  • Capital One 360: A Competitive Banking Option   13 years 1 week ago

So far, I do not have any complaints about Capital One 360. I signed up a couple years ago, back when it was still under ING. I have had to call their customer service a few times, but every time I have they went over the top to make sure things went well. You actually get to speak to someone here in the U.S. - not someone halfway across the world. In any company these days, that's hard to come by. Their interest rates used to be better, but they're still great. Overdrafts (if you need them) are just a percentage, so you won't get nailed with a huge fee if you pay it back right away. If you want to open an account, or take a look at the different accounts they have, here's a link to their site:

How about doing a project together, like buying a house and fixing it up, either as a rental or a flip?

  • Easy, Frugal Ways to Have People Over (Even If You Don't Cook and Clean)   13 years 1 week ago

A dessert party is great -- and an ice cream social is perfect. As I mentioned in the back yard party, an easy way is to provide the ice cream and then ask folks to bring their favorite toppings; this can be a great way to have folks over, including kids, in a cheap and casual way. Thanks for reading!

Haha! Rent a friend sounds amazing! In college, I had a car for a bit and charged people to take them to go grocery shopping at the cheaper place a few miles away. Not exactly on par with rent a friend but equally as awesome!

I happen to love ricotta cheese but hated spending so much money on it every time I went to the store. I noticed that cottage cheese was much cheaper a few months ago and have made the swap! Best decision ever!

I like the idea of making money with friends; however, many of these suggestions seem to be ripe for disaster if you ask me. For example, becoming business partners with anyone especially friends usually ends up a bad idea. One person works harder than the other and begins to feel disgruntled about it, etc.

A better approach in my opinion, is to pay for consulting services. That way, if it doesn't work out you retain ownership of the company and the friendship has a chance of surviving.

Pooling money for investing follows the same dangerous road. I'd avoid that if possible. Maybe you could have investing brainstorming sessions with friends to discuss what each person is researching/buying and to keep each other motivated. But, keep your money separate!!!!

    That's just my take...

Don't forget basil! It grows like gangbusters, and it's absurdly expensive in the store and doesn't keep well, so it's a perfect garden plant. It freezes really well at the end of the season for use throughout the winter. Or you can just go crazy with pesto. I have no self-control when it comes to basil, so for us, it's usually pesto!

The Rent-a-friend idea is funny, though. I've never heard of that!

I usually buy the huge screw-top jugs of wine for cooking. They're about the same price as juice, and they don't go bad, so that means I don't have to keep buying them whenever my recipe calls for wine.

I am just looking forward for our summer vacation. Looking forward to it, but it would be nice also if we can save while we're on travel. Thanks for the links.

  • How Much Should You Spend on a New Car?   13 years 1 week ago

The other thing - you need to drive car you like. Believe you me you will not get the same adrenalin driving bmw when you are in your 20-ties then in your 40-ties.

If it is something you like - spend money on it. Will force you to make harder and feel better. Life out there is for joy, as well as saving money :-)

  • Best Money Tips: Save Money on Your Vacation This Summer   13 years 1 week ago

One of the best money tips gave me a co-worker. While being on a six figure salary he has not been on vacation away last 10 years.

Not sure whether it is an ultimate solution. To be perfectly honest I visited almost 30 countries and could hardly remember the place I have been 6 months ago (we spent almost three weeks on Bali). I spoke with a few friend of ours - they are all alike. Is it really worth going anywhere?

  • How Much Should You Spend on a New Car?   13 years 1 week ago

Not everyone has that option. Not everyone lives in a city with good public transportation, and some careers require dependable transportation. If that transportation affords someone a great job/career, it could be the BEST investment one could make. I think each person should evaluate the expense from a comprehensive perspective.

  • Ask the Readers: What Is Your Dream Retirement?   13 years 1 week ago

Retirement for me would be to be living mortgage (and debt) free on a small farm with my family. It would have a small house, but large enough that I could have a room of my own (crafts, reading)

  • Ask the Readers: What Is Your Dream Retirement?   13 years 1 week ago

The traditional idea of retirement is to quit your job to have more free time to do things other than go to work.
Many start planning to retire with their first job counting down the days hours and minutes till they'll be "free".
Sounds like a miserable way to spend 20,30, or 40 years of a life.
Why not find a job you "love" and do it till you die?
Stop working for "the man" and work for you in the sense that you live a life that affords freedom to travel, volunteer, play golf, garden, etc for your entire life rather than the last few years. Most that I've known that have all these plans when they retire only find they've saved too little or waited too long to enjoy life. They find they spend all their days sleeping , eating , watching television and dieing. Ever notice how many vibrant people retire and fairly soon die? No purpose, no activity, no peers, no contribution, loneliness all combined with too much free time delivers you even more soon to the grave.
It is a blessing to have a job, to be needed, to contribute, and to have health that allows for work.

So many plan to travel in retirement yet they don't travel now because it is too costly. When one retires they no longer receive a paycheck therefore how can many travel on a "fixed" income if they can't do it with a pay check? As many age they find they don't drive at night or prefer to stay home....so much for adventure.

My dream is to be able to find employment and keep employment with good health until my last days.

  • Seven Lessons Learned from Working Retail   13 years 1 week ago

Sounds like my store! The worst part is that it's a new store and HUGE! We get nothing done when we close at 9:30 and have to leave by 10.

  • Seven Lessons Learned from Working Retail   13 years 1 week ago

YES!!! I hate that! It's so disgusting!

A pet peeve of mine is when someone hands me a large bill, but their total is small... I don't always have that much money in my draw... First I'll ask if they have something smaller, but if they don't I have to wait for a manager to open up the cash draw and break the money... this made me more aware of when I buy something at a store...I was never far off when paying someone, but now I'll be exact to near exact, or I'll just use my bank card.

Ideally... Healthy! Six months warm, six months somewhere LCOL & temperate; most likely staying in US. World travel once a year & time to see friends, read & help people. Would like to adjunct a course or two, but really only hope for a simple, funded-enough retirement with my sweet husband! That is mostly what I want 'a chance to grow old with' him. :)

  • 10 Things to Look for Every Time You Visit a Thrift Store   13 years 2 weeks ago

Thrift store shopping always was a battle with my teenage daughter. If she would have only understood that we weren't rich, just frugral and a little smarter. I always purchased my clothing for work from thrift stores. I didn't worry about protecting the investment and stayed focused on getting the work completed. Which directly kept me employed. Hence, frugal and smart, not at all rich.

We had a bbq for my cub scout troupe's families and there were about 45 at our home. I saved money by going to Sam's and buying a box of burgers, a box of hot dogs a ton of buns, chips and sodas. I asked all the families to bring a dessert and that was that! Worked out great. Everyone was more interested in playing the games outside that I had set up in the back yard.
