  • Why I (Heart) My High Deductible Health Insurance Plan   16 years 22 weeks ago

From purely and economics/statistics point of view. people always make the same mistake of insuring things they can afford to lose, don't do that, insurance companies make a killing from people insuring their stupid phones, remember they always know the probability they are going to write you a check, you don't (other good examples here are dental and vision coverage). Only insure things you can't afford to lose. I think if the Gov is looking for the fat to cut from the medical system it's in this area (I'm a democrat who studied mathematics at one point in my life). set your deductible with this in mind, If you get a $5000 dollar bill in the mail today would it bankrupt you? or a $50,000 or $500. People seem to push their employers for excessive medical coverage and then health providers can charge whatever they want for things you don't need, (you don't think it cost you but it catches up, it has to). trim back your insurance coverage, pay for as much out of pocket as you can afford (using an HSA is a great way to do that) and by all means insure the rest, you'll be richer, the medical system will have to be more honest about small cost and we'll all be better off (except insurance companies that have people brain washed into thinking they need excessive health coverage, they will get screwed). High deductible health insurance is where it's at, if we don't embrace this we have to go with universal health care, but personally I prefer to have an open market for the low cost stuff, I think it'll be better.

  • How to Sell Your Hair for Cash   16 years 22 weeks ago

I am looking at selling my daughter's hair and I was wondering if you would be willing to help me out with some insight or information regarding this, She has strawberry blond hair and it is roughly 16 inches for root to tip and I was wondering if you would be interested and if so how much would it go for?

I am looking at cutting 12 inches off. So if you would not mind responding and giving me a bit of insight on what I should do and how to go about doing so. I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you for the time to read this as well as your time in replying to it as well

  • Getting Free Stuff at Walgreens   16 years 22 weeks ago

From my understanding, when other stores take Register Rewards it's not because they accept competitor coupons per se, it's just that RR actually are manufacturer's coupons. It says right on them, "manufacturer's coupon." Any store can get reimbursed for them, so theoretically any store should be willing to take them.

In practice, I get flack from almost any cashier and the store director at my local Jewel nixed them as well. However, I did use some successfully at Target recently. I'm planning to try it at Dominick's since the manager there told me "as long as it's a manufacturer's coupon" about a different kind of coupon.

  • How to Survive (and Thrive!) in a Job You Hate   16 years 22 weeks ago

You people need to quit. Some of you complaining about jobs and you actually work in a humane environment....putting up legos and plastic dinosaurs on your monitors...lol...
you know what I do for a living? I work in a blast furnace.
Need I say more....how would you like to get burned all the time, spend hours lifting heavy bricks in the snow.....swinging sledgehammers standing next to a fiery hot taphole.....you people need to be greatful. I could only wish I had a MONITOR.....I could only pray for a job where I sit in a cubicle....working in a blast furnace is like being in a giant fireplace. Many of you aren't greatful for what you got and you need to stop . I bust for 8-12 hours a day. I got no personal days, no sick days, and I work outside on uneven terrain, shoveling heavy coke breeze in extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, with loud noisy cranes blasting their horns over my head all day and guys drenched in oil all over their tyvex suits from cleaning up tons of tar and grease. I do backbreaking work. Those of you complaining, you need to grow the hell up.

  • Getting Free Stuff at Walgreens   16 years 22 weeks ago

Great tips! I live a few steps from a Walgreens and visit often. I grab coupons and head there every weekend to stockpile on certain products that are already on sale. I bought 10 packs of foil wrapper the other day for $1.50. Should last me a while!

  • Stock a Natural Food Pantry for Less   16 years 22 weeks ago

You have some good points on how to stock a pantry for less. But, many of us can totally stock our pantry just like that but have no idea what to do with the food after that. People on-the-go or people working 3 jobs don't have time to cook and some don't even know how to cook. If you're addicted to highly processed, cheap food then you will have a hard time switching to beans, barley and oats. I'd like to see a post on HOW to eat healthy when you're on-the-go AND on a budget.

  • For Love or Money: Must It Be One or the Other?   16 years 22 weeks ago

I dunno, I have to say that I'd love your job, Nora. ;) So far, I'm working on how to track down writing assignments on the subject that I prefer to write about while improving my writing and building my own site.

I'm still puzzled about how to make a living working with my passion and love -- cars. I know I'll figure it out eventually... It's just taking longer than I wish it would!

I'm looking forward to an aha! sort of moment, or just an idea that's not as physical of work (So that I too could travel or take time off as I please), but I do have one tiny idea that I keep coming back to... A sign, perhaps?

The best part of looking for my break-through (to me) idea is that I have a loving husband who'll support all those crazy ideas to live life on my own terms, sometimes because he cannot live that way yet. (Military.)

  • For Love or Money: Must It Be One or the Other?   16 years 22 weeks ago

Life can really turn out much different than originally planned and that is not a bad thing. The unexpected experiences may even be beneficial once a person reaches different points along the way where they can stop and access things. Ultimately the more time a person spends enjoying whatever they do the more successful they are.

  • Stock a Natural Food Pantry for Less   16 years 22 weeks ago

    This looks like my pantry.

I've got dozens of food allergies and avoiding preservatives/additives helps. Some ingredients ARE more expensive--like dried blueberries--but you just adjust your meal plan.

Amaranth is also good. It doesn't pack quite as many nutrients as quinoa, but it does contain many essential amino acids.

Who are you and why are you writing about my life??? Haha, seriously you nailed my life spot on.

I planned my life out in college with no idea what I actually wanted and picked accounting because it was "safe"... I also HATE IT so now I'm actually taking steps to reverse course!

  • Stopping the Student-Loan Debt Stress   16 years 22 weeks ago

To Guest with husband's debt, you might look into special programs for teachers, such as discounts for mortgage loans, insurance, etc. and see if your school system will pay for your graduate degree -- in some areas, teachers who work in Title 1 schools receive tuition reimbursements.

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   16 years 22 weeks ago

I just received one of these stupid cards on Friday. I was at first confused because I happen to have a VISA debit card connected to my credit union checking account. But I now know that this is some sort of scam. I don't care how much you people who use this thing like it. I have a perfectly good checking account with a debit card I can use, and I get NO fees or charges unless I have a real problem which I make sure doesn't happen.

I can't help but wonder whether you folks who rave about this company are employees or paid shills.

  • For Love or Money: Must It Be One or the Other?   16 years 22 weeks ago

I will heartily agree that doing what you love doesn't necessarily mean that you love everything about what you're doing. I'm currently doing exactly what I love, after having worked 7 years in finance, excelling at it but secretly yearning for the time where I would be self-employed. Yet, I didn't want to be attached to a geographical location, and I didn't want to have to work 16 hour days forever.

Right now, I'm by no means making millions, but I do think I have found a happy medium. Some days I can afford to take off, some others I have to sit my ass down in front of a computer and work pretty much around the clock. But overall I'm very happy being self-employed and I'm hoping never having to be an employee another day of my life.

There is a price to pay for this, though. I build and maintain websites for a living, and I keep drawing blank stares whenever someone asks me "What do you do for a living" and I tell them. Most of the time, they think I'm an unemployed loser who just doesn't want to say he's not working. The funny thing is that I probably out-earn most of these people, but not having a steady job makes you very cautious about how you spend your money. So I have no bling to show, lol...

Finally, my journey was made easier by the fact that I didn't have to think about a girlfriend nor kids, and could afford to focus on my dream. Not everyone has this luxury. In the end, it's all about choices and specific life circumstances...

  • Stopping the Student-Loan Debt Stress   16 years 22 weeks ago

My husband just incurred 90K on his graduate degree at a private university. I am feeling very stressed over this. I am a teacher and we have had to use loan money to supplement our income and pay for coursework. We bought a house when we came to graduate school, thinking that my salary would cover it-- until we found out our new state took 500 dollars more from my paycheck than my previous state.

Now I need to go to graduate school (public, cheap) so that I can have more job security in the future, but I feel trapped by his debt. We are very much in love, ut the financial issue is wearing me down drastically. How can I dream of going to school now?

We are living above our means-- but what can we do? We can't sell our house and I can't make any more money. We live bare bones- no internet, cable, netflix, eating out.. I don't know what else to cut.

Anyone else been in a similar situation? HELP!!

  • For Love or Money: Must It Be One or the Other?   16 years 22 weeks ago

I've been both many times. I would never go into a full time Business again, I once owned a gas station, and spent more 16 hour days then I cared to, and the feeling of never being able to leave town, etc. I think if you owned a business where it didn't matter if you were open, or not retail, but a service business, where you were the business, not one with reselling of goods.
A Job, when you get 2 weeks vacation, schedualed days off, benefits Your off at 6:00 to put away your work brain, etc. I was relieved to go to a day job after owning my own gas station. I was in heaven.

There is good and bad in everything, and at the end of the day You have to do what is right for you.

  • For Love or Money: Must It Be One or the Other?   16 years 22 weeks ago

For me it is a constant struggle or balancing act. I love what I do, I hate my industry. I'm building my business, I want my free time. I hate sales people, I am a sales person. I don't want to work 80 hrs per week, I need to make money.

I think a lot of people face these dilemmas, maybe even more so with entrepreneurs. In the end I love what I do and I love the freedom it gives me. Then I constantly search to get the other things I want such as more money and to do more traveling. All in due time?

I bank online and use the online budget software... sometimes excel too. I need to be better organized!

  • Should I Take a Job That Pays Less Than Unemployment?   16 years 22 weeks ago

Out of work 3.5 months. Collecting unemployment which will run out early in April, but I think would be extended. I can earn half of the unemployment amount each week without being penalized; of course the net amount would be about 20-23% lower.

Combining the unemployment and a part-time job, I could make it financially. JUST make it. And I continue to pay nearly $400/month for my health insurance.

I have an opportunity for a "nice" job...with a major corporation in a satellite office...just the boss (whom I like upon first meeting and correspondence) and me. It's a nice office, in the suburbs...no parking to pay and no long commute. I'd be able to leave for work at a reasonable hour..not the crack of dawn..and return at a reasonable hour.

I like the job environment. I'd have to learn a lot of software I don't currently know how to use..so I'm learning the job + the software. I've done it before; I'd have to do it again. I'm a bit worried about that since the person who had the job before no longer lives locally and therefore I'm not sure how the training will work out. That makes me nervous..I like to do a good job! Of course, if I take the job and fail...I guess I'd go back on unemployment...right? (and be embarrassed..never haven't learned to do a job and do it really well)

The money would be $10,000.00 less per year than the unemployment + a part time job. Of course once you net out the health insurance, then the unemployment + part time job is about $5,200.00 more. It makes a difference as to my monthly bills. I'd need family help to make it with the job...unless/until there's a raise...or I decide I have to sell my house and move to a cheaper place.

I considered working a second job so I could make it...but the reality is I cannot most likely. I'm age 60. That's important to know. I can probably pass for age 57 (LOL) and not much less than that due to a serious health problem I had a couple of years ago...took a lot out of me and my face isn't what it once was!! LOL...Now please know that the health issue is mainly resolved; it's not chronic but has left me with some residual issues. Nothing horrific but it took a lot out of me when I was very, very ill.

Oh my last job..which I resigned for hostile work environment situation (violent co-worker had abused several staff members...very violent..boss did nothing...I was awarded unemployment on that basis) - paid me $20,000 more per year than this job but I still paid for my own health insurance. That job I came and went as I pleased...was salaried...and worked from home 2 days per week due to my health. Therefore..I'm not sure I can take on a really hard grind of a job 5 days per week...this job I'm looking into, the work situation..the environment...I think would be do-able.

So...what do you think? What would YOU do? Collect unemployment over the winter and start to job hunt again next spring...or take this job? YOU be the judge!

Just typing this out, I think I know what I might do.

    Thank you!
