  • 7 Secret Tips to Make Your London Vacation Cheaper and Easier   16 years 24 weeks ago

    Our advice:

Do not rent a car in London. Public transportation is great and inexpensive if you know the tricks. Get an oyster card. Look up different transportation options on the net. Jump in straight off and learn how their tube, bus, and train systems work. Ask questions. Everyone will help you. Do not be tempted to board buses without paying although you will see plenty of people do it. The transport police check. Car Park fees and congestion taxes will eat you alive in London.

Lots of B&Bs in London. Try one. Travelodges are reasonably priced and usually adequate. Premier Inn is another chain that are a little more expensive but better overall than Travelodges. Both offer fantastic deals in the off-seasons - 9 pounds 15 pounds/night etc. Try to get a hotel or B&B near a transportation hub like Victoria Station, Marylebone, etc. that offers tubes, trains, and buses. Makes life easier. We usually paid around 5-60 pounds/night for inexpensive hotels and B&Bs.

We got a London Pass and benefited from it although you have to really hustle to do so. It covers most every tourist attraction in London. It also has things in it that most people wouldn't normally go and see, like the canal tours. If castles outside of London are your thing then the British Heritage Pass is a very good deal. We used one for 10 days all over the UK. Most all of the UK's castles, homes, etc are members of the British Heritage system.

Renting a car outside of London is for the adventuresome. The roads in the UK with exception of the motorways which are excellent are very narrow and have nasty little curbs and absolutely no shoulders - terrifying for American drivers. Driving on the 'wrong' side of the road didn't bother me because I took my time making turns and talked to myself about what I was going to do next. Turns are the killers. Road signs in the UK are confusing and far and few between. Forget get about going around a block to get back to where you made a wrong turn - turn around as soon as you can on the road you are on. A GPS is an absolute necessity. If you get lost though, there is a great benefit - you get to meet a lot of friendly and helpful Brits. We met a lot of them.

Walking around in London or any great city is the best way to see it. Take the bus to a main area like Trafalgar Square, Leicester Square, Hyde Park (don't recommend going there) etc., get off and walk. Get in shape before you leave for London by walking at least 2 miles a day. Talk to the locals and visitors. They are great people. Very friendly and full of good information about what to see and do. One of the best pieces of advice we got was from a guy from Morocco on a bus. London is a very diverse city with residents from all over the world.

Most of the touristy stuff we saw is quite entertaining. There are some rip-offs (check out Trip Advisor) but generally you will have a great time.

Good, inexpensive place to eat: carveries. Usually 5 pounds although we did pay 3 pounds a couple of times. Good food in fake pubs although real pubs offer them sometimes.

Be prepared to have one of the best vacations in your life. Only thing better than London is Paris. Ah, Paris.

  • Save a $100,000 with a Do It Yourself Taste Test   16 years 24 weeks ago

Agree with Skippy lovers, ice cream and Kraft Mac & Cheese. I eat Jif if it costs less and do not die so it must be okay. I eat cereal by the truck load. Malt-o-meal cereals, particularly Frosted Mini-Wheats and Raisin-Brand, are very good alternatives. Kroger Corn Flakes and Rasin-Brand are good too. 10-13 cents an ounce is a very good price for cereal. We can get Honey Bunches of Oats at Sams Club for 8 cents an ounce.

We only eat Oscar Meyer cold cuts and hot dogs and Orville Rechingbloker popcorn. Orville's stuff pops up really well in my most excellent Whirlypopper - the best popper ever made. My father-in-law planted some of Orville's one year and we froze big bags of it and used it for over 5 years. Good stuff.

I agree that most commodities are commodities - sugar, flour, milk, salt, spices, vegetable oils etc. We see little difference in canned or bottled vegetables and fruit. Haven't noticed a difference in pasta. There is a difference in bread in my opinion except if you find a good generic brand that is probably made by a major bakery. Someone told me that the color of twist tie tells you when the bread was baked.

Walmart has a really good generic twelve grain bread for $1.85.

The best place for vegetables in our area is Sprouts Farmers Market. You can buy spices by the ounce there too. You probably don't need 4-8 ounces of any spice.

  • Recession Journal VI: It's OVER!!!!!!!!!!!! Any Questions?   16 years 24 weeks ago

A common most BASIC equation used to calculate GDP is as follows:
    GDP=Consumption+Government Expenditures+Investment+(Exports-Imports

Our increase in GDP is Government Expenditure. Please check online for Consumer Consumption changes in the last two years. Also, check if you can FIND a good accurate data for globalization effect for (Exports-Imports). Also, don't forget. America is the mostly a SERVICE industry. We don't count R&D (Human brain assets).

The components used to calculate GDP include:
    Personal Consumption:
-- Durable goods (items expected to last more than three years)
-- Nondurable goods (food and clothing)
    -- Services (sold!)

    Government Expenditures:
    -- Defense (military)
    -- Roads
    -- Schools

    Investment Spending:
-- Nonresidential (spending on plants and equipment), Residential (single-family and multi-family homes)
    -- Business inventories

    Net Exports:
-- Exports are added to GDP
-- Imports are deducted from GDP

California was listed as the 8th largest economy by the CIA World Factbook. When the state is looking at 12%+ unemployment numbers and realistically more under-employed workers, the US in total will have a hard time recovering...when unemployment disappears, then your real world recession will be over.

  • Recession Journal VI: It's OVER!!!!!!!!!!!! Any Questions?   16 years 24 weeks ago

In reality, we are past depression which all economists do not wish to admit. All the signs are here: the unemployment rate is higher than is allowed to be known; giant bailouts for banks; Things clearly are not getting any better. But most people do not want to hear or know about the real state of affairs.

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   16 years 24 weeks ago

After reading numerous postings here, I don't see where Netspend is printing anything more on those cards than is on every other piece of junk mail in your mailbox, or any reason to see them as fradulent and worthy of legal complaints! They're doing nothing more than sending you an offer you can use or not use. Of COURSE they are going to have charges! DUH! That's how they stay in business! Who doesn't have them??? I'd like to thank you all for your postings and this article. After reading it, I've finally figured out a simple way to order things online without giving anyone numbers to accounts that make it difficult or impossible for ME to limit the damage that can be done in the wrong hands to an amount I decide I can deal with, and which keeps me from spending more than I have.
And by the way...I can't help but wonder how many of you went ahead and gave strangers your name and email address, and maybe home page address too, just to post your emotions publicly, right here at this site, without stopping to read and notice that they ask for it...but it isn't required.
Morons. They're everywhere. But the ones who file legal complains are as scary as anyone else out there.

  • Recession Journal VI: It's OVER!!!!!!!!!!!! Any Questions?   16 years 24 weeks ago

It's over? Really? Where are the jobs?
I think it's just another smokescreen. There's more bad times coming.

  • Save a $100,000 with a Do It Yourself Taste Test   16 years 24 weeks ago

There's some stuff we don't buy there - I dont' like their premade frozen food, and we don't buy white bread so we don't buy bread or buns there. But their sauerkraut is good, the canned salmon is the same brand our local big grocery (Cub) sells, but last I checked it was $1 cheaper. Sugar is sugar, baking soda is baking soday, powdered milk is powdered milk.

It's also about the only place we buy cereal - otherwise, we eat toast or oatmeal. But I don't taste the difference for rice puffs, corn squares, or cheerios.

So we go once every couple months and stock up on dry goods for about 1/3 less than the big grocery - and by luck, today they had Lego sets for $5/each less than Target (we actually went to Target and checked, then went back to Aldi and bought - what was $14.99 at Target was $9.99 at Aldi, $34.99 at Target was $29.99 at Aldi for the exact same set.) So that's a chunk of my Christmas list taken care of.

  • Remove Car Dents Quickly and Cheaply   16 years 24 weeks ago

I think you'd all be better served by just hiring a Paintless Repair Technician to do the work in a half hour and call it a day. Many of them will even come to you. These guys can repair small dents, often for less than $100 per dent. Bottom line, you don't have to roll with dents, you don't have to spend a fortune, and like the PDR tech who posted above said, you don't risk doing even further damage to your ride by trying unproven, homegrown methods.

  • How to Survive (and Thrive!) in a Job You Hate   16 years 24 weeks ago

Hi, i've had a pretty hard time at job for the past few months and I just came across your article. Thanks, it helped me realize I am worth more than this job in itself, and to remember the reason why I got it made me realize that it is the best of the bad choices for now.
However, I realized that in a few months, I'll be looking for something else, once my probation period in this company will be finished. I will have the opportunity to choose something I really like this time.
Thanks again you made my day.

  • Barter Explained: Why It's Wise to Barter   16 years 24 weeks ago

I'm living in France right now, and there's a local barter system with a virtual currency that allows you to do one hour of work (anything for anyone) and later get one hour of benefit (again, anything from anyone in the group). People do things like watch each other's children, take care of elderly relatives, fix meals, help with yard work or book-keeping. . . the list is actually quite long.

  • Best Money TIps: How You Can Help the Unemployed Today   16 years 24 weeks ago

I was unemployed for 6 months when I lost my job in January of this year. I still had an internet connection and my laptop so I decided to start a blog detailing my search for work. It started off as some sort of therapy for me but after 5 months I was getting people wanting to pay me to advertise on my blog and I have never looked back.

Being unemployed is the worst feeling in the world but you must never give up and try wherever possible to think outside the box.

  • Recession Journal VI: It's OVER!!!!!!!!!!!! Any Questions?   16 years 24 weeks ago

I think we have been here before....3 months ago, 6 months ago, 9 months ago, etc. It also seems that as soon as you read a post like this that in no time at all there is another article stating that the recession is here to stay. Not for the first time, I'm confused.

  • Recession Journal VI: It's OVER!!!!!!!!!!!! Any Questions?   16 years 24 weeks ago

Bush said 'Mission Accomplished'. Obama said, ' The recession is over'. Sorry, I don't believe either one. I'm still suffering and so are all my friends and family. The biggest employer in my community just laid off more workers and closed the resort lodge for the winter- a first. More businesses are closing. This is just an excuse to raise interest rates and screw over those of us who still have jobs, albeit with cut hours and benefits. Half my neighborhood is foreclosed homes, homes for sale or rent all standing empty. My son's college RAISED tuition in the worst economy since the Great Depression. Yah, the recession is over. If you believe that one, I've got ocean front property in Arizona to sell you.

  • How to Make Moonshine   16 years 24 weeks ago

Well, here it goes. Starting my first batch this morning. Been heating up for about 30min. now and no drops form the coils yet nor any steam. Kinda hard to tell if its boiling or not with the lid on. I know I donn't want to boil it, this is bad I hear. If it blows out steam I will turn down the flame.
I sealed the lid with the bread dough trick I read about in above posts. Copper compression fitting through the lid and 1/4" copper tubing as coils. Useing the fan to cool the coils this time, trying it out. I hear it should take about three hours to still off. Will repost about that time to let you all know how it goes...
