey Paul,

Fantastic List! Some of the things, like Amazon Prime took me by surprise, so I am glad you brought them up!

I've really got to check out the facebook group function. Between the fees and time it takes to sell and ship on ebay, it's just not worth it.

Good article overall, but its strange that you failed to mention free telecommuting and collaboration platforms, like Bitrix24

I use baking soda and vinegar to clean the toilet. Works great!
I'm so surprised that we can cook rice in 25 more different ways. I will try and cook some of the recipes listed here next week. :)

I'm not a big cleaner... But my biggest tip is to get in the habit of cleaning every Sunday evening, so everything is good for the week!
MY ob-gyn Dr. always suggested that I use witch hazel on my stitches after birth
