  • Ask the Readers: What Is Your Best Job Interview Tip?   13 years 46 weeks ago

Be honest to yourself and to the prospective company about your strengths and weaknesses. A job is a two-way street; the company wants to make sure they are hiring a productive and valuable employee and you want to make sure that you are stepping into a role that you are capable of handling. If you find yourself having to stretch your accomplishments or abilities to fit the criteria that they are looking for, you'll likely be stepping into a stressful situation should you get the job, and if you can't fulfill the requirements you'll end up looking for another job and back at square one.

  • 9 Easy, Frugal, and Tasty Recipes for Bachelors   13 years 46 weeks ago

I love the idea of cooking with one pot, especially in a kitchen as small as mine. Of all the recipes in this fresh collection, the ones that I want to try first are the rustic potatoes with beans and eggs and the orzo with meatballs.

On my blog I also wrote about Delicious One Dish Meals for a Song:

Bring up a conversation about something in the interviewer's office (picture of a hobby etc). Relating to the interviewer on a personal level will better help you be remembered down the road.

Just be yourself! The goal of an interview is to be as much yourself as possible, so that the people who are interviewing you will know if you're a good fit. No one is good, better, or best - they're just the right fit or not!

Keep in mind that while they are interviewing you, you are interviewing them. How they treat you during the interview is a good guide to how they will treat you as an employee.

Look the interviewer squarely in the eye and articulate your crisp, concise action plan for your first 100 days, people you want to meet, things you want to assess, things you want to investigate for change and skills, tools and experience you can leverage to make their job easier.

Best Job Interview Tip: Dress appropriately. Do NOT wear crocs, revealing clothes, see-through blouses, sandals, or ratty pants or jeans. Show the potential employer that you are a responsible individual that cares about your appearance.

A Thank You note is always a nice touch and perfectly appropriate to send after an interview, even if it didn't go well in your opinion.

dude makes too much sense....sometimes SOME companies aren't so security conscious...they trust their employees...an oversize purse or lunch pail CAN be useful
...it's nice to see SOME ppl care what others think of them...like do you respect an extreme couponer...they use valuable time, theirs & others...it's just nice to see someone respects the "rights" or feelings of other ppl

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   13 years 46 weeks ago

Hi well I don't get why they would send a card to someone that didn't apply for 1, but I've had a netspend card for a year and for me its great mainly because I can't get a credit card as they all say I have insufficient credit history. Lol:-D how do they expect me to have credit history if I can't get credit? I never understood that! Anyway for me and ppl like me prepaid cards are great for online purchases and things of that nature but yes .50¢ everytime u call is a bit ridiculous that's y they offer online service free but sometimes u do need a person to talk to and that's crazy

In general, I'm with you on these...BUT (and there's always a but, isn't there, or I wouldn't be commenting?)

I would never dream of insisting that someone heat or cool their home to my specifications when I'm the guest. And, yes, I have kids. They have the ability to layer up in the cold and fan themselves in the heat. Again, to me, number 10 just struck me as the height of arrogance, in that you are demanding how others spend their own money in order to satisfy your own standards.

  • How to Make Moonshine   13 years 46 weeks ago

Hi guys been a while since i started reading this site, so i'm not up to date if anyone has mentioned making rum.
I have been experimenting and found that black treacle makes really good quality brandy, its about 80% sugar so when working out sugar to water ration take this into account, i have found half of the total amount of sugar would be treacle and half would be cheap white sugar.
once its been distilled i add oak chips for 5 days to help with the colour and a bit of flavour then depending on taste i added a bit of caramel syrup that is used for coffee.
I must say it is a really enjoyable drink if you like rum

  • Why You Should Have Renters Insurance   13 years 46 weeks ago

It seems per the above comments that some people only think renters insurance is a good thing to have if you have lots of personal property. While this is partially true, rental insurance also provides liability coverages for damages if someone is hurt on your property. If you have a dog as an example and he/she bites someone guess who's paying for that if you don't have any coverage!

  • 10 Things I Just Won’t Do to Save Money   13 years 46 weeks ago

Eric, I largly agree with most of what you said, but if you are ever on a fixed income, decisions must be made that can be tough. It's very easy today to run out of money with 20 days left till payday. You slowly sink into a hole that can wipe you out at any time. I try to make decisions that will have the best or least impact on my well being in the short term. Unless you are blessed with a large bank account or a solid retirement, it gets dicey. Lots of folks are in that position. We can argue the reasons why, or they shoulda done this or that. But the fact is: events can change that we didn't see coming that can affect us to the end. I respectfully wish you the best in your effort to never deny yourself creature comforts. But do not look disdainfully at those who must, lest you painfully walk in their shoes. But after all thats no big deal, right? Just not in their used socks and underwear---that would be disgusting.

  • 10 Things I Just Won’t Do to Save Money   13 years 46 weeks ago

The water/soda thing is flat out stealing and sad. As far as tipping goes I won't under-tip either but if the service was bad or nonexistent expect to get a similar sized tip. I have been a waiter before and I know it is hard work but I did it so they can too.

  • 10 Things I Just Won’t Do to Save Money   13 years 46 weeks ago

The only thing I will hoard packets of is soy sauce. I use it so rarely (sodium issues) but sometimes run into a recipe that calls for a tiny amount so I don't want to buy a whole bottle.

  • 25 Things to Throw Out Today   13 years 46 weeks ago

If I had chipped mugs plates, etc., or ones I didn't use anymore, it would be kind of fun to *throw* them (maybe against a brick wall so it would make a lot of noise and get out some frustration.) Shoot, if they were made from pretty ceramic, the broken pieces could be used in jewelry making or for making a mosaic. If I thought a piece was worthy for this purpose, I would break it more carefully - just sayin'.

Also it would be kind of fun to see spices or food *go off*.

I'm from Akron, Ohio USA, and I would say "throw out" or "throw away" in the case of the bad mugs. And in the instance of spices and food *going off*, that means to me they are going to explode! I would say it has "gone bad" or "expired."

LOL! Ain't English fun? I am curious though, about where the writer learned to speak. I am not making fun of the writer - I know expressions and words can differ a lot, depending on the region or country. I just find that fascinating and sometimes it makes me giggle.

Anyway, it's a good article and thank you for the little fantasy I had in my head of spices and food exploding. Since I recently moved, my stuff is in pretty good order. Now, to keep it that way? - well, that's another story. Because I sew in addition to numerous types of arts and crafts, it is difficult to throw away things (even broken) that I have ideas to re-purpose. There is only so much room in my apartment though, and I like to be able to see the floor and find stuff when needed, so I'm more conscientious of getting rid of things when I find something that is no longer any use to me.

While going through my supply of liquids like art paints, glues, and various finishes, I learned that some of that stuff has a fairly short "shelf life" and others can last for years if sealed properly after using. I think I have finally learned my lesson about Super Glue or glues like Super Glue - Even though it is less expensive per milliliter in the cool-looking squeeze bottle, it is better for me to buy it in tiny tubes that can only be used once or maybe just a few times. That stuff dries up and/or glues it's dispenser and cap together within a short amount of time, making it impossible to use.

"A place for everything and everything in its place" is a motto I strive to achieve, but if any of you are creative and more "right brained" (like I am) that is not often easy.
