  • Frugality and the Myth of Self-Denial   13 years 6 weeks ago

Derek, you are so right about the many levels and individual approaches to frugality. My husband and I are careful spenders who splurge on things we love. Three weeks ago we bought a baby grand piano for $1,130 (this includes a free tuning). A thousand dollars sounds like a lot of money to some people (and it certainly is to me). The price of a new baby grand is unthinkable to us. We feel that as long as we remain debt-free except for an extremely rare occasion, we are living frugally. We continue to be amazed at our friends and acquaintances who think nothing of carrying thousands of dollars in debt.

I read a Harry Potter book before going to bed. It's something purely for me, and it makes for awesome dreams. :)

They are very impressive stars. This only proves that even celebrities who have more than enough money are still frugal with their spending, then why can't we who have far better less than them. It is just a matter of discipline and correct mind-setting.

  • How to Take Advantage of Free Extended Warranty From Your Credit Card Issuer   13 years 6 weeks ago

Yes I have used Visa's extended warranty on a set of TV Headphones, similar to TV Ears, but with wireless headphones. I had all of the documentation and faxed it to Visa. In very short time I received a replacement set of headphones. They were classified as reconditioned but they appeared to be new, just without the original container. Very satisfied with the ease and the response from Visa

Yes, it's very hard to win on price when you're competing with people who earn almost nothing (like textile workers in Bangladesh, for example). Winning on price is by no means the only important thing to consider, but it is a factor to take into account, so your example (prioritizing home decor) makes good sense.

I am trying to grow in this area... I have always cooked but have added gardening in the last few years, and have very basic rain barrels since we just moved to the desert and that makes more sense than ever!

I have also started to sew throw-pillow cases and curtains for my house, which is much cheaper than buying ready-made items. My sewing instructor said that while it is hard to save money sewing your own clothes these days (I think I'd be afraid to be seen in any clothing I sewed, anyway!), you can save tons of money in home decor. Since I love to decorate, this has been a very satisfying project to take on.

I would love to learn more about canning, and invest in some solar panels to take advantage of the near-constant sun here in New Mexico. I'm also interested in learning how to store more drinking water long-term since we get so little rain here.

Depends on what is available and how much time I have, or need to relax, but I may listen to classical music, play basketball, watch TV, read, or meditate.

Calm down! It's not child abuse to dress your child in hand-me-downs. She in entitled to do whatever she wants with the money she worked hard to earn. It's not like the clothing she's dressing her child in is filthy and holey. Google him for goodness sake. He looks fine to me. Perhaps when he gets older, he'll tire of wearing hand-me-downs and decide to get a job in order to buy his own clothing. And. . . lesson learned. Besides, if he's like any other teenager, he's buying his clothes from the thrift store anyway.

I take long hikes with my dogs in the woods. Then sit on the deck with them and read books, magazines, whatever.

I have a couple of things, love to walk outside if the weather is good. Sometimes reading or baking does the trick too.

During the work day I take an early lunch and generally have the lunchroom to myself, I plug in some ear plugs to my smartphone and play a puzzle game to let go of the frustration. Then when I get home my DH and I exchange the worst part of the day stories while we cook so we can enjoy conversation about completely different and unrelated topics during dinner and the rest of the evening.

My favorite way to relax is taking a long walk with my husband and dogs. It really helps clear my mind after a long, stressful day. I also relax by listening to music, taking a drive (when gas isn't too expensive!), reading, and watching TV.

  • Why You Shouldn't Eat at Chain Restaurants   13 years 6 weeks ago

C'mon, if you have developed a grownup palate, you should know better than to ever think that chains are a good deal. Anyone who is already in their Mid 30s that has not began to expand their horizons is choosing to stay ignorant as far as options. Most chains are serving you the same crapola you can whip up at your own kitchen, some use exclusively pre-made, frozen and canned. Most have not a care whether they are serving foods with GMOs, pre frozen fish or steaks pumped with sodium and antibiotics.l Any resto that has ketchup, BBQ sauce (aside form a BBQ joint), is basically saying" Our steaks are so crappy, you need to cover them up with this here A1 sauce".

I am not saying you should shun them from your life, but there are 100s of better choices in going to the independently owned, mom/pop or chef run locale. The only way I am getting to eat at any chain is because of my mom and the 2 office lunches hosted by my employer (b/c the owner's assistant has a fear for good food). My mom... she never developed a fine palate and would not be able to appreciate a steak at Rathbuns'. she orders everything "well done" which is awful, so I am ok with meeting her up at her beloved Suburban "Bahama Breeze". I am partial to Pappadeaux for a brunch here and there (like 1 time a year) but otherwise, I DO NOT EAT at chains EVER, not since I turned 35 and know how to appreciate real food, and expect to try good things, not food I used to eat in my 20s, when I did not know better!

  • Best Money Tips: Tips for Handling Money Together   13 years 6 weeks ago

YES! I've been looking for blogs about couple's finance. Recently my boyfriend and I started a home business and had started to feel it straining our relationship, mainly the finance aspect. A friend of mine had suggested using a third party accountant like those from www.goodaccountants.com to search for an accountant to handle our finances. would you recommend this move? If so, are there other websites/companies you would recommend for accountants? Thanks so much for the insight!

I love cooking. That is probably the one thing I make a point to do every day besides get up and go to work. I like to be in control of how my food tastes, what I eat, what goes in to it, ect.
