    Pete,

We have changed the wording and are very sorry for the offense. It wasn't meant as a slight or disregard for the position. It was a very literal term for the person driving the ambulance who needs to locate the address. The writer did not mean it to say that was all the EMT does. Thank you for your comment. We definitely do not want to keep offending anyone without realizing it.

Alas I too became interested in the art during the 90s and began with a frenzy of brewing... The novelty has wore off some but I still enjoy home brewing and learned alot along the way... I recommend having a cylinder of CO2 with regulator on hand altho they're expensive brand new... But you can force carbonate your brew if you're kegging or purge bottles during the bottling phase.. It's real easy to get 'nasties' in your brew if any oxygen is introduced when filling bottles and purging with CO2 eliminates that possibility... My best brew was a brown ale with a packet of honey glaze that came with a ham... Instead of using on the ham I poured it in the wort during the boil... The hint of cinnamon was a hit... Hey, great subject Wisebread - keep up the good work CHEERS kooler

  • 5 Reasons Not to Apply for a Loan Modification in the Home Affordable Modification Program (HAMP)   16 years 4 weeks ago

I just successfully modified HAMP with Citi Mortgage, for the second time. My deal was Fantatastic. Everything went perfect my payments are reduced to so little. Don't give up some people really are getting help. Just be sure you really can show income to pay the mortgage. You can figure the 31% out yourself. It is not a scam, I have no fees, I am only paying interest on 1/2 my real principle Forever and the most it will Ever go is 4% on 1/2 my principle. Forever. I will never see the remaining $230,000 until I go to pay it off. And then I will owe it. For now it is like a have a 2% loan of $200,000.

It is offensive to those working in the EMS professions to refer to them as an "ambulance driver". It's just like calling an african american the n word.

Every person who responds on an EMS crew has completed rigorous training in lifesaving procedures and equipment and has passed licensing exams administered by the state. To refer to them as an ambulance driver is to imply that an ambulance and it's staff is a glorified taxi with red lights and sirens when really it is so much more.

Even at the most basic level of training: First Responder, a person must complete months of training including practice scenarios, written and practical exams, and typically field ride time so that when they roll up to your house they are more than capable of handling your emergency and saving you or your family member from an untimely death.

Ambulances and EMS responder vehicles are stocked with life saving medications and medical equipment such as breathing tubes, epi-pens, AED's, and many, many, more.

I just bought a brand new white t-shirt with a dark colored design logo that covers about a third of the shirt. after washing on cold and putting in the dryer on low setting i take it out and all over the logo i can tell its faded and is covered with what looks like little cotton lints everywhere on the logo which totally ruined the look. im guessing its the dryer that caused the damage. other than hang drying the t-shirt what can i do to prevent this in the future? i just wasted $30 on this shirt :(

  • Financial IQ Test: How Healthy Is Your Disability Insurance?   16 years 4 weeks ago

Thanks for the comments, guys. Disability insurance (most insurance for that matter) is easy to ignore or gloss over, especially if we have coverage through work. We assume that we have what we need - often until we need it - at which point (hopefully) we aren't wrong. Sadly, this isn't always the case.

  • Homebrewed Beer: Make Your Own and Save Money?   16 years 4 weeks ago

Maria and Spouse: I started home brewing in the 90's after taking a "Creative Activities Program" short course in brewing at the local university. My kitchen brewery has evolved into a dedicated brewery kitchen in a converted garage. I brew because the beer is (almost always) excellent. It's not a money-saver if you buy quality ingredients and things like temperature controllers, mashing systems, and wort coolers. It is, however, a satisfying hobby. A couple of tips: 1. Keep a record of your recipes and how well you liked the beer. 2. Cleanliness really is next to godliness when you're brewing. I've bookmarked your site and will be returning for your well-written updates. Good luck - keep us posted. Helene Jackson, McNeal AZ

Honestly? Male bonding? I guess I should be grateful to live in a city in the upper midwest where craft beers and brewing aren't held as exclusive "guy time."

  • Homebrewed Beer: Make Your Own and Save Money?   16 years 4 weeks ago

An interesting post-- I guess its worth looking into depending on how much you drink the stuff.

I personally cut way back when I realized how much it really cost me, but I guess I would explore this if I ever started "partaking" regularly again.

The Sun causes colour fade, so drying them inside out on the line will cause the inside to fade instead of the outside. Making them look better for longer.

  • 16 Ways to Make Your Clothes Last Longer Without Spending Big   16 years 4 weeks ago

In my experience, most people dry clean suits much too often.

The best thing you can do with a jacket is take it off as soon as you get home, and hang it up, on a jacket hanger, in the room - not in the wardrobe for an hour or two. (The kind of twisted-metal hangers that you get back from dry cleaners are the natural predator of the jacket.)

The second best thing you can do with a jacket is never wear it two days in a row. Fibres last much longer if given time to relax fully after wears.

The third best thing you can do is buy an extra pair of trousers (pants in US English?) every time you buy a suit. If properly looked after, jackets will last much longer than their companions. Alas, this means that if you wear a suit to work most days, you're going to need two or more of them.

Please remember if you are dry cleaning things, that the chemicals used can cause diziness and take a while to off-gas. If you are picking your clothes up from the dry cleaners and then have an hour or more ride home, please either open the windows or put the cleaning in the boot (trunk in US English?) before you take the trip. Passing out while driving is about the most dangerous thing your clothes can ever make you do.

  • Homebrewed Beer: Make Your Own and Save Money?   16 years 4 weeks ago

I have a mate who makes homemade "scrumpy" (british for apple cider), quite tasty really, it comes out at about 50c a litre. Of course the ultimate money saver would be to quit drinking beer and just drink tea instead:)

  • How to check if your mortgage statement is correct   16 years 4 weeks ago

I noticed on my mortgage statement some extra charges.
I noticed a $45 charge on my March 2010 statement.
Then looking back I found a $90 charge on my Feb 2010 statement, another $90 charge on my Jan 2010 statement and another $45 charge billed to my upcoming April payment statement.

Then when I call customer service to have this explained they tell me that the regional office authorized a company named "Home sweet home investment co" to CLEAN MY HOUSE.

GREEN TREE servicing mortgage company says they have invoices from this company for CLEANING MY KITCHEN, CLEANING MY YARD, CLEANING MY BATHROOMS.

    sAY wHAT ????????????????????

    An absolute fabrication.
They need a WARRENT signed by a judge upon probable cause to get pass me and my AR-15.

I was given a name to contact at the regional office.
This name, JEFF CONIG is who authorized these IMAGINARY cleaning crew fees.
NOBODY BUT ME CLEANS MY HOUSE.

They must have me mistaken for a foreclosure that did need to be cleaned before they could sell it.
This is the only reasonable persumption.
But I have to wait 2 days until the regional office opens to contact this person.

He better not call in sick on Monday.

If they continue to tell this story then they are involved in scamming me, FRAUD.

JEFF CONIG has NEVER been inside of my house.
He does not know what my kitchen looks like or what cleaning it does or does not need.

However their mistaking me for somebody else has occured me several hundred dollars of "extra charges".

And these charges are even on my next months future bill.

I must get immediately resolve plus some lipstick on my ass or Im going nationwide with this story on national radio and of course in the bloggesphere, probably after a few created youtube videos.
    :)

  • How to Use Up Remaining Balances on Prepaid Gift Cards   16 years 4 weeks ago

I'm really mystified why make life so complicated with all those gift cards, debit cards, you name it. So much turbulation.
I use cash for small purchases, a Visa credit card for larger ones or something I want to keep record of, and occasionally a check that I keep in my wallet.
Gift cards are a way for corporations to make free money your money; all those little balances and misplaced and outdated cards add up to million$!
Oh yes, if you pay the Visa balance at the end of the month you've got free credit.

  • Homebrewed Beer: Make Your Own and Save Money?   16 years 4 weeks ago

Guest, here is what Charlie Papazian (mentioned above) has to say:

"There are many advantages to kegging your beer . . . there are no bottles to wash.  Kegging beer is an incredibly simple process, but it does require an investment in kegs and tapping system apparatus.  The cash you will spend in order to get set up may bother you a bit, but once that expenditure is a memory, you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner.  There are no homebrewers out there who have ever regretted making kegging an option. "

So, yes, definitely an option.  However, it might not be necessarily a cost-saving one, initially.

  • Homebrewed Beer: Make Your Own and Save Money?   16 years 4 weeks ago

Excuse my ignorance, but is bottling necessary? Can't you store in a keg or some other larger container for home use?

  • Homebrewed Beer: Make Your Own and Save Money?   16 years 4 weeks ago

I've had a lot of luck getting my equipment and bottles on Criagslist a a significant discount. I don't think I have bought any equipment or bottles new. I set up a RSS feed for my beer equipment searches, that way I can jump on them quickly.

Ciders are a good way to go, too. I found a local farmer who sells me the raw cider at a discount at the end of the season. I met him at the Farmers Market. The local Bee Keepers have a Mead Maker special deal too.

  • How to Sell Your Hair for Cash   16 years 4 weeks ago

How much do you pay for 12" untreated, well quality hair? Just wondering since one of my freinds wants to donate hair after I did, and we want to see if I made a mistake or not :), I just saw a comment that I liked, we can sell the hair and then donate an amount to the charity!! :)

  • Homebrewed Beer: Make Your Own and Save Money?   16 years 4 weeks ago

Ah, cleaning stuff. Well once the wort has been boiled you have to cool it down fairly fast after you done with the boil. If you have it automated you can leave it to and start cleaning.

Another easier way of brewing is to try ciders (you might call them hard ciders) and other simple alcohols. It costs me 5 euro to get enough apple juice to make 4 liters of cider plus a euro or two for yeast. Two weeks later I have something alcoholic, a month or two more it's a bit nicer :) Grape juice is a decent alternative for making wine.

  • The cost of a free ride - why not to use a buyer's agent   16 years 4 weeks ago

Sorry but there are many things wrong with this picture:

    * To think that the listing agent is working on your behalf. First and foremost, his/her responsibility is to the seller. Dual agency is applicable even if two agents who work for the same broker are performing a transaction.
    * To think a listing agent would lower his commission from 6% to 3.5%. There is variable commission (which is not always applicable), but it would normally entail 0.5 to 1 percent.
    * A 'free ride'? Sorry, too easy.

There are many other fallacies to point out in your story but I'd rather just leave it at that. Good luck with your home and future purchases.

  • How to Make Moonshine   16 years 4 weeks ago

The kettle idea is fine, it just doesn't hold enough really unless you're aiming at only making about a half bottle at a time. The guy on youtube must have had bigger kettle than the one you have; to get 3 pints from 3 litres you have to be distilling something that was already above 50% alcohol.
And Zorcy, can you talk me through this again to see if I've understood the steam thing.
You run a tube from the spout of the kettle, shaped like a conventional worm. You said in an earlier post about crimping the end of it and making holes in it to let the steam out, is that right?
Then THIS goes into your wash in another sealed container, with another water-cooled worm to condense it?
Basically distilling your whole wash in a doubler or thumper?
Have I understood this correctly? It seems a very efficient way of doing it, alright; you could connect a series of them and do a triple distillation for the cost of heating one run??
A question or 2 here. How much steam do you need?? Do you need to apply the same input of steam as the alcohol you'll get out? Like for instance, if i have enough wash to give me say 4 litres of alcohol from a 20 litre batch of it, do i need to put 4 litres of steam through it?
Your man above with the kettle would have to keep a sharp eye on it and refill the kettle a couple of times, wouldn't he??
And how would he even KNOW (with using a sealed unit) if the kettle was in imminent danger of boiling dry??
    Just wondering............

  • DIY Shampoo: The Baking Soda Experiment   16 years 4 weeks ago

In most cases, no, it is in fact chemically synthesized. But it's still a perfectly good substance to use (in moderation) on and in your body.

Rather than skip the shampoo entirely, some people might be happy with the results if they just used less shampoo. The amounts of detergents people use (toothpaste, shampoo, dishwasher, and clothes washer) are often far, far greater than what is actually needed for a good cleaning. (I've read of people washing clothes in plain water seven times using just the residual soap left clinging to the fabric.)

The effectiveness of modern detergents is partly to blame. Many people think there's no emulsification of oil going on unless they see suds, but this just isn't so. A little bit will do the trick.
