  • How much money should a CEO make?   17 years 49 weeks ago

Ok, I think that people who put down the time, energy and talent to found companies that make new jobs for people and contribute positively to the economy should be allowed to make whatever is reasonable so long as their lowest paid employees are still treated fairly. However, if someone is a hired CEO who didn't found the company they should be paid according to their contributions to the company, as any employee is paid. Thus, if they are doing a horrid job, they should be asked to leave ASAP and not given any $$ to compensate for that.

  • Do You Love Money or Hate It? Either Way, You're Sick.   17 years 49 weeks ago

I don't love money... I like the numbers game of making it and making it multiply. That's what I enjoy and what I find interesting. But it's just a numbers game, not really about the money itself.

I also enjoy giving money- that's the best part about having enough $$, being able to give some away.

  • Five Ways VHS Tapes Still Rock   17 years 49 weeks ago

We still love and use our VHS tapes frequently. If you're only watching a little bit of a movie, they're much better because you can stop them, take them out and come back to them later without having to find your place.

The one thing I do like DVDs better for are for TV shows- The chapters make much more sense for these.

For me, travel isn't about the room we stay in, that's just a place to crash for a few hours, so this is a great deal! THanks for sharing!

That farm sounds like a cool place! What an awesome experience. I do think that learning to live sustainably is a personal progression at your own pace, but I'm glad that it's become so popular.

  • How much money should a CEO make?   17 years 49 weeks ago

The problem is that there is no real way for the average share holder to regulate what a board does which includes setting the pay of a CEO and/or their golden parachute provisions. Instead the real voting power is contained within large institutions and hedge funds which are more than happy to go along with the game so long as the company continues to beat earnings estimates.

  • Will Guns Change the Way eBay Auctions Operate?   17 years 49 weeks ago

Sniping hides the bid from eBay, it doesn't count. Putting in your maximum bid via eBay counts and pushes the price up. Auction snipers definitely affect the outcome. Also, in a live auction you have the chance to keep bidding to your max. Some people don't get that chance with sniping because the snipe comes in at the last second, stopping further bids from happening. I think the 15 minute rule would stop all of that.

  • Cheap Hotel Room Promo: Get a Room at Super 8 for $8.88! (offer expired)   17 years 49 weeks ago

I have heard nothing but hooker and drug stories coming out of Super 8's. Definitely get a review of the particular place first.

  • Will Guns Change the Way eBay Auctions Operate?   17 years 49 weeks ago

I think the idea of a 15 min 'cush' time would bring back much of the traditional auction quality to ebay from the buyer standpoint. Although, I think that it would raise quite an uproar among regular users.

  • Will Guns Change the Way eBay Auctions Operate?   17 years 49 weeks ago

People that complain about sniping don't understand auctions and the way ebay works. What does it matter if you're outbid two days before or two seconds before the auction ends? Put your highest bid in and forget about it. If you win, great. If you don't, move on to the next auction. But please stop complaining about sniping. And no, I do not normally snipe, just because it's a hassle to set it up. It's easier just to put in my max bid about, the same I would do if I was sniping. It wouldn't change my limit.

  • Why Is "Rich" Often Equated With "Evil"?   17 years 49 weeks ago

    GREAT POST!!

Just a singular case here: Well I've been among the self-made upper percentile of wealth, and working strenuously to improve the lot of the impoverished "Third World" for my long career. In this field, there have been other volunteers from very wealthy backgrounds. I would wager to say that most of genuine rich-philanthropy I've seen across Asia, Africa and Latin America have worked hard all their lives, had investment portfolios or trust funds, and now are taking tremendous personal risks and humility to go into unstable conditions, learn four or five local languages, and work insane hours for low pay in order to really be humanitarian.

On the contrary, the corruption and greed comes from mostly from locals. Even on a short-term, their martyr attitude is, "We're the poor victims, we've never had opportunities, the rich owe us something, we never had a good family, we live in conflict, take-take-take" They fight over petty sums, steal, and don't want anybody else in their community to succeed, and they don't want to know that other people have also had tremendous difficulties, so they backstab and gossip about those who demonstrate a will to do better.

Yes, generalizing, but this often is 90% of the frustration of really working with the "underprivileged." I can tell you that as the rich one, the presence of humanitarianism and what it represents has bothered the have-nots. The locals who derive some power trip of doing things poorly and making the "rich" volunteers pick up the slack to work 12 to 14+ hour days, and the underlying tension is that they assume the rich are automatically bad, even if they themselves wouldn't ever dream of working hard to help someone else from another culture. "It's that we don't know how..." but they really haven't wanted to learn either. Sometimes it's a combo of jealousy + resentment + lacking ambition + not having inherent talent or intelligence. I'm also speaking from the perspective that in good will I have helped bring in most of the increase in their funding revenue to be sustainable, and I am often their scape goat. There is no good deed that goes unpunished.

PS: Our idea of how destitute the world is, is grossly exaggerated by the philanthropy industry and media interests and the ignorance of North Americans and Europeans.

At least they ship to a dealer. I'm not really anti-gun, but it would seem like a felon could easily get their hands on a gun if it was all online.

  • Will Guns Change the Way eBay Auctions Operate?   17 years 49 weeks ago

can easily get their hands on guns without the web. They don't need a traceable internet transaction to buy firearms.

  • So, You Think You're a Carnivore?   17 years 49 weeks ago

Oh, don't be sorry! I wasn't offended - I was just clarifying in case anyone else thought I was saying that. So, thank you for being so thoughtful in your responses to this post (all of you).

I would agree that deep-fried cow nuts don't taste as good as top sirloin, but who can afford top sirloin every night? OK, so maybe testes shouldn't be on a daily menu, but liver can be eaten once a week or so. Lots of frugal people will eat less desirably cuts of meat, but even the stuff that seems really weird to us can be great. So, it's not that you need to look at the meat counter and say "well, this chicken liver is cheap!" every single night, but that you might consider working a bit of it into your food instead of steak every now and then (seriously, spaghetti sauce with liver is amazing).

While it's true that true carnivores don't eat every bit of meat from a kill, it's also true that true carnivores don't have much in the way of a conscience. If we're talking about lions, we're discussing animals that will take over a pride and kill every single cub so that they can re-impregnate the females. Not really high when it comes to morals, right? By that token, I can't expect a lion to consider the implications of what it means to not eat everything on his plate. We're entirely different beasts. I do know that lions don't only eat the tri-tips, though.

With that said, an animal brought down on the African savannah IS going to be returned to the Earth in what is probably the most efficient fashion possible. Hyenas and other scavengers will eat the remainders, and like you said, bacteria will do the rest. We eat and live differently than wild animals, though. What we don't finish most often goes into a landfill. If you're a composter, that's great, but most people and businesses aren't.

To the issue of using up every part of a vegetable - I don't cook very often, but I do love me some carrots, and I use the tops for soup bases. Also, I love candied orange peel and marmalade, even though I don't like oranges that much. Anything that I can't use (either through freezing or cooking), I do compost. So I like to think I'm applying the same logic to vegetarians.

    I smell another blog post!

Thanks for the discussion - you guys are awesome.

  • Renting is cheaper   17 years 49 weeks ago

I had contentedly lived in my home for 26 years. I got up the next morning and the neighborhood had gone to hell. Literally. I suppose it took about 5-6 years to get that way, but all of us just hoped it would reverse again. It has not and, frankly, it just keeps getting worse. Nine years ago, my house appraised for $145,900. Today, I'd be lucky to get $67,000. The tide can turn in an instant.

  • Is living on one income a status symbol?   17 years 49 weeks ago

  • So, You Think You're a Carnivore?   17 years 49 weeks ago

This Scottish delicacy was my entree into the world of nose to tail eating. I can't help but like it; it's good! I won't say I've actually eaten all the bits, nose to tail, but I'm working on it as a moral imperative. Basically, I agree that most Americans are too prissy in their eating habits, and I include myself among them. But I don't think you're going to convince anyone to call themselves a musculutarian. Can't hurt to try to encourage broader eating habits though.

  • So, You Think You're a Carnivore?   17 years 49 weeks ago

    Myself, I'm an omnivore.

I see your point. I'm all for using all parts of any animal we kill. But that doesn't mean we have to eat them; there are plenty of uses for those parts we choose not to personally consume, whether because of health concerns, practicality or preference. I use bone meal and blood meal in my garden as organic, petroleum-free fertilizers. (I've never eaten bone to my knowledge, but blood sausage tastes like a scab. Yech.) We use leather for clothing and other purposes. On sustainable family farms, I believe offal is fed to the animals (different animals than it came from) or composted to make fertilizer.

But even most true carnivores don't actually eat everything. When the lion's done with its choice cuts, the buzzards come along and make their own selections, and maggots and bacteria usually have the final clean-up.

  • Will Guns Change the Way eBay Auctions Operate?   17 years 49 weeks ago

I can understand why EBay doesn't allow people to sell guns on their site, but their list of restricted items is a little extreme. You can't ANY reloading components, including cases. Guess those little hollow brass cylinders are some type of horrible threat. Thanks for the link to gunbroker, I'll have to check them out.

    Cheers,
    Ken
