Was this a sugar wash or corn? You could have oil that came through. You could try freezing it, then filtering while still cold. It will separate. I run mine through a used Brita filter about 4 times. How big of a batch did you make for only one jar?
You can always put it in the next run. You could also add about a gallon of distilled water and run it through again on its own. Then you could say you have your own double distilled vodka!

We went to the Florida sister park last weekend, and brought in, no joke, enough food to feed an army with absolutely no problems. Sandwiches, sodas, juices, snacks, etc. I would say it saved us at least $150-$200 between the 12 of us.

One of my favorite cooking oils is ghee. Ghee is clarified butter, meaning all the milk solids have been removed. Because it is pure fat, it can be used at much higher temperatures than butter.
You should be able to find it in the International Food section of most grocery stores, and it's not terribly expensive.
Just tonight for dinner I had a delicious steak that I pan-fried in ghee!

I don't know about your info on the endothelium, I would have to research further into that.

On oil being junk food and 100% fat - remember that eating fat is a necessity for healthy living. Omega 3 acids can be found in some of these oils - (olive especially) and they are essential.

Some oils mentioned (Canola in particular) are definitely NOT healthy. Others, like Coconut and butter, are tremendously healthy.

    @Andrea Karim:

Rice Bran oil has little or no taste. It is one of the most neutral oils I have tried, and I was skeptical about its claims of being so. I prefer it above all other oils for the fact it does not add any flavour to things I use oil for - including pan-frying, stir-frying and even in recipes that call for oil (like the gluten-free tortillas I used to make). And since I don't like oil in my vinaigrette, it doesn't matter that this oil is of a neutral taste.

It's only been a commonly-found oil on our shelves here in Western Australia for about 18 months, with it being a bit obscure for about a year before that (and non-existent before about 2008) - I suspect somewhere like Whole Foods might either have it or be able to get it in..

I think this year my financial goal is to see a higher ROI on the money I put into my photography and videography business this year. I am just getting started with higher end equipment so it was quite nerve-wracking. I also need to become more frugal with my online shopping habits...

My financial resolution is to be more mindful of my spending. Not just spend to fit in, but to make sure my discretionary money is going to things that will actually make me happy or improve my life.

    Another observation re number 7:

I've seen people with shopping carts full of jars of pasta sauce when they have been BOGO free. I admire them, whether for their ruthless shopping power (and stamina at getting through so much pasta sauce), or because they may not really eat pasta sauce but when they see a deal they really go for it (even if it is not actually the smart thing to do)!

The Boomerang email program sounds like it's made for some sort of novel plot. Someone sets emails to be sent in the future... person disappears... why are there random emails arriving from him when no one has spoken with him in days? (Not sure writing that story would make me more productive in 2012, but hey...)

your brother seems to be an exception to the rule. it has been my experience that people who spend more on an item, i.e. an iPad vs another tablet, are more likely to take care of that item. provided they're not a spoiled snobby brat who doesn't appreciate the cost of things.

as for your father, many older people are like that. my mother had cataract surgery but refused to invest in a decent pair of sunglasses to protect her eyes; which ironically can prevent cataracts in the first place. the quality of an item DOES make a difference and you DO get what you pay for. I'm not talking about a $300 pair of silly designer glasses that are for looks & not function, but a quality polarized lens, from a manufacturer who offers a warranty (i.e. Costa del Mar) is worth the money and protects your vision.

and then the Kia vs Mercedes... ever hear of safety ratings or resale value? ever been in a wreck in a cheap aluminum vehicle? well, I have. and there is no way I would be caught dead in one again. they almost got me once already.

Number 10 hits a little too close to home. My husband and I like to have a little extra ground beef in the freezer to turn into hamburgers or tacos or mix in with mac n cheese when we're short on time for dinner.

I usually buy three lbs. at the grocery store, use one that day or the next few days, and stick the other two in the freezer. It's worked pretty well.

The other day I was at Costco, and I saw 7 lb. of ground beef for $2.77 a lb. That's at least $1.00 less per lb. that it is at the supermarket, so I bought it. The "use-by or freeze" date was 2 days after I bought it, but I was planning to go home and break it up and put it in the freezer that night, so I figured it would be fine.

When the use-by date came, I remembered my ground beef. I pulled it out of the fridge to portion it and was dismayed to find that it had turned brown and smelly. I had to throw all 7 lbs. of ground beef away, which was basically like throwing a $20 in the trash. I'll stick to my grocery store ground beef at a dollar extra a lb., instead of risking throwing away that much food/money.

My first financial goal is to pay off all medical bills in 2012. After that is accomplished, I will make another one (probably putting extra money toward student loans or something).

  • Guide to Buying a Used Car Without Going Crazy   14 years 39 weeks ago

Having a professional come with you and check out the car is always something you want to do but there are certain things that you can do on your own. One of the ones that not a lot of people know to look for or how to look for it is rust. Of course if the rust is visible that is great but sometimes it isn't. One thing to do to look for the rust is to run a magnet over the car and if it doesn't stick as well to a certain spot then there is rust there or you can check for bubbles also. One other thing to make sure to do when buying a used car is to make sure to have a contract written up to protect yourself against possible discrepancies you may have with the seller later on. It will protect you if you ever need to go to court.

The message to text is great. I've been using the Google voice transcriber for a while now. It's not perfect (the results can sometimes be hilarious) but it normally gets the gist of the message correct. I also like the "theme your days" thing. I tend to have projects with no specific deadline, so it can be hard to figure out what to work on when. I think devoting days to specifics will help me increase the amount of work I accomplish on all my projects. Thanks!

One thing that I have found myself wasting money on is buffets. Buffets are a good value if you are going to eat a lot. So if I go to a buffet I feel compelled to eat more. If I would have gotten soup and a salad it would have been cheaper and my waistline would have thanked me! But instead I am suckered in by the value.

  • The Secret to Time Management and Work-Life Balance   14 years 39 weeks ago

Thank you so much for reiterating this point. It definitely is up to the person. As a single mom finishing up my masters, studying for the CPA exam, working full-time and chasing around my three-year-old, I often feel like there is no balance. I'm learning balance is what you make it and some things just aren't that important. Thanks for the reminder!
