Instead of buying expensive things, I cook extensive meals for my family. I also make DIY gifts as they're memorable and save money. My family enjoys memories than material stuff.

I'm a frequent wetshaver who uses straight razors and double-edge razors. After shave balm is essential for keeping my skin soft all day. Without it, my skin just doesn't feel the same.

On a side note, more people need to give witch hazel a try. Great for cleaning your skin and closing the pores (since it's an astringent) both after a shave and before bed.

A bit of vinegar in the wash is a natural fabric softener. If your front-end washer gets a funky smell, leave the door open so it can dry inside. While unusual, I use a baby monitor to listen for when my sheep are lambing. They prefer to lamb at night, in the dead of winter, and I can get listen for any signs of trouble in the barn:)

Tooth paste. Use a dab of baking soda.

Partially prepared foods. It takes almost as much time to make a muffin from a mix as it does from scratch if your pantry stuff is set up for it.

Special containers to keep refrigerated goods. Clear glass jars with screw on lids work fine.

Expensive cleaners for ceramic top electric ranges. Use baking soda, some water, and rub.

I did like my changing pad though, as we didn't have a changing table. We got a few of those ancient rubberized felted mats from the thrift store. Just throw them in the bleached wash load.

Window cleaner. There are tons of formulas out there but we just use a combo of ammonia and water.

Paper towels. Use rags. A quicker picker upper and it's free.

Air freshener. If it's really bad, light a match or open a window.

I would add a half cup of vinegar to your baking soda clogged drain trick.

As someone who runs a lot, I would say that a moisture-wicking shirt makes a really big difference in comfort. But, if you're not running very often then I agree that cotton is sufficient.

My husband are struggling with this right now in our house hunt. We want a better location in the city and close to the trails/parks because that fits with our lifestyle; however, we can't seem to back off on the other 'needs' - like a certain number of bedrooms, open floor plan, etc. It's easy to get hooked on wanting all the newest and greatest. I just keep reminding us that our current house isn't our dream home and we wish it had a different layout, but it doesn't really impact our overall happiness level.

  • 10 DIY Dog Toys You Can Make for Pennies   13 years 19 weeks ago

Cheap tennis balls are covered with 100% polyester but good match balls are covered in genuine wool felt and shouldn't harm your dog's teeth.

The best dog toys are obtained from the International Dog Ball Collective (IDBC) which is operated by the dogs on an entirely altruistic, non-profit basis. It works thus: you buy your dog a toy or ball and it insists on taking it out on its regular walk or visit to the park. Inevitably this toy or ball will be lost while you are not looking. However, the ball has now entered the IDBC and will inevitably be found by another dog soon enough and, indeed, your dog will soon enough find a another similarly 'lost' ball. The true genius of of dogs is, of course, that none of these toys or balls are lost, they are simply being shared. Any ball or toy can be taken by any dog on the basis that once it has been used for a while it will be 'lost' somewhere for another dog to find in due course, preferably somewhere exciting like in a hedge.

It has been suggested that the dogs manage the IDBC system so efficiently that there is precisely one more ball or toy than there are dogs at any one time, thereby ensuring that no dog goes without a toy or ball. Of course, only they know if this is true... All I know is that the rubber ball on a rope we found on our walk today will be gone from us sometime in the future and another dog will find it.

Great list! I never use aftershave for the exact reason you mention - I can just use cold water.

The diet meals you mention are also usually loaded with sodium. Next time you are in the grocery store, just take a look at how much sodium is in those things!

You can use conditioner as shaving cream to save money on that expense.

  • How to Sell Your Old Stuff on Facebook   13 years 19 weeks ago

I first started selling things on ebay, but then the fees became prohibitive and sellers have no rights. I've since moved most of my selling to Craigslist, but sometimes that isn't ideal since its a small market (local). I didn't know about being able to sell things on Facebook. I'll have to check it out. Maybe a combination of CL and Facebook would be the way to go for the most exposure.

  • The Best Secured Credit Cards   13 years 19 weeks ago

I would avoid the U.S. Bank card at all costs, unless you have money laying about you wouldn't mind them holding onto. I initially applied about 3 weeks ago. I was sent to a "sorry we cannot approve you at this time" screen. Never received an email, snail mail or even a phone call. After about a week I decided to just up my line of credit with my capitalone card. Which, I absolutely love by the way. Just a few days ago I went to check my bank account, and guess what? USBank took out $300 for a deposit leaving me with overdraft fees. After speaking with tons of representatives who all made me feel like crap, one in particular who told me I shouldn't have "blown my money" and should have left it for their disposal at any time. It was my personal account I use for household items, not my joint account, so keeping an extra $300 for a card I was told I wasn't approved for seemed a tad silly. After speaking with several USBank employees I have been told it isn't their "policy" to communicate with you unless they approve you. And now, for the REAL kicker of the whole thing. They haven't even approved my application. Even with my $300. They are currently still "reviewing" my application to determine whether they will give me a card. And, it gets better. I was told on February 1, 2013 that I will have an answer in about 3 days. On February 6, I was told the same thing. Once they "decide" they will either a. send my money back to my bank if they deny me, which will take 10-14 days or b. assign me a card number and issue a card within 7-14 days, then once I have a card number, THEN I will be mailed, finally, a card to use with my money. So, in 14-28 days I will finally have access to, if I am lucky.

  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Save Money on Your Hobbies?   13 years 19 weeks ago

I try to always use a coupon on my craft items which I make as a hobby. Many times it involves multiple trips to the store, but I will only buy one item at a time if the coupon is for a discount off one item. That increases my profit by the amount saved - used 40 - 50% off.

Hey, Kelly! Thanks for your comment. I do follow Seafood Watch, which is connected to http://www.montereybayaquarium.org and find them to be reliable. I completely agree with you -- need to be careful about what you buy, and find out where it is from.

I noticed that all of these recipes are heavy on the oil or butter. I prefer white fish (sole or halibut by preference) baked en papillote with tomatoes, onions, garlic, lemon juice and fresh oregano or basil or dill. Thicken the juices from cooking with a little corn starch and you have a very low-fat, healthy alternative preparation.

  • Revenge of the battery hack - 32 AAs inside a 6v Lantern Battery. BUT IS IT PHONEY?!   13 years 20 weeks ago

Unless I missed the comment, I am wondering why nobody on this thread isn't wondering why there are 4 cylinders and not just one huge one? Applying the same rationale why there are four cylinders, it is quite conceivable that 32 batteries could have been placed inside the 6v cover.

To embellish on the manufacturing process described here, I am going to guess that by having one huge cylinder would require too much time in the manufacturing process to "charge" one huge glob instead of smaller globs. And that the release of energy my be more efficient producing less heat and thereby having the charge last longer with several cylinders and in the case where there were 32 batteries, each cell could have been 0.187 v x 32 = 6v. Was the size of each of the 32 aa's compared to the actual size of a 32 aa? Perhaps they were a bit smaller? And would contribute all that none sense to the good old surface area phenomenon.

  • Revenge of the battery hack - 32 AAs inside a 6v Lantern Battery. BUT IS IT PHONEY?!   13 years 20 weeks ago

Obviously, the 6v battery that contains 4 x 1.5 D cells is a commonly known configuration called "babushka batteries" or "matryoshka batteries" also known as Russian nesting/nested batteries, which refer to a set of dry cells of decreasing size placed one inside the other. Now, cut open each 1.5v and see what's inside!

  • Ask the Readers: How Do You Save on Valentine's Day?   13 years 20 weeks ago

My husband and I have long only bought cards and a candy bar for Valentine's day to save money. We definitely don't need to buy each other any more things to clutter up our house.

  • Delicious Ways to Prepare Affordable White Fish   13 years 20 weeks ago

Whenever I buy fish I'm usually planning on cooking it within a day, so I make sure that it smells and looks fresh. I've cooked fish before in a number of ways and my favorite are grilling it or making a crust on it like you suggested in the first recipe. You really do have to be careful with tilapia and other farm-raised fish as the U.S. can't really be trusted in their regulations on farming in any area.

I buy flowers at Safeway, which actually has good fresh flowers.
