Love the idea of covering the spiral notebook, but saw a much simpler option elsewhere. simply cut the cereal box front and back to just cover the spiral's existing cover and glue it on, no messing with the wire :)
So many of these are great ideas! I just have to say though, the best gifts are the ones where you know the person. I, for example, would never put coffee maker on a list like this, just because I don't think it's universal. Neither my husband nor I drink coffee, so it would basically just be a space taking up appliance in our kitchen that would never get used. Knowing your recipient is most important!
If I'm taking a class somewhere I always ask if they have a discount for new comers. I buy classes in bulk. I'm on a cheap/free event listserv so I keep my eye out for my hobbies.
And what if IN FACT the person HAS NOT had an issue or disagreement with anyone? I mean frankly, NOT everyone is interested in raising hell or getting their feet wet in a childish back and forth debate (read argument) IN THE MIDDLE OF WORK. I'M PERSONALLY ONE OF THEM. I HATE AND AVOID CONFLICT.....THUS, I start no trouble so there wouldn't BE any trouble. Some people just like to pick a bone with others for the most petty reason(s) and believe me, those reasons may not necessarily be anything in relation to work...just superficial things. In other words, SOME employees let their personal insecurities get the best of them when they come in contact with other employees that seems to be doing better or who are always bettering/enhancing themselves OUTSIDE OF WORK....NOTHING WORK RELATED. Why humor that? The ONLY conflict I generally have with co-workers have all been scheduling conflicts and well.....IT IS THE TRUTH. My professionalism, maturity, work ethic and on and on should NOT be compromised because of someone else's professional and/or personal issues. I have and DO tune these types of individuals out because they are distracting to me and I LOSE MY FOCUS and purpose for being at the job. I don't need it. Perhaps the media world is another ball game BUT perhaps giving people the benefit of the doubt (for reasons I've noted with my own observations, experiences and mindset) won't be such a bad idea.
Of my numerous hobbies, my most expensive has somehow managed to be gardening. The way I save is I joined MyPoints a few years ago, and then use my points (earned mostly for free) on Home Depot or Lowe's gift cards. I have saved close to $300 over the last 4 years thanks to mypoints, and my purchases have included soil, seeds, a grow light, special bulbs, and a station for all of it! :-D
My hobby is reading books, so I save up $25 to then buy books online at Amazon, which permits me to get some excellent discounted books shipped to me without a shipping or handling fee. We don't have a good local bookstore within 25 miles of where I live. Buying books from Amazon also saves time and gas.
Also, a friend gave me his old Kindle and so far I've downloaded over 200 free ebooks that are available on Amazon. Many of these are classics and by prominent authors. All free, which is quite a saving.
The best conditioner I have ever used is Pro Naturals Moroccan Argan Oil Conditioner, the argan oil hydrates and strengthens my hair making it nice and healthy. Plus the extra shine is appreciated! Thanks for the informative article :)
I follow politics as a hobby and the only cost is internet connection. It saves me a lot of money it is a full time job and don't have time to shop and spend money.
Wow! I cannot believe there are a lot of ways that we can do with our old and used towels. Most of our old towels end up as cleaning rags, dishtowels, ironing board cover, and towel for our pet dog. Spa slipers, bibs, and baby bath robes sound interesting and fun to do but like you, my sewing skills is only limited to the basic.
I agree 100% with the main takeaway points of the article. The only reason why you WOULDN'T forgive someone is because you practiced not to forgive. Our egos and personal importance usually distort our perceptions and it seems easier to take things personally rather than look beyond our own bubble.
I recommend "Mastery of Love" by Don Miguel Ruiz as an excellent followup for those people ready to stop all that emotional non-sense and actually heal the emotional body.
For reading-I use the library, and get library books on kindle
For knitting-I plan projects ahead, and then buy lots of yarn when it goes on sale
For running-I use websites that let me download free, pre-made playlists to run to
As an avid crafter with very little time to devote, I've developed a new system. I use Pinterest to pin ideas for crafts I can do with supplies I already have or with goods that are easily available at thrift stores. I love being able to pick up an unloved sweater and turn it into a cute hat or headband.
Also, every craft & art store publishes weekly coupons & I never shop without them. Also, Joann's and Michael's honor each other's published coupons, but not the self-printed kind. And Joann's offers 20% off including clearance, while Michael's never includes clearance in their coupons.
I mostly have cheap hobbies. My most expensive hobby is gardening, for which I wait for sails and discounts and buy seeds when possible (or get freebies from family). Then there's watching movies, and for that I use the cheapest Netflix subscription ($4.95/mo for 2 discs and 2 hours of streaming). Other than that, my hobbies are all free or nearly so (and reading about personal finance is one of them).
I'd love to hear from readers -- what frugal advice do you wished you followed when you were young? Or if you're young now, how is your experience striking a frugal balance?
I'm still relatively young myself, but I definitely regret putting off retirement savings.
I love comic books, and switching to digital through comixology.com has saved me lots of money. The price of individual issues drops by a dollar when they've been out a month, and the site constantly runs great sales with issues for just a dollar each.
Have you tried using a Diva Cup, Moon Cup, or Keeper? I've been using a Diva Cup for years, and I love it! They're safe and provide the same reusable benefits.
This would come in handy if I could bring myself to stop using old towels. I used an Amazon.com gift card to get two new pairs to replace two old ones, but find myself still using the old ones and trying to keep the new ones nice!

This really depends on the hobby:

Is the Ooma system portable? Can you travel with it, or does it only work "at home"? That's a pretty big advantage of the new magicjack.
Funny you should mention that -- we just got permission to use the photos. Enjoy!

14. Reusable Sanitary Pads
Seriously? Gross. I actually don't like the website now because of that suggestion.
