Sorry you're offended, Val. It was meant as an innocent joke. So innocent in fact that I didn't say anything about sitting around eating bon bons all day. It was just a quick quip about Middle American women's love of Pinterest, which is also a fact, by the way: http://www.ignitesocialmedia.com/social-networks/pinterest-demographic-d...

My apologies once again. Thanks for the comment. Have a great day!

  • The Freedom of a Debt-Free Life   13 years 39 weeks ago

I am trying to get rid of all debt as we speak! We are now down to mortgage debt only and will have our house paid off in 3.5 years at age 36.

At that point, we plan on increasing our retirement saving, traveling abroad with our children, and possibly exploring other career opportunities.

Then we are going to retire early. I do understand getting a mortgage but all other debts suck your life away.

  • How to Host an Awesome Frugal Movie Night   13 years 39 weeks ago

I've never hosted a movie night, but just like you said, the expensive ticket prices limited movie-going for me and my wife. Back then, we'd go watch a movie every other week. But now, we only go to the movies once or twice a year.

  • Running the Numbers: Living on One Salary   13 years 39 weeks ago

We were debt free for 1 year before I quit my job to be a SAHM. I've got a masters degree and 10 years of professional experience, with 6 years of service/retail experience before that. I earned 60% of our family's income when I quit. I'd been miserable for 3 years, and was bringing everyone down with me. I didn't have time for myself, my kids or my husband. It was awful all the way around. So we decided the best thing to do would be for me to finally quit.

However, it was something in the back of our heads since before we got married. We chose to live well below our means even when that meant as a grad student and while my husband struggled to find a fulltime job with his BS in Computer Engineering, that we ate a lot of ramen and lived in a tiny apartment and had no social life. We'd take walks together instead of going to pricey movies. We'd go to the library to borrow movies instead of paying for cable. That way of living just stuck with us. I grew up in a poor home so it wasn't any different for me.

Now, 10 years after we got married, we've paid off our mortgage (in 6.5 years), paid cash for 2 "new to us" cars, paid off all the student loans we had and paid cash for $30k in home repairs over an 8 year period. We also had extensive medical bills even with insurance.

I don't have an i-anything, a designer-anything, I'm the family barber, cook, maid, baker, gardener, chauffeur, seamstress, secretary, bargain hunter, etc, etc, etc. DH is the family handyman, mechanic, plumber, electrician, IT support specialist.

I earn a side income doing freelance writing, which I started 2 1/2 years before I quit my job. It's something I enjoy and feel good about. I'm able to contribute to my Roth IRA still and then anything leftover I use for my hobby (needlework) or for extra activities for my kids (swimming lessons) or for birthday and holiday gifts.

  • 4 Reasons Why Everyone Needs Side Income   13 years 39 weeks ago

What you didn't mention is that another benefit of a side job, or part time job, is that it means you won't be "unemployed" if you are laid off. A significant number of hiring managers are unwilling to hire unemployed people to fill open positions, so when you're looking for a new job, you can truthfully say that you ARE employed.

It also makes you look like you're not lazy; you won't fit the stereotype of someone who's happy just to sit back and take unemployment (even though we know that's not an accurate stereotype).

I'm making a big move soon, and sold some of my old clothes and jewelry at Plato's Closet. They don't give you much for your items, but it's great if you have a lot of things you no longer wear. Also, I've given some clothes, books, and toys to younger cousins. Great way to help out a family member, and get rid of your unwanted stuff!

Slightly offensive to Midwestern women (who don't sit around all day eating and pinning bon bons because they have jobs too). "I’m totally into Pinterest right now, mainly because I’m on a diet and I like to torture myself by looking at all the delicious junk-food photos that Midwestern women pin all day long".

Stereotypes for race and sexual preference are bad, but not for geographical locations?

If it is useful to someone else and I have no value to it then I will sell it (unless I know the person then I usually just give it to them). Otherwise the items just get tossed. No use keeping it around if I am not going to use it.

  • Just Start: How Doing Anything Can Help You Accomplish Everything   13 years 39 weeks ago

Sheer terror is a good motivator... :-( But, like you, I just try to START, even if I don't know how I want to start. If I begin writing, the real lede will reveal itself a few paragraphs down. Then I just move it up to the top and keep going.
Sometimes it's a slog, but once I get going I generally think, "Why was I so worried? I have lots of good material!"

  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Get Rid of Your Unwanted Stuff?   13 years 39 weeks ago

A few months ago I got rid of a bunch of stuff by donating it to a rummage sale called "Superfluity." I love that name.
Right now I'm getting rid of a lot of stuff via Goodwill. I don't have a car any longer, but fortunately Goodwill has a donation station about a mile from here, on the way to errands I must run (library, post office, bank). So I'll put a bag of stuff at a time in my little-old-lady shopping cart and roll it down there.
I've put a couple of things on Freecycle, too.
And some stuff (old newspapers, school papers, business cards from a job I left 10 years ago) did end up in the recycle bin.
Scary how much one person can accumulate in, oh, 36 years of adulthood.

My friends and I have quarterly "naked lady parties." We all bring clothes, accessories and even housewares that we're tired of & we swap for new stuff. It's a fun reason to throw 4 parties a year and a reminder to clean your closet.

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   13 years 39 weeks ago

I have to agree with the last post...I LOVE LOVE LOVE Netspend. I have had several credit, debit, and a few pre-paid debit cards. Because I made some bad judgement mistakes with my checking account as a younger person, the only bank account I could obtain is a savings account, with a atm card without a Visa/MasterCard logo. This made it difficult to do many of the things I want. NOW, I get direct deposit weekly on my Netspend, and am literally AMAZED at how unbelievably awesome netspend has been for my needs. I pay $5 per month for unlimited FREE card transactions, and they even allow me to over-draft $85 per week if I need it for a $15 charge. If I use that more than 3 times in 1 month, they do not charge for over-draft. They have paid me $20 and another person whom I referred IMMEDIATELY in both of our accounts...they even accidentally paid me $40 for referring my wife, and did not take the extra $20 they over-paid! THEY ARE AWESOME...BEST PRE-PAID ACCOUNT, with features on their website, as a Premier Customer which I never would imagine...like $1 to send a money order online for a bill??? Those go out in the mail the next day, and they pay for postage...my wife and I transfer money back and forth for free when we want to...my Dad loads my card for a loan for $2.50, and NOTHING is more immediate! They notify us immediately of any transactions via email and cell...THEY ROCK!!!! NOT ONLY WOULD I RECOMMEND THEM TO ANYONE, I WISH I COULD PERSONALLY REFER ALL OF YOU SO THAT WE COULD EACH GET A FREE $20!!! They have monthly offers, which reward me with cash % for using the card where I normally would...like Burger King, etc...ANYONE THINKING OF GETTING ONE...GET IT! We are awaiting a notification of over $1000 direct deposit tomorrow morning from my work...and we CAN'T WAIT for the e-mail to arrive!

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   13 years 39 weeks ago

My husband and I both use the netspend cards...... They are wonderful, and make direct deposit, shopping, paying bills, and ordering things online so much easier, as well as faster!
You people that for some reason think that receiving an inactive card with your name on it, (bought by a corporation from another, which they almost ALL do), is the same as having you bank account stolen, are insane....... You people with your high and mighty
"platinum credit cards", should get off of your high horse, and quit complaining to the extent it makes it hard for the rest of us to get something as simple as a debit card.....
Get over your selves, life will go on, throw the card away, or not, who cares, no one, seriously, no one
