Indeed. Peppers are "moderate" in terms of difficulty. Why not try peas instead? Way easier to keep alive and are good fresh or cooked. Not to mention growing times, as some of us in colder climates have short seasons to work with.

I also second rhubarb as a hard-to-kill plant for many regions. Also horseradish.

Thanks for the list. i didnt know arugula grew so easily. I am hopeless at tending my vegetable garden, but the year I planted kale, it would not stop growing. I harvested leaves and left the rest and the plants produced all summer until well past frost. Yum!

  • The Paradox of Choice and the Mortgage Crisis   13 years 1 week ago

Carla makes a very good point here with her comments. An ARM gets such a terrible reputation in the market but it's only because people don't know the function of an ARM. There is almost always a cap on the highest possible rate someone could pay and many times it is lower than the rate they are currently in with their mortgage now. With rates where they are today ARM's are not such a good choice but that is only because you can get a fixed rate for almost nothing. If rates go back up into the mid 4's to mid 5's a 7 year ARM would be a great choice for a first time home buyer that is looking to move into a larger home in 4-5 years. People just need to keep their mind open and learn as much as they can about the various mortgage products and determine which one fits their needs.

  • Buying Your First Home: What to Do and When to Do It   13 years 1 week ago

A home is not an investment!

  • 15 Alternatives to Nagging   13 years 1 week ago

I'd like to add a plug for timely versus delayed reminders: a pleasant, gentle reminder at the time when a chore-habit should be occurring rather than after the fact.

    Example:

"I see you're done eating and I bet you're ready to go play. Would you please bring your dishes to the kitchen when you leave the table?"

gets the motions of the intended habit going at the time when you want it to be happening.

"Stop playing, and come back here and clear your dishes from the table."

tries to insert the habit into the wrong activity (playing) rather than the one you want it linked to (eating).

If you are forgetting a chore at the same time your spouse/child is forgetting a chore, clearly it is an easy chore to forget, and you need to empathize with the difficulty of remembering it at the right time!

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   13 years 1 week ago

    Look people:
    1. Netspend is a Prepaid DEBIT card, not a CREDIT card. No one can use it until money is loaded onto it. It's safe for people under 18, good for people with bad credit, etc.
    2. I've had this company for 5 years. I've had ever paycheck and tax return put on it. I've never had a hold, never had any problems at all with my money.
    3. NETSPEND CAN'T STEAL YOUR IDENTITY. They're able to send you cards without you signing up because all they use is your name and address. No other important information. You people give this info out and give the okay for others to sell it, so it goes to Netspend. Then you get pissed and freak out when you get a card in the mail. Come on, now.

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   13 years 1 week ago

Why does it matter that they sent you that card? You GAVE your name and address to a company who works with Netspend and somewhere along the way gave them the okay to sell said information. Since Netspend is a pre-paid card, all they need is a name and address to open an account and send a card. There was no harm done. They gave you the option of opening an account without having to wait for the card. Since you didn't want the account, you didn't activate the card and no account ever existed. Why is that so horrible and outrageous? People like you just want something to get pissed and rage about. It's NOT that big of a deal. Petty.

"As a Scandinavian dish, this is known as torsk" (tip no. 16) - well, not really: "torsk" is the name of the fish, not the name of a dish. i.e. cod=torsk.

  • How to Step Out of Your Comfort Zone and Try Something New   13 years 1 week ago

When i try new recipes, i make them just for myself. Once i feel good about the results, I'll make it for others. If I'm just a little nervous about trying something or taking a class in something new, it's nice to have a friend who is new to it too. If it's something i find scary, like jumping out of a boat into 70+ feet of water, i find it helpful to have someone experienced, like someone who knows rescue swimming along.

there's also a balance between not taking on two much before you are ready for it and letting fear or anything else hold you back. Both extremes are bad.

I grow fresh mint and basil on my kitchen windowsill and I love them! They are very easy to maintain and do very well indoors, but I do agree they dry out very easily mine sit in the sun all day and they are fine if I water them twice a day.

  • 7 Ways to Make Money With Friends   13 years 1 week ago

These are really funny ideas! The only one I would be skeptical about would be starting a business, sometimes you work really well with friends and other times it falls through and can change the dynamic of a friendship.

  • 20 Recipe Substitutions That Save Money and Prevent Food Waste   13 years 1 week ago

Canola Oil for Butter is a good one, I have also replaced oils and butters with a tablespoon of coconut oil in the past and it works like a charm (will change whatever you are cooking to have a sweet coconut flavor, but I'm not complaining!). I disagree with juice or water with sugar for wine though, I feel like the flavor it adds is always great and unique. The way I would do that is just add a cheap wine instead of a nice one, Whole Foods always has an organic wine on sale for $2.99 that is delicious and works like a charm.
