  • Homebuyer Tax Credit Extended and Expanded   16 years 26 weeks ago

I disagree with Rick. I have been house searching for about 6 months and have not found "the one" just yet. So this extension is great for me - and many others. I realize it's a huge cost to the taxpayers but when people buy houses they buy paint, hire contractors, buy furniture, etc - it's a huge spark to the economy. So I like the move and think it'll help things moving in the right direction.

It seems very silly to be funding this tax credit from borrowed money. To those who can take advantage of it, good luck to them. But to the people who are voting this into law they just need to be voted out of office.

The last one is significant, to remember you're dealing with a real person.

I have always had good success with empathy dealing with telemarketers and collectors. Of course, the best method is to avoid the call altogether. I have been using google voice to send the repeat offenders directly to voicemail. This helps tremendously.

I wrap celery (like Jenny above) and green onions and cucumbers in foil to keep it fresher longer in the refrigerator. Works great.

Telemarketers are really aggravating and most of the time they aren't legit. Very few telemarketing companies aren't scams. This is the 21st century. There are other much more effective and less annoying forms of marketing. ie. Craigslist, brochures, business cards, the list goes on...

In response to the person from India: It is wrong that American companies are exploiting foreign workers. I'm from America and I do not agree with the way that these companies treat foreigners at all. They pay them in pennies to perform difficult tasks. And the thing is, it's not their fault because most people from India have not been educated in the ways of job searching. If there was more education for people in India about being selective about jobs like we are here, this wouldn't be such a huge issue. Indians and other foreigners can get higher pay for their skills and should seek after it. I've seriously considered speaking with someone about setting up some type of online workshop for the purpose of protecting foreigners from exploitation. If we educate them enough, the companies will be forced to stop paying slave wages for services that are valuable.

i don`t know why i felt attracted to this article.. maybe because i`m on a diet and i saw a picture of food. :) anyhow.. the salt thing is relative. take me for example.. i can add as much salt as i want to the soup. and i still think it`s not enough.. but my girlfriend barely eats any salt.

I'm amazed at the number of people who empathize with these callers. I consider them scum and can't help but wonder if their families know what they do for a living. These people need to go out and find a real job that contributes to society. They can go flip burgers, cut grass, shovel snow or nay number of honerable jobs.

  • Secrets of Telemarketing From an Industry Insider   16 years 26 weeks ago

Hi, I have to agree with the above article on all counts..I've worked as a telemarketer and as it's slightly more respectable cousin "market researcher". Rules are the same for both businesses (almost)...you are basically pestering people for info or opinions instead of money, but what I've noticed is that the most sucessful telemarketers or call center employees are usually the biggest jerks in real life. When they get off the phone with someone they've just closed on I've heard them go "what a sucker" or some such thing. Maybe that will help give a perspective on the voice on the other end of the phone. Yes, they're a real person, but that woman with the "little girl" voice or that soft spoken young man might be supporting a family but they also could be supporting an expensive cell phone bill or some frivolous habit you can't afford. So be polite but firm, and yes, they do have to rebut you and yes, you will probably be called back if you hang up. Call centers are merciless when it comes to poor performers. It's all about the money, yours.

I need to provide for myself, my wife, and my son. That does not justify anything that returns money to me.

What about the poor hit-men? They need to eat.

What about the pimps? They have rent to pay.

The mafia members have mouths to feed.

Please stop using that incorrect justification, "I need a job" does not make everything OK.

  • The First Step to Budgeting   16 years 26 weeks ago

In writng down what we actually spend, we realize the stuff that's most important (but not as immediate) often gets shoved aside. So the first poster had a good point. Because "a little leak sinks a big ship", I think Nora's process works for most of us. It's like untangling a ball of thread, you can start at either end. The point is just do it.

  • 3 Cheap and Easy Formulas for Homemade Windshield De-Icer (Plus Bonus Tips)   16 years 26 weeks ago

For the last twenty years, I just filled up a gallon of water in a used milk jug when I get home from work. Let it come to room temp overnight, pour on windshield and set wipers full speed. I keep the gallon container in the car until I get home to save time. I haven't owned a scraper or cracked a windshield (even with chips) all those years up here at the Canadian border... Works for me.

  • The First Step to Budgeting   16 years 26 weeks ago

It works fine to  just pick categories out of thin air--setting them up however seems to make sense to you.  But you can do better than that.

If you've got a working budget, I wouldn't suggest mucking around with your categories for some theoretical gain.  But if you're creating a new budget (or if you're changing around your budget categories for some reason of your own), I've got some suggestions on what makes a good category

excellent article. We could all give a little more empathy to someone who is working!

  • Secrets of Telemarketing From an Industry Insider   16 years 26 weeks ago

I am an Indian and I ALSO hate telemarketers call but I always keep in mind last part of this article. American cry hell out of themselves that India is taking our jobs and are super rude and arrogant to these telemarketers but the fact is american companies want to earn more profits, hence they exploit this population. On the other side, handful of Indians get jobs but what after these jobs, no career whatsoever. Seriously, anyone who hates telemarketers should talk to a real telemarketer to hear how this job is like. Trust me, its not the best job but at the end of the day, they have to bring food to their table too, just like you and me.

  • Secrets of Telemarketing From an Industry Insider   16 years 26 weeks ago

I agree with empathizing with them... they are another person after all. Let's hit it at the source -- it's the company's practice to make the buck first, worry about a relationship with their clients & prospects a very distant second that's creating this.

Point / suggestion #2: "Thank you, but no -- can you please take me off your calling list?" has worked for me 99% of the time. I can only remember once when the answer was *not* a quick, "no problem -- thanks and good night!" :>

  • 15 Wonderful Uses for Witch Hazel   16 years 26 weeks ago

I am a big believer and follower of all-natural products. I spoke with a woman recently regarding my mild adult acne and she had suggested beginning a regimen with a basic natural soap (such as African black soap or as she had recommended, the "Dudu" soap), Witch Hazel (possibly dilute it with 1/4 water), and finish with pure 100% Shea Butter.

The only product I am having difficulty finding is an alcohol-free witch hazel without all the added crap (I tried Thayer's and my face felt 5lbs heavier and sticky). I did see Wild Crops, but I was hoping to find something a little more pocket friendly. Do you have any suggestions? Or do the witch hazels with 14% alcohol generally work ok without overdrying?

I tend to have pretty oily skin so I can't use anything too dry or everything goes into over production, but if I use anything too moisturizing my face feels sticky and gunky. I am trying to find a happy-medium with a more natural regimen.

  • Network Marketing Parties: Opportunity or Emotional Blackmail?   16 years 26 weeks ago

One comment that deserves to be added: Network marketing is like any other profession. Some independent distributors/consultants are delightful, ethical, fun loving, and service oriented. Others are desperate, cagy, grasping, and sly.

If you're lucky enough to have interacted with one of the former, you know that an MLM home presentation can be a wonderful way to spend some time and, yes, maybe some money. If you've run into the latter, you have my sympathy.

But, please, let's not tar everyone in the profession with the same "these are emotional blackmailers" brush!

  • Should You be Ashamed to be on Public Assistance?   16 years 26 weeks ago

While I agree some people need foodstamps and have nothing to be ashamed of, it seems to me that most (and I mean almost all) who get it don't need it. My grandmother was 99 and living on her own and she only qualified for $40 a month in food stamps. I know of able bodied 20 year olds who recieve over $1000 a month! Some of them have kids just to be eligible for more food stamps! And another thing: there should be limits on what you can buy on public assistance. Of course alcohol and tobacco aren't allowed, but steak and gourmet dinners? If you can't buy it yourself you don't deserve it. You should be given just enough to keep you alive. Many people work hard and actually support themselves and can't afford luxuries like steak. I think our flawed "hand-out" system is part of the reason for our flawed economy. As John Smith said- "He that does not work shall not eat." I agree that we must help those that aren't able to help themselves, but the rest of those on food stamps need to toughen up and learn to support themselves. That's a price that comes with freedom and a part of what this country was founded on.
