  • How to Refinance Your Mortgage   13 years 15 weeks ago

    Hi Carla,

To be honest, I cannot remember since we refinanced but some people I spoke to believe that I have an FHA. I would need to look at the settlement paperwork. We currently live in MD. Both of our credit scores are 730 and we never been in bankruptcy. I think between us we have had 1 late payment but was several years ago when our new card company never sent us the first bill. Sadly they blamed us for it.

I love to go to a new town and go to its thrift stores. In my own area, I go to Goodwill Super stores. I just bought shoes this week for the first time after a friend had found me sandals this summer at a thrift that I love... the shoes are comfy, just like the pants- already worn and comfy! I am ruined for the mall! I get shirts, jackets , earrings, books, kids clothes, socks, gloves, pictures and frames. Knowig i can do this happily gives me peace of mind for the future when I may be really poor with this economy.

  • The False Allure of Compound Interest   13 years 15 weeks ago

Very good article and great arguments. So what can you do? What if you look at records of 100 years of so of the insurance industry in particular Whole life insurance.
Many insurance companies have weather all kind of changes in economy and provided stable growth. We are life time consumers, when you add to the stability of a Life Insurance Company, a paradigm change where you use the capital you are growing to finance your needs, you can improve things.
Even in low interest periods financial institutions are going to collect above average interest from you when you take loans from them, so why not switch and pay that above average interest to your own policy when financing.
Doing that simple change gives you control to improve the return on your capital.

  • Student Loans: The Third Way to Ruin Your Finances   13 years 15 weeks ago

My cousin has 4 daughters who all have gone to expensive private colleges and gotten their master's degree. She is worried about the one still in law school as she says good jobs are few and far between. I just have to wonder how people so smart don't always seem to see the financial picture of what the job market is going to be when they graduate. Starting off in life with a huge student loan debt can be crushing.

I agree with you - change schools, change majors, change options. You can always go back to school later after you've tested out work in the real world.

  • 25 Ways to Lower Your Grocery Bill   13 years 15 weeks ago

Good tips! Being strategic about where you buy certain items and visiting a few different stores (within reason) can be very helpful. Also, if you buy a lot of canned goods, pastas, frozen veggies or spices, those kinds of things can be found at the dollar store for super cheap and the same you'd find at a supermarket. I do most of my grocery shopping at Walmart and despite stigma, they actually have pretty good stuff and their store-bradn Good Value is really inexpensive.

    Hi Alan,

This is a very strange situation. It's not very common that a person would be prevented from refinancing for any legal reason, outside of some very specific programs. What state are you in, and who holds your current mortgage? Was it done through a federal program like FHA, HARP, VA, etc? Are you in or just out of bankrupt, or have any legal restrictions on your finances? (P.S. I'm not a licensed loan officer, just experienced. I cannot legally offer you anything except resources and ideas.)

All of these are great! Just getting out and interacting with other people, nature and your surroundings will instantly boost creativity. I like that you include visiting a museum, or an art gallery as well because those often make you feel like theres a ton of creativity inside of you thats bursting to come out.

  • 8 Things to Consider Before Switching to an Online-Only Bank   13 years 15 weeks ago

The advantage of online banking is higher interest rates. You still need to have a local bank linked to your account to access funds and in some cases deposit checks. Most online banks allow electronic check deposits by scanning the check, but I found out that they have limits to the dollar amount. Ally is pretty reasonable allowing up to $10K. Capital One 360 (ING) on the other hand only allows $3000. I can understand increasing the check holding period, etc., but to have a policy that limits a check amount is ridiculous and is another reason that online banks are NOT full service.

I do- we have seven kids and I can often find clothes, especially for the youngest. Last week I bought an almost-new fleece jacket for my 4 year old, who had lost his jacket recently, for $3. Washed it and he wears it every day! I also never buy new costumes, but hunt for items for my kids to use when Halloween comes around. It's really fun. In addition, I love snagging water jugs for a dollar or two, for the kids to use for soccer practice. Those jugs are spendy and I have a handful of them that I've bought for $1. Fun contest- thanks!

  • Unclaimed Assets: Is the Government Holding Your Money?   13 years 15 weeks ago

I've always done a regular check for myself and pretty much my entire family. We're all good. The funny part is that I checked for some of my friends, and my best friend has some money from a job he had way back. I've told him about it several times but he still hasn't claimed it. Must be nice! :)

  • Save Money on Shaving With These Razor Tricks   13 years 15 weeks ago

Even if these tactics work as described, they are all pointless and stupid.

The point at which a razor is no longer useful is when repeated usage has dulled the blade. If you are using a single razor long enough where rust/oxidation has dulled it, or you are so bad at hygenics that bacterial accumulation has ruined your blade, you are clearly an idiot in regards to proper usage of hair razors.

Only honing will restore a dull blade to sharpness. No liquid immersion can accomplish this. And if you are worried about infection from your blade, then your blade must be extremely dull in the first place, as infection isn't an issue unless you are cutting the heck out of your skin.

Replace your blades when dull, and if you're unsatisfied, send an email to your blade company that their blades dull to quick.

None of the examples given here do anything useful, and even if they might, they are more expensive in the long term than just buying a new blade.

I shop at thrift stores for several reasons:

    Good quality clothing for cheap.
    Unique pieces of clothing.
Up cycle sweaters for cheap yarn.
Sell good quality brand names on eBay.

  • Is Building an Emergency Fund Always a Good Idea?   13 years 15 weeks ago

Bingo CGK! Good example. We sometimes underestimate the usefulness of an emergency fund. Liquidity and safety are the two most important objectives when considering investments for an emergency fund.

  • Is Building an Emergency Fund Always a Good Idea?   13 years 15 weeks ago

Ferrel- Yes, it does seem inefficient to have that much money in a low yielding investment; but these days that amount can disappear in a hurry under the wrong circumstances. The reason the HELOC is not a good idea is two fold; 1. A HELOC is secured debt. You would be taking out debt for living expenses against the value of your home. If your circumstances didn't get any better soon or worse, continued to deteriorate, you could be putting your home in danger. 2. During the downturn of 2008-2009; the credit markets froze up. Many people had unused lines of credit shut off. They could not access a HELOC even if they wanted to. Remember, just because you have equity doesn't mean the bank has to lend additional money to you. Before 2008, I encountered many advisers that wrongly gave out the same advice and put their clients bad positions. I would never recommend that strategy to one of my clients.

  • How to Make Moonshine   13 years 15 weeks ago

highest alcohol content is in first run, according to the still and begining alcohol content of mash (130-190 proof). Idea temperature for still is 173 degrees, temprature will slowly raise during process, at 193 degrees you will start to get the tail. The tail has a bad taste and lower alcohol content. Keep the tail for second run, second run alcohol will be lower between 110-120 proof. The third run will give you a consistent 95 proof alcohol. Note the reason XXX was placed on the mason jars (three runs)
With each run always toss the first shot glass full of product, this part of the run does not contain poisons but contain what causes hangovers. Good shine will not cause hangovers.
The myths of poisons, going blind etc... as stated earlier; was caused by lead in stills and the use of cutting agents in the shine by shiners that were greedy and wanted a cheaper product. Propaganda by the federal government also fueled these myths. A good clean, lead free still... stainless still or copper makes a safe shine... the use of thumpers will make a cleaner shine and is pretty cool to watch during the cooking phase. I use glass mason jars; flavoring also can be added to thumpers.
Unlike wine; NO matter what is used in the mash process; you always come away with an alcohol consistent taste, not apple, strawberry etc... Flavoring is usually done at the end; charred wood, apples etc... Soak in finished shine and then filtered out.
Family has made shine and wine for years, it is passed down from each generation treated as part of our southern heritage. Old time shiners can't tell you temperatures or chemical concept of distilling; they used touch for temperature, how clear alcohol, beading (bubbles) in alcohol, color of flame when alcohol is lit and taste.
Several states are now in the process of treating shine the same as wine; for personal consumption. Stills are sold all over the internet as water distillers and to produce ethanol fuel legally...
Best advice is to understand the concept of distilling and then with trail & error; you will get a good product. Happy shining

  • How to Refinance Your Mortgage   13 years 15 weeks ago

    Hi,
I have refinanced my current mortgage a few times which lowered the payment from $3,500 to $2,800. We used a 5 year ARM. We still have about 3 years left but are in a situation where we owe more than the house is worth, like $60-80k more. We do not see the value increasing that much in the near future and have been attempting to get a fixed rate at .25% less than our ARM. Unfortunately every company I called said there are new laws out there that state that if we do not save 5% on our payment or are not at the end of the ARM, then we could not refinance at this time. Apparently these are some new laws that have changed in the past 6 months or so. I have not called them back but would love to see if anyone else ran into the same problem recently.

I shop at thrift stores for a variety of household items. Right now I am trying to get Easter decorations since mine were destroyed in a flood.
