I would like to hear someone in the OWS movement stand up and tell us who these corporations are. I hear all the talk about corporate greed and the 1% who are getting rich off the 99%. I am squarely in the middle of the 99% and I for one are cheering on the evil corporations to increase their profits. The reason I am cheering is that myself, my wife, my kids teachers, my mother (by way of my Dad's Teamster pension), and I bet many of the OWS protesters are the evil corporations. Anyone who owns stock, mutual funds, or has a defined pension program has at least part of their money invested in these evil corporations. Corporations attempt to make profits to drive up their stock price. When corporations fail to make profits, their stock price decreases, and many people react by selling their stock. I would like to ask 1 of the OWS protesters if he/she had $1000 worth of XYZ stock, and XYZ company was poorly managed and there was no way for the company to make a profit, and the stock was heading to $0, would he/she sell the stock or hold it until it went to $0. If he/she is true to his/her principles, he/she would hold the stock, loose the money and celebrate the fact he/she was not in it to make a profit.
Just my 2 cents, which I would like to turn into 4 cents, that would be a profit.
I typically splurge on gifts - in that I spend more per item than I would ever spend on myself. However, I consider that premeditated splurging, since I save in order to do so.

I have Gastritis and Esophagitis. I was taking Prilosec, but it stopped working and I began to take Aloe Vera Juice. Works like a charm. It's been the best thing for me.

The Cities on the Cheap blogs are all independently owned and written by people who live in (or are well-acquainted) with the cities they cover. I've also sent my friends and relatives to the site when they tell me about their plans for travel.
I'm a blogger with the network (my city is Wichita), and there are blogs for NYC, San Francisco Bay Area, New Orleans, Atlanta, Miami, and lots of other cities (both large and small)! We do them because we are passionate about what our cities have to offer and want to help others enjoy them affordably.
If I have money left over at the end of the month after meeting all of my obligations (including deposits into savings, retirement, etc.) then I will treat myself to a nice bottle of wine to share with a friend.
I disagree. Shoes are made to hit the ground all day long. No matter how great a quality of shoe you buy (I'm assuming most of us are investing in work wear shoes here), it will still get dirty, scuff, and eventually wear out. Even if you never wear shoes outside and only to cocktail parties. Also, for women's high heel shoes, the heels will inevitably get stuck in a crack somewhere and damage the material on the heel.
You can get very comfortable, long-lasting shoes at a very reasonable price. If your shoe is uncomfortable, perhaps you should try a new brand or a new size.
For the most part, I think it's not ok. The exception is on vacations when you're doing things you don't normally get to do. Although, you could make the arguement that a vacation is a splurge...
Splurge when the longevity and quality of the product reduces the total cost of ownership.
For example, I bought a really great leather purse that I loved when I got my first job and paid about $200 for it. I've now used it every day for over two years and will likely be able to use it long into the future. I used to buy a cheaper $30-40 purse every season as the one before it wore out.
I've saved myself at least $150 by now and I'll likely save hundreds more as I continue to use it! And I still love the look to this day :)
I think it depends on your budget. After everything else is paid, if there is some left over, then you can splurge! For instance, birthdays or to reward yourself for achieving a goal.
I usually don't indulge in splurging but there have been a couple of times we did it as a family and I look back at those times with great memories. Once was for our 25th wedding anniversary. We celebrated with our children at Cedar Point. We stayed in their historic hotel, ate all of our meals there, enjoyed the rides, and relaxed on the beach and in the hot tubs at the end of the day. It was wonderful! The other time again involved our whole family. Our oldest son graduated from the Air Force for his basic training. We flew down to Texas as a family and enjoyed the Alamo and the other free things there, went to some sporting events our son was allowed to attend, ate out at his favorite restaurants, and went shopping in the mall. It was our last vacation for our whole family to this day since our son is overseas. It was worth every penny.
I live in a very remote area and dont have the luxary of having my sales at home. Therefore, when I have a sale I pack my vehicle and trailer down and go to a spot where several others set up. One advantage to this is you get more customers. Experienced yardsalers love to be able to hit multiples in one stop. At the end if the day I pack what's left and then take it to goodwill, salvation army or a local charity and get tax reciepts. Not only do I have some immediate spending cash I also get a tax credit. It's a win win in my book.
Stop by the visitor's bureau or park ranger's office to find out about free activities. You can discover historical treasures,walking tours, and hikes -- very often at no cost. You get official info combined with local insights, usually a great combination for finding things to do.

My splurge this year was a much-needed trip to visit friends. I've been through a broken foot and a divorce and I needed to get the heckoutta Dodge and spend time with people who make me laugh and feel good. Money well spent!
You splurge when you have the disposable income to do so. Buying stuff you really don't need with money you really should be paying bills off with or saving for an emergency is a bad idea. It amazes me how many people spend this way, though. And we wonder why the economy is in the mess it's in. Too many people live WAY beyond their means. And it's the responsible ones having to make up the difference.

I seldom splurge. On the occasions when I do, it's usually on a small item. It's okay to splurge when you can afford it.

I usually don't indulge in splurging but there have been a couple of times we did it as a family and I look back at those times with great memories. Once was for our 25th wedding anniversary.
