Just - I've seen people use those plastic pencil holders that look like heavier duty zip-lock bags. They cost more than envelopes, but they'll last a longer. You might give that a try.

Elizabeth - The envelope system can work really well even for just one or two "problem" categories, so using it to manage your grocery budget is a great idea.

  • I Finally Canceled Comcast Cable…Before It Hurt More Than My Wallet   14 years 41 weeks ago

hi, Im in a desperate situation with comcast
After being told 3 times I would no longer receive incurring charges, and after calling 11 times to cancellations department, after 3 long months. i now have a 250 dollar bill i can't even begin to pay. originally I wanted to get 1.5mb I got stuck with 12, and a phone, even though I clearly stated i wanted 1.5.

I got behind and called the get it reduced to what I wanted. the rep told me to pay a certain amount of money, and I could get it reduced. So i did, but I couldn't get it reduced. sO i told them to cancel my services, and they said they did. well this went on for a month. Last month I sent the box back, because i got another charge, and they said that i couldn't cancel until the box was back. well I sent it back and contacted comcast to make sure it was. Well it wasn't, and they said now I need to call this number. I called it 7 times attempting to reach someone. and I did, but I got disco'd on again. I told them mfers I wouldn't pay a dime, and called them back later, and after about 2 attempts I reached someone and they said it was cancelled, and I would not receive charges. I decided to check back with comcast and they said it was still not cancelled, from a different source, then i went into a fury, and they recommended calling again, and I was swinging around the SUE word like it was a bat. well I was told to call again, and I did and told them this was my last attempt. Well I got ahold of a lady and we got it 'cancelled.' I contacted comcast and made sure it was and they said it was.

Well a whoel month later, I just incurred another charge. And I YELLED SUPERVISOR. I would not speak to any one but the supervisor. once I got a hold of him, first thing I said was I'm sueing.
He explained to me that he respects my decision, and that I would continued to be charged, until I paid off everything, including all the charges i've incurred.

Now they have me in a hole I can never pay off

The smartest investment I have ever made is time. Time I spent with my daughter after she born through her elementary school years. I stopped working to take each day with her: loving, teaching, nurturing her. I do not regret a a single second. She's just begun her sophomore year at GSU. :)

My best investment has been my laptop. I travel with my husband for his job. My laptop saves me money by allowing me to keep in contact with family & friends without having to use precious, expensive cell phone minutes. Wi Fi is everywhere so we don't have to pay for a connection. It also keeps me busy and up to date on my newest venture of selling Thirty One products!

The smartest investment I’ve ever made was a robotic floor sweeper.
I turn it on when I leave the house and the floors are clean when I come home.
It sucks up the dirt so there is virtally no dusting required during the week.
It can go under beds and couches, places that I honeslty left unswept for weeks at a time. It saves my back from aching to bend over to sweep into a dustpan.

From everything I've read, it's not illegal. It IS illegal to sell coupons, so people are actually giving them away for free and charging for the time it took to clip the coupon, which is completely legal. You can read more here.

I especially agree with point 5 - my parents have been married for 49 years and still have the same toaster they got as a wedding present. Meanwhile, I am on my third toaster in about 20 years. Quality is slipping away, and a well-made appliance or piece of furniture is a terrific find.

This is an UBBER easy question!! By far and away the "the smartest investment you’ve ever made" was in my sexy wife Sarah. She is my everything! My soul mate, my best friend and yes mother to our perfect daughter Charlotte Grace. I invested everything I have into our relationship and she did the same. The outcome is a lifelong journy of happiness :)

We use it and it works. As long as we actually remember to bring the envelopes. When we don't the purchases go on the debt card and we "try" to remember to deposit that amount or take less the next month.

Biggest headache - our envelopes regularly disintegrate - we've tried tyvek and those don't fall apart just kind of loose their ability to stay in shape and still hold the money.

Careful with trimming your own bangs, believe it or not, they can be the most finicky part of your hairstyle. If you go to a half decent hairstylist they should do free bang trims between haircuts.

I believe the best thing I have ever done was give birth. I realize as the years go on and I look at my grandchildren, it's the greatest.

The smartest investment that I have ever made was actually in myself to further my education pursuing a professional degree. I made a decision long ago to do whatever it took to make sure I finished my education. I am now a practicing dentist and very proud of my accomplishments

But isn't that illegal? Most of the coupons I have seen are void if transferred.

I know that the store has no feasible way of knowing that you aren't the person they provided the discount to, but that doesn't change the fact that (in most cases that I know of) you are paying for and intentionally using a coupon or code that is void.

  • I Pay for Things You Get for Free   14 years 41 weeks ago

Does anybody else have experiences with buying coupons, positive or negative?

The best investment ever was the time I spent reading The Total Money Makeover book that was gifted to me. It took a few months (more than 12) to 'get around to' reading the book, but the ideas and methods in it (and our family's implementation of them) have done more than anything else to secure our future.

In case that isn't what you were looking for, and you want something I actually spent money on and invested in that way: my sewing machine. The creative time spent using it is my own form of "therapy," and there is no other way I could afford custom-fit, quality clothing.

Yikes! I thought it was bad when I had to set two alarms for a bit. Do you keep them all by your bed, or scattered around?

Hmmm - my smartest investment was in choosing the right people and equipment to help with my business. I feel like since I have the best tools I am getting a lot more out of each project. The next best and more traditional investment would be my vanguard funds!

A few years ago I invested in a small amount of "junk" silver. I think it's doubled in value since then- kind of reassuring to have something I can actually hold.

The smartest investment I have ever made is my college education. While it has been the biggest expense in my life by far, my degree has opened so many doors to me and allows me to have a job I'm happy with and allows me to earn more money.

OK, after reading that comment about the thousand dollar bike, now I know what my smartest investment was! I put about 1200 miles on my used 1970's Schwinn from the Salvation Army every year. It cost ten bucks. (About 20m a day in the summer, and less during the school year.) Ten years strong- I spend 50 bucks a year tuning it up. It is ugly, has rusty handlebars, and rides like dream! If I hit the lottery, I would still use this bike, but I might get new handlebars.

The smartest investment I've made is investing my money into college. Although I am still looking for a job, I know I have the potential to have a great job and live a successful life.

the smartest investment i made was taking the (sometimes) painstaking time to play with and be with my boys when they were growing up. getting in the floor and making towns with blocks and driving little cars with them etc. the return? priceless-boys who turn in to young men and you begin to see those values coming from them, toward their own children...and on and on...

The smartest investment I ever made had to be when I was 18 years old and worked for Walmart as a cart pusher, and put about $10 from my check every two weeks into the Walmart stock market. And when I move to a different state and left Walmart I sold my shares and made over $400.

Probably the home we are in now. It was a really crappy repo we bought 11 years ago and have fixed up. Even with prices declining, it still holds a good value.Of course this is after investing in my children's lives by homeschooling them ,and our education.
