The wisest investment I have ever made was in my family. To make sure I take the time to spend with my husband alone and to provide my children with the love, tools, and instruction they need to be successful.
My smartest investment was going back to school and the time and energy invested in my children. I'm proud of myself and I'm proud of the human beings my children are evolving into.
The smartest investment I've ever made was putting the time and effort in raising my three kids. I was lucky enough to be a stay at home mom. I taught them to read before entering kindergarten. Hubby and I always made sure dinner was eaten at the dinner table, with no tv, radio or other distractions. We made sure each child had a chance to discuss their day. They were listened to, not just heard. They never had televisions, game systems or computers in their rooms. The cool part was they never minded. All three of them would rather spend time with one another. It wasn't always easy, but so well worth it. We feel with this investment, we have given society three intelligent, empathetic, well adjusted adults.
My wisest investment was joining the Air Force in 1973. I got to travel to many places and live in Germany for two years. I was trained in computer programming when the computers were the size of a truck and the language was FORTRAN and you input punch cards.
The wisest invetment I have made is with my employment. My company offers an awesome pension plan which is hard to find these days. I am vested and when I retire I won't have to worry about anything. Thanks!
5 qts of synthetic oil on sale with a filter is 20$, you have to also remember that some cars take less than 5 qts! my car takes roughly 3qts so technically doing it myself saves!
My Macbook. It's improved my music, helped me further my web design skills, facilitated my art, made it infinitely easier to project manage my mom's life, boosted my social connections, and much more.
The best investment I have ever made was in myself.
I decided six years ago to quit smoking. I stopped cold turkey ...was very hard but I did it. Now, I can't believe I ever did. Thank you for the chance!
For wire hangers, cords and other metals I take them to a scrap yard. For old electronics it if a personal preference thing. I gut them and recycle the parts (plastic goes to a local recycler while the innards go tot he scrap yard). You can take old TVs and Computers, Monitors, Printers, etc. to Goodwill who will recycle them (the one I go to tests TVs and sells those that work). My flaw here is that I collect old computers, especially Apple and Macintosh models.
Paper goes to the bins in town for recycling. Cardboard goes to the local recycler as does glass (he has a bin for it now).
O yes, I have a tendency to "collect" stuff (boarder line hoarding some would say) and I struggle to toss out stuff but with some help from a friend I am making progress.
Funny you should mention cooking classes. I went to culinary school way back when. Despite the fact that I have not used that particular degree in the workforce recently it was a smart investment. I enjoy cooking myself and others it feeds my soul. Further as I work to to get healthier my knowledge of food helps me implement good choices.
Yes, I live without a cell phone and without Facebook, and Twitter (no extra entries for me). My husband and I travelled to Canada and Brazil this summer without cell phones and without our laptop computer. We will try to hold out as long as we can. A few years ago we had the free year of OnStar in one of our vehicles. That was the closest we came to having a cell phone. No cell phone bill makes wisebread sense to me.
I have invested my time to motivate people who dont see any worth in themselves.
For example I've got 2 young teen school dropouts to enrol for a welding course
that will see to their future worked out. Getting abused children linked to homes where they get proper nutrition and education. Thats about it.
I don't know if you can consider this an investment but after I got home from my first deployment to Afghanistan I had enough money to eliminate my debt. That's exactly what I did and my credit score has been good ever since(I have also payed my bill in full every month since). I never really understood the importance of a credit score but having a good one has helped me with so many things in life I can't imagine how people can afford not to have good credit.
The smartest investment I ever made was my undergraduate degree. On an investment of $15,000, I've made many times that amount since. For most people, I think the answer would be the same.
My best investment for all time was packing up my children, driving from Montana to Seattle, putting our possessions on a barge (at $.75 a pound) and moving to southeast Alaska. We lived in the tongass rain forrest, watched killer whales glide by our picture window, the three of us diving into the cold ocean near Christmas to earn a "Certificate of Insanity", to watch my son catch a ling cod fish that was longer than him, to see the amazement in their eyes at the vastness of mountains & oceans, to watch my son become fluent in the tlingit language, and for me to serve victims of domestic violence & sexual assault. Even though we are back in Montana due to conditions beyond our control, I live for the day that I can move back. My children are respectful men now due to their experiences they lived in Sitka Alaska.
The smartest investment i've ever made has got to be my Bianchi San Jose. This bicycle takes me everywhere from work to play. And I'm getting exercise while lowering my carbon footprint.
i PURCHASED A MITSUBISHI ECLIPSE AUTOMOBILE FOR 800 DOLLARS AND 1 MONTH LATER SOLD IT FOR 1900 DOLLARS. IT SOLD IN 2 DAYS. THAT IS A GOOD RETURN. MINUS A 25 DOLLAR FEE FOR AN AD.
The smartest investment I ever made was taking advantage of an early retirement offered at the job I was working for almoste 30 years. I still work although part time in field I enjoy, but the best thing is I actually go to work! This investment in myself preservation is giving me the best return.
Best investment i ever made was 20 years ago i purchased a large Star Wars toy collection from a Garage Sale for $500, the collection i purchased is now worth well over $25,000. Gonna hold onto to it another year or two and then will be using it to put a down payment on a house :-)

My biggest investment was when I bought a hybrid car. It saves me money on gas while helping the environment- I rarely ever fill gas these days!

Thanks for the contest.
My best investment is my family. It's the type of investment that does not stop and I'm happy with this life long choice.

This list is frustratingly disjointed since you insisted on factoring crime rates into the equation. What do they have to do with natural disasters?
The best investment I ever made was my house.
It's the safest way to financial security, plus you always have a
place to call home.

My smartest investment was the application fee for my current job. So many positive things have come from my current career.

Great point! I think learning HTML was a great foundation for all kinds of computer stuff I wound up learning. Go HTML!
