Don't be ashamed Diva, if you are doing your best for the moment. Remember what other people think of you is none of your business (one of my favorite sayings) :) Our kids always have to come before our pride.
I love all the judgemental comments. I seriously wonder if some of you would spit on the homeless man holding up a sign in a busy intersection, or otherwise persecute and individual down on their luck. Don't forget a lot of people who find themselves in need have been working and paying TAXES for YEARS. So they are moochers, eh? I firmly believe that none of you preaching have ever found yourself in need with nowhere to turn, even abandoned by your families? Do you volunteer to help a neighbor who needs a babysitter so s/he can work? No? Then really, really lets hope you're never in need! Remember, that karma can be a cruel mistress. Many won't give others a hand up, yet spite them for a hand out. Oh, and don't forget there are A LOT of people working, but don't make enough because, again, a lot of you believe a low minimum wage is good for the economy. Be glad for your own safety and the safety of your loved ones, that 'these people,' are not wandering around like hungry wolves. If you want to end all social programs, take a look at the conditions in Brazil and the Philippines (where kidnappings are common to extract money from the well to do). With downsizing, outsourcing jobs to China, insourcing immigrants--the rape of the economy in general--many are struggling to make ends meet. If you are young and strong and are against subsidized health insurance, can work 2 jobs if need be, just see what happens when you get older and cannot. Oh wait, you tell us you're a wise investor, have a big nest egg in the bank? The next bubble is on it's way, so you you'd better buckle down! Next time you look down your nose at someone using an EBT card and want to dehumanize him or her, you'd better hope beyond hope that you are never in his/her place. The bible says: "Judge not, so ye not be judged." What it really means that you ARE this person you judge (under different circumstances), and you won't need anyone else to judge you because you'll judge yourself realizing, at that point, your hypocrisy. I believe it's why many people jump off bridges when they get down on their luck. If I am in that position and hear you say anything while I'm checking out. I'm going right up to your face and say: "if you have anything to say, I'd prefer you say it to my face." And those of you on food stamps et al, instead of hanging down your head in embarrassment or shame, you do the same. Hold your head high and call these folks out.
To keep it frugal, I will shopnusing coupons or buy online deals on sites such as groupon.com or livingsocial.com. They have great deals on massages and various services or travel. My favorite Mother's Day tradition is barbecuing with my family and spending quality time with them playing games and catching up!
If I win, please give my gift card to Jenny D. Thank you so much Jenny D for the sacrifice your family has made to protect mine. Happy Mother's Day to you and every mother out there with a daughter/son in the military! Thank you, so very much, for your service. My deepest respect and appreciation for all that you do.
or when your husband buys you a bottle of perfume you saw in the store and wanted and then on the way home says "I hope I have money for the bills now" yeah, nice!!!
We usually go to a nearby historic city that has local resident days where admission to the historic forts are only 50 cents instead of $12.50 each! We take a picnic lunch and go hiking, just having fun and being together on Mother's Day. It's lovely. Can't wait for tomorrow!
Why wouldn't you pay half if you are sharing the place? If you are sharing bills and make similar wages I think it is perfect if you either split all bills down the middle or choose a few bills each that equal out.
The reality is usually you pay less for a mortgage than for rent, based on a 30 year loan. Also, if you are opposed to paying half what happens if something g breaks? Will you help out with that? If not I think you should pay slightly more than half, as the true cost to maintain the house incurs fixing it also.
And if you are planning on buying into a new place you better get those problems hashe'd out or you will really regret it. Regardless of what you do on the home, what you determine as household responsibilities should be shared equally.
Now any past debt or assets would be another discussion, if those things are not resolved first resentment can eat away at a relationship.
I like how Suzie Orman approaches money, helping each other in the good and bad of times and learn to work together.
Great to hear an enquiry from a fellow South African. No, I cannot help you with an answer, but just today bought the same model BD-J5500 in Cape Town. Have any of the experts out there being able to help you and if so, can you please help me?
If it's thier "first time marrying each other", it should be celebrated. Why should the past be permitted to cast a shadow on a new beginning? That's not moving forward, that's looking in the rear view mirror. Celebrate your new love the way you want. I think eliminating celebratory rituals because of the past is cheating your new partner and making a statement that the first was more important than the NOW.
I go to my bank occasionally. Recently, my teller told me I was eligible to upgrade our checking account. I wouldn't have know otherwise and once I did, (it was really easy), we now get over 5 times as much interest in our account!
I have driven for Uber. It is NOT a job for anyone who wants to make money. If you work ONLY the busiest hours, you may be lucky enough to GROSS $25-$30/hr. From that comes your gas, the money you're putting aside for taxes (YOU ARE, AREN'T YOU?), money for parts and repairs on your car (which you're wrecking by putting on all these miles), and money for insurance. Of course, if you get in an accident, your insurance company will not cover you because you didn't tell them you were using your car for Uber, because you know if you did they would have thrown you out forthwith. On the dead hours, you may not gross minimum wage. Read what experienced drivers have to say on Uberpeople.net. Don't be a sucker.
I'm not sure you understand the economics of housing in some areas. In Los Angeles, for example, renting an apartment near where you work can cost more than buying a house farther away and commuting. Studio apartments were running a minimum of $1,600 near my job, and 18 miles away, in a reasonable (not great) neighborhood, I bought a small house to fix up for $1,200 in mortgage, property insurance AND property taxes (I put enough down not to pay PMI). Using public transportation to commute, it's much less to own than to rent and I'm building equity every month. The extra $400 per month has been going to my DIY repairs, and taking care of the deferred maintenance is increasing the value of the house.
Please do the math - spending $200-$300 more per month for an apartment with a fitness center? A gym membership can cost $35 per month, why would you waste $165-$265 for that building? You can work from home without a business center, as I do some days, and take the bus to a Zipcar pick-up location if you choose to car-share.
Just a couple more ideas. Bring a tape measure. Instead of kid's clothes sizes, take measurements, as different manufacturer's size things differently. If you're trying to accessorize your home or person, bring color swatches. Sometimes neighborhoods give clues to what will be offered. Developments tend to have new stuff. Kid's clothes, toys, household gadgets that didn't make the cut. But older neighborhoods tend to have treasures. Words like "moving sale" or "estate sale" are ad buzz words there. Older neighborhoods more often have older, better made furniture, vintage finds, collections, wider variety of kitchen equipment, hand tools, items garnered from travel. With the proliferation of online yard sale sites, photographs help you know what kind of sale to anticipate. Bring a water bottle with you and snacks.
I'm like you. It's easier to understand stocks, so I personally prefer to own shares of companies involved in the industries. For most investors, it makes more sense to invest in a company like Exxon than to mess around with oil futures.
My mom is usually just happy to see me and spend a little time with me on Mother's Day, so I usually get her a card and some small token gift and go visit her for a while. I try to stay in touch and go to lunch or dinner with her throughout the year, so it's not such a rare thing that HAS to be done on Mother's Day.

This is something I have been wondering about, too. I would love to sign up with Uber but, as a woman, I'm concerned about my safety.
At 8 dollars an hour with wear and tear on your car plus gas your not going to make any money
