  • Warning: The Government Mail You Received Might Be a Scam   16 years 23 weeks ago

these people(thieves) everywhere. You would think that once you are off the internet you are free from people who will do absolutely anything to get into your pockets. Something that i have noticed with these scams both online and offline, is that they are very cleverly engineered and executed which means that the scammers are very intelligent people. What i cannot get my head around is why dont these people go get gainful employment because i am sure that any entrepreneur out there would like smart people working for them?? FFT

  • Ask the Readers: Do You Have the Tools? (Chance to win MS Office!)   16 years 23 weeks ago

My wife and I have used mint.com to great success in getting a handle on our finances. Just being aware of how much is coming in and how it's going out really helps and mint.com does a great job of visualizing that information.

    Thanks,
    Hani

  • Can You Afford to Have a Baby?   16 years 23 weeks ago

"Some couples choose to have their baby in a country with high-quality but low-cost care (I personally know of a couple who chose to have their baby in Malaysia for this reason among others. Singapore is also a hotspot for “medical vacations”).

Wow! What a great idea? Perhaps Wise Bread can save money buy hiring writers who live in Malaysia. I am sure the quality would be the same.

  • For Love or Money: Must It Be One or the Other?   16 years 23 weeks ago

"When we do what we love, we don’t mind the sacrifices and compromises we may have to make."

I think the implicit assumption is that there are not other lives impacted by our choices. Are you saying that for you writing is the only dream you have that matters? Do you have any dreams/goal around relationships in your life.

I could work very long hours pursuing my every dream while ignoring my kids, wife and other relationships. When I finally do achieve my goal/dream these people may have moved on, having given up on a the relationship I was too busy to nurture.

If you are already married with kids and suddenly decide to purse a life long dream of travel and writing telling your family "see you later" can be devastating to THEIR lives. Is that selfish?

It would seem to me that making "compromises" (breaking existing commitments) in other areas of personal life so that your dream is fulfilled is no better than compromising the dream.

Just be sure you are ready to deal with the consequences.

  • For Love or Money: Must It Be One or the Other?   16 years 23 weeks ago

Great article! Life is full of shades of gray (or should I say tints of the rainbow?). Any worthwhile goal, like living your dream job or dream life, has to be pursued with patience and fortitude. Success rarely drops into our laps, and even when it comes, it comes with some compromises.

The same analogy can be made with successful investing. It takes some homework, some time, and maybe some sacrifices. Thanks for the interesting thoughts Nora.

  • Dream Job or Day Job?   16 years 23 weeks ago

As someone who has a passion for science and engineering, I thank you for the acknowledgment! After I graduated from college and worked for a couple of years in a mindless technician job, I re-evaluated my career and decided to go to graduate school to earn a doctorate rather than spend 10-15 years in the industry to get the same job that I could get after 5 years in grad school. Now, ten+ years later, my student loans are paid off; I have a house, a flexfuel vehicle, and a hefty retirement account/plan. I do what I was meant to do - solve scientific and technical problems in a research field. I have time (and money!)enough for recreational pursuits. I am content.

What a refreshing idea for a website. You can count me in for the trial.

  • The many uses for empty plastic bottles   16 years 23 weeks ago

This is a a great article and videos of the many uses of bottle storage, thanks for sharing. I think that many people forget that plastic bottles can be used over and over again for storage uses especially.

  • Stock a Natural Food Pantry for Less   16 years 23 weeks ago

Well done, our cupboards look pretty similar. You ever try Quinoa? When I lived in Peru for six months, I had it for breakfast as a drink and for lunch/dinner as a grain with meat. Incredible! Additionally it's the only complete protein source for a grain that I know of (as opposed to brown rice, where you have to eat it with beans). Anyway I digress, keep up the great work!

  • The Debt Trap: Factors That Have Led Us To Our Debt   16 years 23 weeks ago

I disagree with reader's comments that debt starts with a lack of education. Debt starts with selfishness. Plain and simple as that.

It is the attitude of I "deserve" that thing, that I can go in debt now, and "pay" later.

It's all selfishness. Cut most the selfishness, and you can end the problem in your personal life.

I did, and am now debt free. And, yes, I have a college education, and no, I didn't go in debt to do it, and yes, it took me twenty years, but I did it anyway.

People, stop living on the "if come" and for selfishness.

  • 25 Frugal Things I Do, 4 Spendthrift Confessions   16 years 23 weeks ago

I wholeheartedly disagree with this post.
    For two reasons.

First - Eating at a restaurant these days are mostly done frugally. There is no obligation to buy a beverage, especially when water is free. During these recessionary times, people are more frugal but would still like to enjoy their lifestyle.

Secondly - Also - as a former server. Tips are just that. A gratuity on doing a fantastic job through customer service. Tips are earned. They are not a right for the server.

@John - Bcelebrated is almost a timed blog, in that the pages and private messages don't become available until after you're gone.

I agree; it's an interesting concept, and one that is picking up speed too.

How about a timed blog too?

  • Three E-Books to Help You Make Money, Travel, and Change Your Life   16 years 23 weeks ago

Thank you all for the comments!

@Joe - I'm sorry you didn't see value in Matt's book. I find that many e-books are a combination of information you could find elsewhere if you had the time & energy (and propensity towards trial & error) to do so, combined with some form of added value or experience that the author brings to the table. The reader pays to have all the information they need in an easily digestible format, plus the added benefits that have intangible value.

I think that all three authors successfully do that with these books; Matt does so by providing basic travel blogging and SEO tips, and then utilizing his connections with advertisers and expensive subscriptions to collaborate with readers and aspiring travel bloggers.

I hope that you can see some value in the book after looking at it this way, and having spent the money on it. If not, you may want to contact Matt, he's very approachable.

  • The First Step to Budgeting   16 years 23 weeks ago

THanks for the comments about your budgeting systems, people! This is great, because everybody has a different system that works for them. WHat might be easy to me could be excruciating to another person.

I really like the total system Guest above has outlined. It's true: after about 3 months of tracking your expenses, you have a good sense of where your money goes. Throwing in the intangible expenses and organizing what gets paid from where is an excellent way to streamline the process.

Here's another way to budget for those irregular expenses that can throw you off:

In your experience, is it better to have multiple offshore accounts, rather than just a couple of them?
