growth ends when stimulus ends. how we used Keynesian theory is laughable now.it is clearly evident there are independent non-correlation between WAGES and consumptions! This relation isn't a confidence issue! It is the result of more money printing! I'm sorry, but you don't what you talking about.

  • Networking Basics for Regular People   16 years 25 weeks ago

I would have to disagree Jeff - I think these are very solid basics. You may have to pick and choose from the list and you do have to be willing to do some networking and be prepared to stand out from the crowd. Last year I started a new job which I am certain I was able to land not because of my winning personality (I am somewhat quiet & reserved) but because I was organized (kept notes on applications/interviews, followed up with thank-you notes, researched the company prior to interviewing). I don't think networking has to be self-promoting necessarily, but the people around you need to know you are looking - if they don't know, they won't even think of you when they learn of an opening.

Thanks Julie for a great post - I will be passing it along to my son who graduates college in December.

Jobbound's book has some details on making small talk to begin conversations. Most of these ideas, though, can be applied to use online so you don't necessarily have to be an expert conversationlist -- for example, I know someone who sent emails rather than making phone calls to let people know he was looking; he also got names of people to contact for follow-up, which he did. The email trail is also another way to help track conversations.

  • 7 Secret Tips to Make Your London Vacation Cheaper and Easier   16 years 25 weeks ago

    Thanks for the tips.
London is such a classic city of the world yet so easy to get around. I loved living there for a while and always found the public transport great even though the locals often whinged a bit about it.
If you're there in autumn make sure you watch out for 'leaves on the line' which can delay the trains.

  • Save a $100,000 with a Do It Yourself Taste Test   16 years 25 weeks ago

I used to work in the warehousing industry so I know how often companies do this sort of thing. One of the bigger buys is Amy's soup and Trader Joes. I love the Amy's Lentil Soup (which costs about 3.99 in Chicago). If you go to trader Joes and get the Organic Lentil soup cans, its literally the exact same stuff inside, but it only costs 1.99!

Be on the lookout at aldi's too because Trader joes is owned by the same company.

This doesn't sound like basics for regular people -- it sounds like basics for relational "all stars." What about the rest of us who struggle to self-promote or strike up a conversation?

  • Recession Journal VI: It's OVER!!!!!!!!!!!! Any Questions?   16 years 25 weeks ago

This is by far the most discourse I've ever had on any subject I've ever blolumned about. I love it.

First, I'm well aware of the NBER research numbers but the conventional wisdom, at least up until now, is that three consecutive quarters of negative GDP growth, constitute a recession and recessions are measured in retrospect, which is why economists had to look at 2007 quarters to determine the 2008 Recession.

But I did this recession journal series just to illustrate that recession is really just a buzzword and not an accurate depiction of us. Recession has become an excuse for underachievement and also for the vindication of previous irresponsible behavior on the part of business, government and the consumer.

Back to the recession being over, according to Economic jargon it's over. and once the very next quarter shows growth that recessionary period is over.

I'm not saying things don't suck because they do. And if not for the Social Safeguards that FDR put in place such as the FDIC, HUD, Social Security and the securities act of 1933, we might be eating catfood. The artificial o% interest rate from the FED, the cooked books of certain companies and the massive government intervention that saved banks' bacon are all things that if they weren't here it would be close to Thunderdome. But thank God those backstops are here.

Listen people,  Certainly CIT and all of the other key indicators I mentioned above are all factors, to say nothing of our attitudes.

From both a pundintry and personal perspective I'd like to see a wider benchmark to determine downturns and upturns and yes we need to get it together as a country, start working together, get out of Afghanistan and Iraq and start educating our children better, taking care of our elderly and underprivlidged and coming up with some Green initiatives and new manufacturing and service ideas to keep us from becoming Japan in the 90s, Us in the 30s or even worse, Germany in the 20s.

Far too many network events are spoiled by the me, me, me brigade and not enough people these days know how to listen and it's fast becoming an almost obsolete art form.

Learn to listen and a whole new world will open up for you and I guarantee, the people you meet at a network event will definately want to return your calls.

  • How to Save Over $1000 on Your Next Backpacking Trip   16 years 25 weeks ago

Mountain Home food from Amazon for cheaper than they were at REI. Of course they were for our earthquake kit but it's good to know.
I think backpacking is a great vacation idea! Once you have all your gear you can just load up the car and go.

I would say you do need to make sure you have comfortable broken-in boots and a pack that fits well or your trip will be misery.

  • Ask the Readers: Do Gift Cards Make a Good Gift?   16 years 25 weeks ago

They're only good gifts when NOT used as the easy way out.

When you're not sure what specific model/version/etc, they're a good idea. Explain what you wanted to get them and why you didn't just get it and then let them go get the perfect one. (I know you wanted to pick up a copy of Lord of the Rings, but I didn't know if you'd want the director's cut or not.)

When the card is for something they love to do, but you weren't quite sure what they'd want. (Gift certificate to a yarn store for a knitter when you know nothing about yarn)

When the card directly relates to something you do together. (Wii points card for someone you get together and play video games with)

If you can not complete the following sentence, don't get a gift card. "I'm getting (the person) a card to (store) so that he/she can (do this specific thing)."

They always mean more when you explain them with a card too. Like the second example could say, "I always see you knitting things for other people. This is so you can make something for yourself." See? That's really sweet of them.

  • What is Simple Living and Why Should I Care?   16 years 25 weeks ago

    1. You can only simplify if you have room to simplify. About 10 years ago there was a craze for simplifying one's life. Turned out all the people being publicized as having simplified--gone from 2 incomes to 1, so there'd be more time for the kids, less paid in child/house/etc care, moved to smaller houses, etc.--were people who started with a household income in the mid- to high-six figures, and a 3K+ sq ft house. Of course they could afford to simplify--no one needs that much money or that much space unless they've got 8 kids (and even then--my dp's father came from a family of 8 kids, grew up in a house with 1 bathroom, maybe 1500 sq ft--somehow they all survived and thrived).

    2. Not all of us think empty space is desirable. Wilderness is one thing, but a great expanse of nothing in your house is another. Personally, I find the former wonderful, the latter anywhere from just plain boring to absolutely stultifying. There's nothing better than a house crammed full of books and well-loved and used possessions, signifying that people actually _live_ there. This isn't the same as maintaining a house full of things you never use, just for the sake of saying you have them.

    3. Simplicity is in the eye of the individual. What's simple for you isn't necessarily simple for me.

Stop buying the Mountain Home food. Your supermarket has tons of freeze dried meals that are a lot cheaper. Look in the prepared meals isle. I like the Lipton noodles and sauce meals with some canned tuna or chicken. Quick, easy and filling.

  • How to Save Over $1000 on Your Next Backpacking Trip   16 years 25 weeks ago

These are good tips. Another money (and weight-) saving strategy is to parcel out responsibility for different items to different members of the group (how well this works does depend some on the group members). Plan ahead in order to be able to share (e.g.) one tent, one set of cooking gear, etc.

  • Halloween Is Over. Now, Go and Buy Your Costume.   16 years 25 weeks ago

actually, the time to go out was yesterday (at least in Baltimore, this is the case). by the time we got to Walgreens (9:45am), they were wiped out. same situation for Target, and WalMart's stock was quickly filtering out the door. i'm pretty sure all that's left by now is the broken/crap no one else wants.

FYI: most of the party stores do not put any costumes on sale. COSTUME stores might, but we don't have any of those near me.

  • 7 Secret Tips to Make Your London Vacation Cheaper and Easier   16 years 25 weeks ago

As an upfront disclaimer - I live in London.

I don't understand why you say "Most so-called London experts will say go to a supermarket and buy a bottle there. (This is absolute rubbish.)".

If all you really want is a bottle of wine to drink in your room there really is nothing wrong with buying it in a supermarket.
Gerry's on Old Compton Street is a great shop if you are nearby or trying to track down something obscure but hardly worth a trek across town just to get a simple bottle of wine.

The rest of your advice is excellent by the way.

  • How to Save Over $1000 on Your Next Backpacking Trip   16 years 25 weeks ago

We used to camp a lot. Then we had a kid. For 2-3 years our tent mostly got used by other people. Now we get to go camping again (mostly car camping this summer, but we're going backpacking with him next summer I think.

But if you borrow a tent, don't roll it up wet and give it back - make sure it's dry! We lost a tent to mildew because we lent it out to an inexperienced friend.

  • How to Save Over $1000 on Your Next Backpacking Trip   16 years 25 weeks ago

Thanks for the tips Jeff. My son is in Scouts now and we are starting to look at and accumulate gear -- you definitely want to have the right things when you are in the wilderness but that can get expensive. Renting and borrowing are great ways to get started, esp. when you aren't sure how often you'll be taking trips.

  • 7 Secret Tips to Make Your London Vacation Cheaper and Easier   16 years 25 weeks ago

Museums that receive government money in London are FREE (donations accepted) so if the kids want to see the T-Rex at the Museum of Natural History again, you can stop in on your way to the Science Museum to say 'hi'! Little kids will love the V&A Museum of Childhood.
Also, kids ride free on public transportation.
Our family loved Giraffe and Wagamama was also great (cafeteria style seating, kids' menus, crayons)
