  • How to Do Less — and Why You Should   14 years 1 week ago

My wife and I take a full day off from work every week. It's the hardest day of the week (to not work), but the best. It's made a huge impact on our relationship and how we view "work" in general.

    Hey Ted,

My dad mention to me about tinfoil on your grills and turn the BBQ on and leave it on high for tweenty minutes. That should do the trick and it works believe me!!

I like to get mine bleached. I suck at routine morning things like the strips and such. Any evidence on it hurting enamel?

I use a GasBuddy, a free I phone app. I also fill my tank up when it is half way full.

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   14 years 1 week ago

I just received a NetSpend Visa card in the mail, along with a "myfreerxcard". I am disturbed as I nor my husband would ever apply for a card such as this. It is going through the shredder right now. I tried to call the number, but the automated "Sally" kept saying you had to activate the account first before yiu could speak to a customer service rep. What does that tell you right there. I am just flat out disturbed that the world is so full of scams such as this. I will report this to the AttorneybGeneral of Washington State, and I will also be writinv netSpend and letting them know.

  • How to Make Moonshine   14 years 1 week ago

OK. 2 days into fermentation this time it looks and smells alot better. This time I doubled my sugar to 10 lbs. And I also washed the corn. Zorcy said to pour hot water with corn to kill any bacteria, which I did then as I was mixing the water started to turn brown and smell like my last batch which did not turn out right. So I poured my corn slowly through a strainer and washed it, then put it all back into the fermenter with an extra dose of boiling water. Then added sugar to disolve. Also did the thing with the yeast , sugar and hot water. With that said my mash smells like beer, which it did not before, and has a look of something lighter than skim milk. Is this the way it is supposed to go? I have high hopes. Oh yeah almost forgot, don't really have any floaties, actually almost none.

My problem is that when I finally have a chance to relax, I feel like I should be doing something.

I have to drive for work, so I use software to plan my routes so they are most efficient. Other methods:
    1. I keep track of which stations have the lower prices on average, and if I see one that is significantly lower I will fill up.
    2. I avoid drive-through lanes whenever possible.
    3. I keep my car maintained per the manufacturer's schedule and get my tire pressure checked (free) monthly.

I am not sure if I would have thought to carry a first aid kit in a water bottle but I am glad there are people who are more clever than me! It seems like a great way to keep stuff dry and easy to reach, esp. for someone who is not particularly neat (like me).

Hope the watering technique works well for you, and helps to save money.

  • How to Clean Your House in One Day   14 years 1 week ago

I'm guilty of getting distracted when trying to focus on one room at a time. Next time I'm cleaning, I'll definitely try your tip of putting everything that goes to a different room, into one pile to deal with later.

Wake up early -- YES. I don't know how people can start cleaning late in the day. I'm also a big proponent of having people over to force myself to clean.

As a former New Englander, I tend to hold pure maple syrup as the one and only true pancake topping. But I'm interested in this homemade syrup -- what do you make it out of? Can you link to a recipe?

  • How to Travel Full-Time for $17,000 a Year (or Less!)   14 years 1 week ago

Very good tips, even it is not my type of travel.

Challenge yourself by setting a timer before you start each room. It'll help you stay more focused on the task at hand...knowing there's a time limit. Also, save yourself from doing double work. Remember the laws of gravity! Start at the ceiling and work your way down. Any crud that falls to the floor can be cleaned up at the end.

  • 7 Ways to Make the Most of a Tiny Kitchen   14 years 1 week ago

    Sarah,

You don't say whether this is a rental or your place you can paint so I don't know if my advice will help but here are some thoughts:
    1) paint the kitchen some light and cheery color. My favorite for kitchens is somewhere between a warm yellow and a cheery orange. It really makes it feel warm and cozy.

If you can't paint (or even if you can and you want to jazz something up) look into the stick-on-the-wall decals from a place like IKEA. There are a ton also online you can get. Posters.com has tons. They are removable and graphic. I got black flowers to put on my daughter's door.

    2) Look up at your ceiling. What kind is it? Is that where the light is? You might want to put a pot rack all around it in a small square (this works best if you are super short like me ;-) I put in a pot rack like the one the cycle guy in the above comments did but I used copper piping and copper wire to bend my own hooks. It was fun and saved me a TON of space.

    3) I would go to a travel store (or look online) about a rollup kit that can hold all your office type things. These are holders that can be filled up with stuff and then rolled up or opened up and hung on a hook (or over a doorknob).

I would also look into one of those plastic shoe over the door things for maybe all your jewelry making stuff? There are online stores that specialize in that kind of org stuff. Or go to your local storage and things and look around.

    Good luck
    maureen

Use it to slice blocks of cheese! Unless, of course, it's mind flavored. Who wants minty cheese?

  • SpringCoin to Pay Off $500 Debt for One Lucky Wise Bread Reader   14 years 1 week ago

I'm in the phase of my life where I'm digging my way out of debt, so any planning help and visual progress indicator works great to keep my motivation up. I signed up for SpringCoin, and completed my account. After running into a couple of snags with some accounts I emailed Kevin and he and his team were quick with fixes and suggestions. This is a great service! I'm looking forward to watching it grow as my debt shrinks.

I try to walk as much as possible. I do have to drive to work. Once home, almost everything I need is pretty local.
