  • Ask the Readers: Do You Use Business Cards? (Special $100 Giveaway)   14 years 33 weeks ago

Yes! I do you business cards often. I make handmade beads and then use them to make one-of-a-kind jewelry, so my work is quite distinct. I have 2 different business cards, each with its own style and picture; one bright and one pastel. If someone asks me about what jewelry I'm wearing, I can give them a card, and sometimes when that happens, nearby people will start asking for them! Always good to have a nice card carrying case as well.

I own a childcare in a small town and whenever I am out and about I pass my card to parents and store personal. I always make a point in introducing myself and letting them know that I can help with childcare. I designed my card and it’s green with black type, soothing but very catchy.

Yes, I use business cards. I understand that people may question the logic behind holding onto something paper when you can just as easily plug it into whatever electronic device you have, but there is something to be said about business cards. I will start also by saying that I too have electronic devices, i.e. iPhone, which allows me to basally put anything into it. And I do put everything I think I might need into it. However, business cards to me are a safety net. When I go out and see someone's business card it catches my eye. Who are they? What do they sell or offer? I take them and stash them right next to all of my others, and keep it in my car. That way, if my phone, iPad, navigation, whatever, dies, I have a back up. At least I have somewhere to start rather than being SOL. Furthermore, extending a business card to someone is, in my opinion, more personal than saying "hey, put my info in you're phone". You often get the phone number plus address, web site, business hours, specials, etc. That amount of information takes time to input and so when I take one, I can always go back and deal with it later.

Finally, I remember places more often when I have taken their card. Sometimes I take it and leave, than place it in with my other cards. Now and again I go through them and say "hey, I wanted to try that out" or "I totally forgot about that". It serves as a reminder. Of course, I do not take one unless there is a chance I will need it. For instance, I do not take a card from every restaurant, doctors office, or retailer I've been to. I simply prefer to have an actual copy of some information. Maybe I'm old school but I doubt it. I believe there is a point to taking business cards even if your not sure. You never know, you might go through them and remember how great an experience was and you were just too busy to type it into your phone. I know it happens to me and so I will continue to take them when I feel I could benefit from it.

I use business cards to let people know how to find me and to let them know what I do. It is a great way for people to remember you. I also encourage them to write notes on the cards.

I just received my business cards from my job this week, so not yet. The only people who have gotten them are my fiance and mother!

I use business cards to hand out to people I meet at conferences. They are also good to have on hand to enter drawings for free lunches!

We don't use business cards currently, but need to get some for our RV lifestyle. It's a great way for people to remember you and to have your email and phone numbers handy for future contact.

  • How to Stick to an Exercise Plan   14 years 33 weeks ago

What has worked best for me is having a workout/accountability partner. Find someone who has similar goals, or is maybe a step or two further down the road than you. You don't even have to workout each time together. For one really important season of time, I met a group of friends every Friday after work for a run. They were all in better shape than I was. They could talk while they ran; I couldn't! Knowing I was going to run with them on Friday evenings motivated me to run on my own a couple of times during the week before Friday.

I've found something that helps me personally is to track my workouts much like I'd track my finances. You don't see calories burnt from running show up in your bank account though. You have to start tracking it yourself. Then it can be very satisfying to see the miles pile up over time. Sort of like an exercise bank!

That is a really great collection of ways to keep exercise on track. The two things I always struggle with are i) finding enough time in the work-week to do a proper exercise session (only real time is before 7am which is tough); and ii) once I am out of the routine, it is just so hard to get back into it - any top tips to convince myself to start back slow and easy?

I think that getting your mind to focus on something other than the workout is huge. I listen to music sometimes when I run, but a lot of the time I use that time just to think -- about articles I'm working on, problems I'm trying to solve, friends who are going through challenging times. The workouts definitely seem to go much faster that way.

This winter, since I don't like the music my health club tends to play, I plan to listen to various podcasts while running on the treadmill.

  • How to Split Food Expenses With a Significant Other   14 years 33 weeks ago

I really like the method suggested for couples who have never lived together at all. Some couple though, let's be honest, are basically living together for awhile and need to figure this out quicker than their official move-in date later down the line. We resolved this by setting up our bank accounts to link to each other. Neither can take from the other (just in case!) but we can both transfer to each other. Then we just set our budget together, based on what we're both comfortable with, and once a week or every other week we even up on who paid for what and whoever owes money transfers it. Now that we live together we do this for all of our expenses and it works great!

  • Line Drying Your Laundry: Frugal or Foolish?   14 years 33 weeks ago

I live in a apartment. I line my clothes then pop them in the dryer for 10 mins. It is just me and my husband and the clothes are fresh and the dryer is just to fluff. It is on air dry , which means no heat.

I tend to go for the BOGO sales at my local grocery store on meat. It's "reduced for quick sale", and I can get big roasts for half of what they would normally cost.

I don't clip coupons myself (I am lazy), but I did notice someone in Walgreen's the other day who bought something like six cans of shaving cream for a total of a $1.41. I felt guilty buying my dollar pack of gum after that.

Wow, that's a decent chunk of savings. Congrats on finding a good solution!

I have a similar distraction method with music. I can't watch video while I'm working out (makes me kind of dizzy), but as long as I have severly cheesy and happy music playing in my ears, I feel like I can keep going and going.

Like Matt, I'm using training for a half-marathon right now to keep me on an exercise plan. The training schedule I'm following has two strength training days, which I've found MUCH easier to do since I've started watching TV shows on Netflix at the same time. I hope the DVD player helps you!

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   14 years 33 weeks ago

simple. he DID give out his information to someone whether he remembers it or not. Netspend can't pull ur info out of a hat; thats the only way Netspend can get it.

ironically, after reading this article, jus a few days ago, i too just received the random Netspend card i didnt ask for, in the mail with my name on it, albeit it was spelled wrong, even tho i already had one. turns out last month when i went to a check cashing store a few weeks earlier, they had signed me up for a netspend card without me knowing. i know it was them because the lady had spelled my name wrong on the card i filled out to cash my check but since it was a one time check cashing thing, i didnt bother to tell her she spelled my name wrong.

so if u've gone to a check cashing store then thats one of the ways u may get a netspend card as well.

  • Choosing Life Insurance: Term or Permanent?   14 years 33 weeks ago

Thanks for your comments. One thing that is difficult about this I think is that the tax laws keep changing. Right now, though, you can put aside money in a Roth that will not be taxed upon withdrawal so that is a way of avoiding taxation but still having control of your money. Still another topic (that I hope to explore in greater depth soon with an insurance expert) is the difference between death benefits and investment portions of the policy or contract; my understanding is that the death benefit is not taxable but the investment portion (the money that grows in the policy) is.

  • How to Stick to an Exercise Plan   14 years 33 weeks ago

I just plugged in a DVD player to the TV that we have in the workout room. So far this keeps me a lot more entertained when I do my morning workout than when I had to watch the news (which is mostly commercials during the early morning hour) or flip through all the infomercials. I am hoping that this really keeps me going.

I found a tasty soup recipe that I'm now making on Sundays, enough for lunch every day at work. That & a piece of fruit is satisfying & healthy, & a no brainer for those early mornings heading out the door.
