  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   14 years 28 weeks ago

The "guest" with the pink emblem must be an employee as I have seen post after post calling people "whiny babies" over and over again and with poor english at that. This is a serious money to some people. Your name calling is insulting and unwarranted. If someone is concerned (even more so than you are) about their credit worthiness due to CRIMINAL INTENT from a person OR COMPANY..then they have very right to sound off and not be called names. After all there are a few I could choose for you, "whiny baby" person, but I'd like to think I'm above that reproach. Your words speak volumes or in your case, lack of substance for name calling is always used when there is no longer a case for a legitimate debate. FAIL!

I'm not sure that's true. I just touched up a room I first painted in 2004 with paint from that can. No problem with fading or needing to paint whole wall. I do love your post and have re-blogged it - with credit - noting what I need to do and not do.
I also disagree re un-read books- that's my To Be Read Pile.

The number one thing I regret buying for our house is a mattress. We went cheap, when we shouldn't have.

My smartphone has helped me MAKE money! I got the Ebay app, and now I am able to snap photos of my unwanted posessions, and post them to Ebay so easily. No more having to use my digital camera to take pics, locate that silly wire that connects to my laptop, wait forever for the pics to upload, and then go through a million steps before listing on ebay.

I don't think so. Think of all of the people in this world who truly have nothing. If you're so motivated, be as frugal as you want. Your savings can always go to help those in need worldwide.

  • Quality Over Price: 15 Items to Spend More On   14 years 28 weeks ago

Another item that's good to have quality over price is pet food. The cheaper dog/cat food, like Purina and Pedigree and such have more fillers (grains like corn or wheat or rice) and less actual meat/protein, and what meat is there are usually the by-products (in other words, the parts of the animal not fit for human consumption like the organs and such). Really disgusting when you think about what you're feeding your dog/cat. But the higher quality (and higher price) brands have less fillers, protein is the first ingredient (and not from by-products).

And in reality, it's not that much more expensive than the cheaper food, because with the cheaper food and more fillers, your animal is going to use the bathroom more so you have to buy more food, whereas with the higher-quality food they can actually use more of the nutrients and thus go less.

I'm a huge supporter of this philosophy. The issue that I think many have is having the up-front money to pay more. Many simply don't have that for whatever reason. So when the appliance goes and it's time for a new one, $1k for the 'OK' one is hard enough to come up with, let alone $3k for the awesome one that's going to last forever. While many would want the $3k version and understand the long term benefits, the fact is that their financial limitations often force them into the $1k version.

  • 5 Wardrobe Basics for Women That Are Worth Investing In   14 years 28 weeks ago

Flutterby, fashion is not in and of itself materialistic and shallow. Having a personal sense of style and choosing to dress in a way that expresses your personality, your taste, or your culture, is a part of being human and I think it's wonderful.

Feeling you have to wear brand name clothing or what everyone else is wearing, to feel good about yourself, is perhaps more problematic, but wanting to look good and dressing nicely is a perfectly good way to behave. And it's only really in the U.S. that people feel like walking around in baggy sweatpants and running shoes all the time.

  • 25 Things to Throw Out Today   14 years 28 weeks ago

    Regarding 14:

Dumping old audio tapes? Only if they are prerecorded and can be rebought easily
    as a download.

If you recorded them buy yourself and they are several decades old, play them once and you will be surprised what's on them. Even better, free apps like SoundHound make it extremely easy to identfy what you recorded several decades ago so you can get a great sounding version of that song.

And if you happen to stumble on recordings of FM radio that includes DJ talk and commercials and runs for the full length of a tape, it's a keeper. If the station still exist, offer them the copy because most didn't bother to archive anything. If it doesn't, there will be people on the internet who desperately want this: Google the name of the station and the word aircheck and you will find them..

I agree with GreenGeekGirl about the books. I would never throw a book away unless it were truly bad. You can donate it or sell/trade it in to 2nd hand book store--we can all use a little extra money these days! Having an electronic tablet, Kindle, Nook, etc can help keep the shelves from filling up again...although in another year I'll probably have my Nook cluttered with eBooks!

I think much of the problem comes from not that you don't want to get rid of something but how to get rid of them safely. The company I work for has an opportunity for you to bring in old electronics for recycling. I got rid of 4 old computers, including one that was an ancient 386 model, a monitor, a printer and a old DVD player. Some companies, churches or groups will have recycle days for things like paint and other chemicals. If your company does this, be sure and take advantage of it.

Of course now days they tell you to not flush pills down the toilet. I was surprised to find you can get rid of medications by crushing the pills in a bag and/or mixing them with cat litter or coffee grounds and then throwing them out in the trash. Really...it's on the FDA website.

Guest is definitely headed in the right direction. Way to go. The Taubes is a must-read.

Very good point about consuming sweetened beverages. Juices are sugar water - even so-called 100% fruit juices (many times the amount of sugar in a serving of fruit, and generally includes refined fruit juices are are essentially pure sugar - but it's legal to claim it's all fruit).

However the whole grain vs white flour & glycemic is a bit of a side-step & trap. So-called low glycemic whole grains (flour isn't "whole", even if the bran and germ aren't removed) can still significantly mess with blood sugar levels & triglycerides (esp if there is any degree of insulin resistance or glucose intolerance), and contribute NO nutrients that can't be found in some other more healthful foods. There are no essential grains; humans evolved without them and many populations existed just fine without grain consumption until fairly recently.

And that's not even getting into the gluten problem which is more widespread than realized, especially with the hybrid dwarf variant wheat strains that have overrun the food supply in the post-WWII era without testing for safety on humans or animals. These strains were developed to fit the high-crop yield demands for industrial agriculture and factory food processing, not the health of consumers. We aren't eating the same wheat our grandparents and great-grandparents ate, let alone the same wheat consumed in the Bible. The bran of seeds has its own toxic properties that can wreak gut havoc (phytotoxins meant to protect the plant's seeds from predators); fiber from vegetables and fruit is far preferable, especially soluble fiber, which keeps our gut biome happy.

I'd add it's also a good idea to reduce/avoid industrial seed/vegetable oils (oil from seeds that require industrial technology, solvents, & refinement to extract the oil and make it palatable - corn, soy, cottonseed, safflower, etc.). No, this doesn't generally include olive oil, which is botanically speaking a fruit, not a seed. Olive oil can be be produced without industrial technology, as can many nut oils.

  • How to Make Moonshine   14 years 28 weeks ago

I signed in as guest last night, but wanted to have a site name so I decided to go with rebel. I commented last night about the keg and if it was aluminum. Thank you for the comments back. I called a local scrap yard and could not get a straight answer. They said kegs are still made of both aluminum and stainless steel.

To Phil, Magnet sticks to top and bottom of keg but not the middle.

To Zorcy, I took a knife to all three places top, bottom and middle all three places cut about the same. Made a little mark you can feel with your finger, but didn't cut like butter.

Would really mean a lot if I could use this keg as a mash pot.

  • The Cheap Girl’s Guide to Lowering Cholesterol Without Suffering   14 years 28 weeks ago

Read Gary Taubes' book "Good Calories, Bad Calories", especially the chapter on Triglycerides (or actually all of section 2. Skip section 1, just debunks old theories, gets into too much of a rant.)

Anyway, I have cut back my carbs to only vegetables and some fruit (I shoot for 10 servings a day, combined) and limit my grains altogether. When I do eat grains it's only high fiber, whole grains, never "white bread" stuff, or low glycemic carbs. Also STOP DRINKING ALL SWEET DRINKS! This includes fruit juices as well as soda. It's the sugar (or substitutes) and the high glycemic foods that raise your triglycerides. Following his advice (or the advice he has gathered from experts), I lowered my own triglycerides to 49. My LDL is 91 and my HDL is 79. My doctor's comment: Keep doing whatever you're doing. It works!

It is awesome that your son is so well informed. The fate of the internet really depends on the activism of young people--they understand it more and they are more likely to rally around social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter. I hope it translates into actual voting and grass roots organizing as well.

  • Ask the Readers: Is It Possible to Be Too Frugal?   14 years 28 weeks ago

YES!! My biggest pet peave is when you are out to dinner with a group, and certain friends put in money but dont include tax or a crummy tip. I guess those people are more cheap than frugal.

Also, sticking to a budget is important. But if it means that you are sacrificing all your fun because you dont want to "waste your money," I find it rediculous.

Saving is important, but so is enjoying life.

  • Ask the Readers: Is It Possible to Be Too Frugal?   14 years 28 weeks ago

Definitely. Limiting the number of sheets of toilet paper you use is yucky, NOT frugal ;)
