  • Homebrewed Beer: Make Your Own and Save Money?   16 years 4 weeks ago

Just a bit of a warning: Homebrewing is a very addictive hobby and will eventually cost quite a bit in the long run once you get very serious. I joke that sure my first kit cost $89 for the equipment when I started in 2001, but in total I spent thousands of dollars while constantly "upgrading" my brew equipment over the years.

That being said, it is worth it :)

I just read your comment aloud to my husband and he cracked up and said, "Excellent point - I might drink more beer!"

We noticed the top layer is starting to darken.  Supposedly, this means we're closing in on time to bottle?

  • Homebrewed Beer: Make Your Own and Save Money?   16 years 4 weeks ago

I am a homebrewer as well. I enjoy it as a fun hobby and way to have "guy time" with my closest friends. I am a big fan of hard to find microbrews and imports, so this is a great compliment to my beer drinking hobby.

I did not take it up for the money saving reasons you outlined about, I do it for the love of beer. Historically, I have spent about $50-$75 per batch, which ends up being about $1-$1.50 per beer. That is a little less than what I probably would spend on a six pack, but I tend to drink more beer when I end up with 25 in the fridge after splitting a batch with a buddy.

  • Do You Have Your TV Converter Box Yet?   16 years 4 weeks ago

I am having the same problem. My Dad is 83 also and
he has a problem with one remote let alone two! I thought the remote for the converter box would be able to be programmed to operate the tv also but it doesn't have that option. Please let me know if you find a universal remote.

  • Financial IQ Test: How Healthy Is Your Disability Insurance?   16 years 4 weeks ago

I had no idea that the disability figures were so high. I know I have disability insurance through work so I have never really worried about it.

I need to verify how good it actually is.

  • Look Out Consumers: Debt Collections Get Scarier   16 years 4 weeks ago

I've been dealing with a debt collector for some time now--they won't validate the debt or and other proceedure. They even went to a local court and got a court order which I ignored. They then got a "contempt of court" issued. My attorney got that knocked down within minutes of issue. We are looking at the court order--which garnishsed my Social Security Disability. So far, we have them for lieing to the court, violation of Social Security laws, and falsely stating that I was in contempt.
And to top everything off--these people are supposed to be lawyers!

Boy I failed that one miserably!

I'll have to dig into this one real soon! Looks like it would be well worth my time to.

    Thanks!

  • Clever Tax Move for the Un- and Under-Employed   16 years 4 weeks ago

While you should certainly consult a bankruptcy attorney if you think these issues might affect you, my understanding is that since 2005, IRAs and 401(k)s are treated similarly in bankruptcy.

For IRAs only first $1 million is exempt, while money in a 401(k) is exempt without a cap, but that's not a threshold that's going to affect most people.

It's true that rules vary for different categories of compartments for holding assets, and for that reason I've long encouraged people to use all the compartments available to them. But those differences rarely add up to enough reason to leave your 401(k) with a former employer. The advantages of easier access, greater investment choice, more interested customer service, and (often) lower cost mean that rolling your money over into an IRA is usually a better choice.

  • How to Buy Used Furniture   16 years 4 weeks ago

If you need furniture, why not "shop" friends and relatives old stuff before looking outside the family-circle. Pass the word that you're looking for a gently used "X" or a "Y". Chances are one of your relatives has exactly what you're looking for in good condition (and without bedbugs ... ick!). Most often they'll just give it to you, and also be darned happy their old faithful "X" found a good home. They'll probably also be happy to hand you all the old linens or knick-knacks bought years ago to complement the item.

With the exception of a china cabinet I was foolish enough to splurge on in my early 20's (and wasn't worth it, either, it turned out to be overpriced pressboard with a wood veneer), my entire house is period-furnished in the "Early Yard Sale" style. I've got a Victorian inspired living room, a colonial inspired den, a mid-century modern bedroom, an art deco bedroom, a colonial bedroom, a Victorian bedroom, a 1930's "depression" style guest bedroom, and a mission style office.

Each room is like a unique flower in a bouquet, and put together it works like a beautiful bouquet because like items are grouped together in the same room and color is used to pull the effect together. Sometimes that means a pretty daffodil serving platter ends up mounted on a plate rack and hung on the wall in a bedroom like a picture because that room has the correct theme, while a pretty floral antique chamber pot ends with a bouquet of flowers on it in the living room because it originates from the correct era, but that's what being a creative person is all about.

I think people today put too much stock in spending money on some "style" out of a style magazine instead of creating their own. What could be better than the sense of history you feel when you open a drawer in grandma's old bureau or sit down on that nice solid couch you reupholstered and remembering happily playing on it as a kid whenever you went visit great aunt Ethel?

  • Clever Tax Move for the Un- and Under-Employed   16 years 4 weeks ago

Although there may be tax savings, I would be very cautious about advising somebody who's been long-term unemployed about converting all or some of their 401(k) into an IRA.

If you lose your job and than something else bad happens like you get sick or can't pay the mortgage on your home, you may need to file for bankruptcy protection. A 401(k) cannot be touched by your bankruptcy creditors, but your IRA is fair game.

If you transfer that money to save a few pennies on taxes and then stay unemployed long enough to eat through your savings cushion and can no longer meet your bills, you'll get a nasty double whammy. First, you'll lose your IRA. Then, the IRS is going to come after you to pay the taxes on the money you took out of your IRA and (if Chapter 11) often will not "forgive" the taxes on that IRA you "used" to pay off your creditors.

The 401(k) may be boring and difficult to shift around your investment portfolio if you leave it sitting with your former employer, but at least it will be safe from your creditors if this recession drags on and your safety net goes down the toilet.

  • The vicious Home Rental Scam – don’t get conned.   16 years 4 weeks ago

    Hi,

I saw this ad too and I was kind of excited about it but to me it seems like a very nice deal which we can say is too good to really be true. However, I tried searching for his name but it won't come up so I kind of searched online and found this comment. So what was the scam about really?

  • How to Buy Used Furniture   16 years 4 weeks ago

I don't want to cast a damper on this thread, but having just endured the nightmarish, expensive battle against bed bugs I shudder to think about ever taking used furniture into my home again. I received an unwanted but useful education about these horrible little creatures and now know what a huge epidemic we have. While many people have brought them home from hotel rooms (http://bedbugregistry.com) and others are infested from visitors or from neighboring apartments, a substantial number of victims report bringing the bugs in via used furniture gotten through Free Cycle or Craigslist or found on the street. As the eggs and nymphs are almost invisible to the naked eye, it's not always possible to find them on inspection. Both wood and upholstered furniture can harbor them. Bedbugs are not gotten due to uncleanliness or poverty, although these issues can contribute to the difficulty of eradicating them. For anyone interested in further reading about this serious and spreading infestation, here is a really comprehensive website: http://bedbugger.com.

  • My Small-Town Move That Ended The Job-Search Blues   16 years 4 weeks ago

I am burnt out. I grew up on a small farm well outside of town, a samll town of about 5,000. I thought about how the life there changed so little, and longed for more. Now, I am a senior NCO in the Army, and usually have to work in a position above my actual rank and pay grade. I am well into my third tour of duty in Iraq, and am literally burnt out. I thought of how nice it would be to have a job with no responsibility, no stress. I could be that guy who changes oil at Jiffy Lube... there is no such thing as overtime, and the time away is taking its toll. before I left for this current tour, it broke my heart when my wife called me at work and she was craying, and asked if she had to eat dinner alone again, and that I might as well have been in Iraq already. I love serving my country, but what is a guy supposed to do?

  • Clever Tax Move for the Un- and Under-Employed   16 years 4 weeks ago

This strategy could work well for other investments as well. Suppose you are looking to rebalance your portfolio; now could be a great time to pay a minimum on capital gains taxes since you're in a lower tax bracket. Of course, you wouldn't reap those long-term tax benefits associated with the Roth but you could save substantially on taxes.

I think if you're buying a substantial piece of furniture, it can make a lot of sense to try and buy something antique (even a modern antique!)

Look what the rich do... old classics keep they're value. New stuff is worthless almost as soon as you sit on it.

Funny you mentioned that!  While my experiences with the little gadget have been hit or miss, it did work well to mash up the blueberries as shown in my picture (see the little guy in the photo?)  I like it for baby food and for mixing up my breakfast shakes.  Good tip!
