I definitely need to get rid of unwanted clothes (i never remember, thank you so much) organize my wallet and un clutter my desk! So looking forward to my weekend now. lol
I also believe in men and women being equal, yet we consistently see that woman and men are more efficient in different areas. I feel like this is more in part due to mindsets and outlooks than anything inherent, but who really knows.
I completely cut back on processed foods about two months ago and feel amazing. I've lost over 20 pounds, have an average BMI, and can think clearer than ever.
I have to be honest. I don't really DIY. Except for cooking. I have started preparing meals at home much more often. But I'm not all that handy and prefer to have experts fix my car.
On using Pepperplate, if you have a mobile iOS device — the “add to Pepperplate” bookmarklet works just fine. First add a bookmark, then go back and edit it and drop-in the javascript. Then whenever you see a recipe that you want to save to Pepperplate, just click on the bookmark in your Safari browser.
Cinnamon is not only a way to lower blood sugar, but it's nice too. I've personally added cinnamon in most of the home desserts I make. I also put a dash of it in my tea. It might sound strange at first but it's really nice. To make the effect better, I drink gourd tea.
That's a great example, FRUGALCAT. Now that you mention it... Alton Brown's show was chockablock with this sort of thing (handheld drills for blenders and so on.)
Last summer I hacked together a "pizza oven" with materials from a local pottery supply store. My oven is a kiln shelf floor (designed to withstand several thousand degrees), a couple of fire bricks (also capable of tolerating 1000s of degrees) and another kiln shelf for the lid.
I stack it all up on the gas grill outside, crank the burners, drop the lid, and heat that little kiln/oven to 700 degrees or more. That's not as hot as a true pizza oven (the wood fired one's can go to 900 degrees and beyond), but my solution cost ~80 bux versus 1500 or more for the real deal. And I can take mine apart and store it back in the garage when I'm done.
Wow! What an extensive list! And so helpful! This isn't the first time I've read a list like this, but it is the first time I've found the list so useful. I have to say that many lists like this offer some good ideas and some ideas that leave me wondering, "who came up with this junk?!" But your list did not. I took away some great ideas from it and hope to use them soon. Thanks!
This mentality really extends beyond finances. There are many fantastic experiences out there that people don't try because they think "oh that's not appropriate for my gender." And they're missing out. I'm glad WiseBread is tackling these preconceptions.
I've saved quite a bit cutting my son's hair, making my own curtains, drying clothes on a line, making my own laundry detergent are a few. Our family does almost everything ourselves. We've repaired washers, dryers, heaters, a/c, refrigerators, cars. My son learned how to sharpen knives. We clean our own house (unlike many I know), do our own landscaping and pool maintenance. Last year we spread four tons of rock and replaced a pool filter.
When we can't do it ourselves, we look to those who can repair reasonably. Our sofa cushion has been repaired instead of replacing the sofa, our backpacks get repaired by shoe repair shops, our shoes get re -heeled when necessary etc.
I feel that a majority of my girlfriends do not save any money when they are not in relationships. And even when they do, they only stash 3-5% in their 401K.
The problem is that most in my generation have been sold on Carrie's lifestyle from Sex and The City, and think that they will end up with their own Mr. Big
My sister is having a baby shower so I just got done making about 6 or 7 handmade purses to raffle off in exchange when someone brings a pack of diapers! Much cheaper than buying prizes but omg it took a while :)
I enjoy your reply. Great responses to a difficult request. Unfortunately not enough of the general public comprehend the concept of supply and demand. I was recently asked, "it looks like this is your last one of these. What kind of discount are you gonna give me on it?" I desperately wanted to reply "based on it popularity and sell through rate perhaps i should increase the price". Maybe someday I will decide to go along with the haggle and increase my price. If the price is up for debate why can't I adjust it to my benefit since thats what the haggler is doing. Everyone complains about a dramatic markup. I once asked a customer where they think such a large profit margin goes. They replied "your pocket". Yes my pocket and from my pocket to overhead(rent of space, electricity, water, etc), labor wages, purchase of new product to keep the business going, advertising, the list goes on. Don't haggle it is rude.
I can't say there are many surprises here. I pretty much assume that anything that makes big claims without a shred of evidence is going to be a scam. The worst of the bunch is probably those bracelets. We have some different ones here in Canada that have been flooding the TV lately with commercials of happy, smiling, miraculously cured people. I hate to think of how may have been suckered in.
What did surprise me though was the Subway one. The Cold Cut Trio is all turkey? You just blew my mind! I haven't had Subway in probably five years but in high school I ate one of those almost every day and never knew. I guess I just smothered it in enough horrible sauces to not even notice?
I manage a clothing retailer. Your suggestion to ask for discounts, and the manner you suggest to go about is passive aggressive and I would find such an approach rude and be less willing to offer any price reduction. At a high end botique this may work for those who have the money to be spending on such items why would you haggle anyways? However, at smaller businesses or low end mall based chains you will just come off as selfish and rude. Please support a local business do not haggle with the owner. Please do not ask a sales associate to put their job on the line to save you 10% on a $20 item ($2) at any mall based chain. Even if the manager gives you a discount he has risked being flagged for internal theft as it applies to "sweetheart discount" policies. Trust me those transactions are audited. It is not as win win as you imply. Generally a vendor can recieve a refund by sending back a defective item to the manufacturer with minimal costs in shipping. Moreover, most stores now have te capability to order you the exact same item in perfect condition and have it shipped to you. Nora, you may have good intentions at helping shoppers, but I'd wager 8/10 people will abuse this advice and either damage an item to get a discount or cause a scene to get a discount. If the item is too expensive for your budget DON'T BUY IT. The way economics works will eventually cause the item to reach a price that balances supply and demand. If its not in sale it is generally because many others have purchases it at that price thus deriving its worth in dollars. Lack of econimcs eduaction and self entitlement cause people to haggle. Don't be that person. Just don't buy it if its not worth it to you, or take a lovely vaction to a beach in Mexico and get your jollies by haggling the local street vendors.
Hard to beat homecooked meals and the savings you get, but when I want to take my family to eat out I get great meal discount deals from www.strictlydining.com
Getting the degree is one thing. Finding a job with it is another. Were people taught on how to market there degree to get a job? If not then you end up waiting tables and have a degree that is useless and a monthly payment that is not excusible.
What bothers me is that the people think nothing of borrowing a ton of money(stupid is) , that the lending intitutions are stupid enough to lend them this money (stupid as)and universities can charge what they charge for that degree (stupid does) and no one wants to accept responsibility for this.

GREAT advice!
What sort of information did they want to activate card? I thought you could just send copy of your driver's license.

Yeah, I got a kick out of the baking stone idea.

"you learn better and faster when you have to."
There cannot be any more of a truer statement than that. When you have a plan in place, your financing ability will be much better.

I got to say, these are pretty awesome project suggestions. Napping and going back to nature would be really nice. ;)

These (at least 80% of them) are things EVERYONE should know!

I do my own home painting and make my own jewelry!

I know what you mean Paul, especially with Excedrin. Most of these are just fancy names to sound interesting and new.
I put my desk (actually a small table) up on cinder blocks. It's not the sturdiest thing ever, but no more rickety than some of these other ideas :-)
