  • Ask the Readers: Do You Rent or Own Your Home?   13 years 38 weeks ago

After 5 years of renting, my husband and I just bought our first home. Rent was getting to the point that if we moved to a 2 bedroom apt. (we are expecting our first child), we would basically be paying the same amount we would for a mortgage. it just made sense to us to have something that is ours and that we can build some equity on...someday! as far as mantaince goes, even though we have a single family, stand alone home, we belong to an HOA and won't have to take care of the grass, lawn, or snow...a big deal in WI.

ps-it took 5 years for us to come up with a good downpayment....with rising rent prices, we knew it would only get harder to save.

This really is helpful. For a internet marketer like me who is kinda a newbie this helps me to relax. My biggest problem is once i sit in front of the laptop I do not move from it all day. By the time I move, my eyes hurt and its dark outside. I am learning to take breaks and fresh air.

We own our home, and it is just great for us. I am so thankful that the value was high when we built it, so that now as the value has gone down, we are not underwater on our mortgage. We may have lost value on paper, but it is priceless to us. Watching our children grow up here has been such a blessing.

We own and I wouldn't trade it for anything. We can grow anything we want and landscape the way we want and have animals.

I own my condo. Well, technically the bank owns it until it's paid off but you know what I mean. :)

  • Line Drying Your Laundry: Frugal or Foolish?   13 years 38 weeks ago

So I am wondering if anyone else has this issue...we have 3 cats (indoors) so our clothes are very cat hairy (even with frequent brushing). The dryer removes the cat hair, but if we hang our clothes outside the hair dries to the clothes. We have tried shaking them out before and after hanging them up with no luck. Throwing them in the dryer for a few minutes helps a little bit. I would love to hang my laundry outside more, but it's not worth having to roll all my clothes with sticky sheets after. Also, I love drying my clothes in the winter in the dryer. When it starts to get cold I disconnect my dryer duct from the wall and hook it up to this doodad (sorry, I don't know what it is) that traps any extra lint for you, but the warm moist air fills my house! I figure I am already paying for running the dryer, I should get the heat too (again, only when it is cold). The moisture is nice too since it is very dry in the winter. My parents have been doing that with their dryer since the 70's without issue, but people often seem surprised when I tell them about it. Also, the clothes dry in about 20 minutes compared to 40 in the summer when the duct is connected to the wall.

we live in an affordable city in central canada. We bought out home almost 18 years ago and the mortgage was a 15 year one, so it's been paid off for a couple of years. Even though I would like to move to a better house someday, I am glad to have the security of this home, it's fine--not a new home, not a fancy show home. We have three kids, now young adults and it's been a good home to raise the kids in... so we aren't going anywhere. I don't think my husband would ever want to start paying a mortgage again, so we will make do with our accomplishment of our paid for home.

    We own.
Reasons we got out of renting?
-Tired of putting money in someone else's pocket
-Tired of sharing a wall with obnoxious neighbors and all of their problems
-Tired of not being able to decorate the way that we wanted
    -Couldn't have a pet
    Reasons we love owning?
    -Building equity and tax advantages
-Having a yard or at least an easement between us and the neighbor
-Being able to decorate and do what you want to the inside and outside of your place
-The ability to have a furry friend

Sure, you are responsible for your own maintenance. But for us, the advantages far outweighed the risks.

  • 8 Creative Uses for K-Cups   13 years 38 weeks ago

On the K-Cups, my family found that we could use the cups three and sometimes four times without a loss of taste or delight. We keep the "started" cups in a baggie in the freezer. We also mark one-two-three or four slash (/) marks in heavy ink on the cup "lid." After we mark the cup three times because of three uses we usually throw them away.

Now, we will not throw them but will recycle one of the ways suggested in the article. Fun!

We rent & I love it! We pay $800/mo., way cheaper than most mortgage payments. It's only gone up once in the 5 years we've lived here. We have a nice 3 bedroom colonial in an equally nice neighborhood. If we have any problems with the house, we call up our maintenance man & he takes care of it.

I rent. Event though I tried to get my girlfriend to rent an appartment, we ended up renting a house; which I suppose is ok, its a place to sleep but I think it is better to rent for these reasons:

-If somthing breaks, the landlord fixes it. I don't know about you but I don't have $500.00 sitting in my bank (though I should) for a new water heater.

    -Landlord pays property tax.

-Most appartments come painted white. Which is fine in that it will save you from buying paint, but also it acts like a blank canvis to decorate how you want!

-With an appartment there is no grass to cut! Especially in the scorching heat of the summer cutting grass is one of my least favorite chores.

-Almost all apartments have either central or an air conditioner. Currently, the house we are renting doesn't have central installed, so we have an AC in the living room and the bead room.

We rent from my in-laws. We have invested a lot in their property as well, so kind of a mixture of both, I suppose.
