Easily. I use Google Voice and my computer for about 1/2 of my calls already, and I have a home phone (well, a VoIP setup that rings cordless home phones).

Yes, I could live without a cell phone. Although, I do love the convenience of my phone. It is not a necessity.

I sure could! I lived 36 YEARS without that pain in my back end(cell phone), and if it were up to me, I'd live the rest of my life on earth without one!!!! Guess what cell phones are? A cowards way to talk to one another! Texting B.S.! Cell phones are distractions, and an appendage of this generation- whom are very "me" oriented and LAZY! How do I know this? I have a 16 yr old son! I have a cell I was "ordered" to have from my boss. I also have to have it because I'm still driving my son here and there, and pay phones are now obsolete. Guess what I'd LIKE to do with this slippery, irritating, money draining piece of sht? Skip it like a smooth stone across the big lake and watch it disappear!!!!

I remember life without cell phones and email. You had to plan for things more. And I tried to know where the nearest payphone was. Now there are hardly any payphones.

So I guess I could live without my cell phone, but the internet- that's another story!

I definitely could, but my husband won't let me dump it in case I have some sort of emergency. I hate them.

  • 7 Things to Consider Before Becoming a Stay-at-Home Parent   14 years 47 weeks ago

I have to say I COMPLETELY DISAGREE with the food costing more when you're a SAHP. I've never heard anyone say that, only the complete opposite. When you're home you cook at home 10 times more than when you work full time! Cooking at home means money saved!!!! And business meetings and socializing at lunch? Socialize before or after lunch or have someone over for lunch. So much cheaper.

Also, children who stay home with a parent are not unsocialized. Very rare does a parent stay home all the time! I know I go to a playgroup and a playground and at least 2 walks a day, every single day! I find children who are raised at home much more well-balanced then any daycare child. The daycare children I see at the school are usually the ones in trouble at school probably due to neglect.

And lastly, well this article is great, what about the fact that a lot of times, there is no choice but to stay home!!! Working full time $1200.... Daycare was $900... so $300 (plus extra gas and extra food costs as we had take out more) was all I made... and that was with ****1**** kid at home. Why would I miss my child's life to work my butt off for next to no money.

The smartest investment I've ever made was learning a foreign language. I was able to meet my husband abroad and move to a different country!

Are you kidding? I'm not as bad as some people, but I feel like I've been tossed back into the stone age without it.

The smartest investment I ever made was to establish a defered annuity. This will help me to live on disability, if there is any left after taking bits here and t.ere to survive. With no increase in what I have to live on I try to do without. It is amazing the things you can do without, and I don't miss any of it. Now if only the cost of living would help out I would be saving money by the buckets, almost.

I cannot live without my cell phone. I have an iPhone and it not only acts as a cellphone but also as a camera, alarm clock, calendar, email center, and GPS. I honestly felt like my quality of life has improved since I'm able to have so many tools in the palm of my hand. Furthermore, I'm able to get updates for numerous websites such as Wisebread. I cannot and will not live without my iPhone... haha okay that's a little exaggerated but you get the point. =)

  • How Long Can You Stay in Your Home After You Stop Paying the Mortgage?   14 years 47 weeks ago

C'mon guy...you have no clue what you are talking about. It doesn’t hurt anyone. Banks make money on their foreclosed homes...it a business for them. And it is built in to your mortgage that foreclosure may happen. It’s like that is stores...they calculate how much merchandise will be stolen and they put it in their pricing so no one loses. Mortgage companies take out insurance on your home to save their butts so when you default then they collect on the insurance and the sheriff sale. And why can big corporations do this and it’s a savvy financial decision and when the consumer does it we are deadbeats. Don’t judge cus you may be in this situation someday. Get educated before you write anything down or give advice and do the research...people that are walking away lost their jobs...have to relocate or the mortgage company escrowed their taxes 2 ½ year and made the mortgage too expensive cus they did a loan mod and got turned down. There are a lot of reasons but most are legit and mortgage companies don’t want to help at all. Also why do you think it is moral for the mortage companie to give out morgages that reip off people like no doc with all interest and arms that most peiple will have moprtgages twice tha amout in a few year. Mortgage have riped off so many people and they seem to have ethics..I think not. And when you call the reps at a mortrage company...they dont care and are rude to you...PLEASE!!! I agree with anyone who has been through hell to walk away and anyway you cant get blood from a stone so where are these people going to get the money to recoop. They have to get from underneath this nightmare and start new.

The smartest investment that I ever made was putting away funds for my daughters educations while they were babies, it was a very wise move on my behalf because I had no idea that at the age of 44 I would be stricken with renal failure and ended up on dialysis..

I had no interest in cell phones until I was in NYC on 9/11. The next day my unhusband and I both got cell phones. During recent weather emergencies, it was usable when my electricity (and landline and computer) was out. Think I'll keep it!

"Staying Healthy" is the best medicare plan. If everyone in the nation was health conscious we wouldn't have as big of a health care problem in our country.

Except for work, I tend not to carry my cell phone around. If need be I could get by without it.

Sometimes, in my dreams, I am free from my cell phone. I still don't know if that's a sweet dream or a nightmare. Alas, I don't think I could live without my Blackberry, though.

  • Ask the Readers: Could You Survive Without a Cell Phone?   14 years 47 weeks ago

I finally bowed to pressure about a year ago and got a cell phone. While it's handy to have for emergencies and while I'm out and about, I could easily return to not having one again.

I have no landline and could survive without a cell phone, but I wouldn't be able to speak with my computer-illiterate family members.

Chivas is way too harsh for the money. If I'm not springing for a single malt, Ballantine's is smooth and medium-bodied value choice.
I'll try the Korbel, but I have little hope of finding a sippable brandy under $30.
Try some of the no-name flavored boozes (spiced rum, coconut, sambuca). Some of them do very nicely at half the price of the advertised brands, and after the first one or two drinks, who will notice?

  • Social Security Is Not a Ponzi Scheme   14 years 47 weeks ago

You're both right. The 401(k) (and similar) plans are a fine way to save for retirement, but they're not a solution to old-age poverty.

The point of Social Security is not that it covers your pension needs—it does a pretty poor job of that. The point is that it ensures that the elderly and disabled are not destitute. For some decades now, it has done that very well.

  • Ask the Readers: Could You Survive Without a Cell Phone?   14 years 47 weeks ago

I don't use a cell phone. I use google voice which fits all my needs. If I need to use a cell phone, I can generally borrow one from someone and I share one with my husband.
