My sister brings her son to Disney at the drop of a hat- and she lives in southeast Pennsylvania. My aunt once went with them and said it was the saddest thing she ever saw- a 7 year old (at the time) jaded over going to Disney World. My brother in law has 3 jobs and my sister works too- and they vacation just about exclusively at Disney World. They have gone 3 or 4 times a year for the past few years-- she just was down for a month from June thru July, first taking a cruise w/ Disney, then spending 3 weeks for the rest of her stay. My kids have yet to go. When they hear their cousin talk about always going, they have their pangs of wishing it was them. I then remind them that they have other things they get to do- going to camp, having a parent home that can let them go to a friend's house anytime (rather than being at a sitter or daycare), etc. We DO go to a local amusement park almost monthly over the summer- but then don't feel so rushed to see and do everything like I know we would at Disney. Besides, our 4 (ages 10, 7, 4, and 2) make travel from home to Florida very cost prohibitive. We imagine Disney will be a twice in their lifetime plan-- once everyone is out of diapers (probably in the next year or two) and then when the youngest is about 9 or 10 (the oldest would be in high school).

My sister uses all kinds of crazy tricks to get meals included, goes the last day of cheap pricing to get the cheap price for the whole trip, etc. She has made it a hobby as to how she finagles her Disney trips. I will likely look for her help when we get more serious about planning for our trips, but in the meantime, we do without. I don't even like to hit the Disney store at the mall with kids- its just too ripe for kids to want "stuff."

We bought trading pins on ebay before going. Disney "cast members" (you may know them as "employees") wear lanyards with pins and will trade with you. This added a fun dimension for my preteens and made standing on line easier, because they were always reviewing their pins and getting excited about what pins they were looking for. I enjoyed chatting with the cast members and finding out where in the world they were from and why they were working at Disney. It added a human touch to the Disney behemoth.

Should be as good as last week (which is when we went and tried out these theories). The 'newer' parking lot at Disneyland would make tailgate parties nearly impossible (enclosed structure).

This was our first year without the stroller! But as long as you can it's a great idea. Our four year old is going on 16 and refuses to use one. We did get her in free when she was 3 1/2 in a stroller.

One more tip: there's a cafe right next to where you exit the lockers (on your left as you're heading to Main Street.) Go there in the morning and get a coffee, and with you receipt, you can come back anytime later (at night is great when it's cooled off a lot) and get a free refill! It's not necessary to bring your cup, either.

My boyfriend and I did this last time we were there a few weeks ago (the woman behind the counter tipped us off). We were skeptical, but we went back later and what do you know? It worked.

    almost forgot:

    5. Bring a stroller even if your kids walk fine on their own. It's great for cargo as well as naps and breaks for the kids. If yopu have a very common stroller hang some ribbon or tag from your suitcase on it so you can easily pick it out in the stroller parking lots.

Being an east coaster I will refer to Disney World.

1.I have found packing snacks, food and drinks as being the most cost saving tactic of all.
My tip in that regard is to back dry drink mixes (crystal light, kool-aid etc.) instead of many bottles. Have a bottle for each person, and refill with free Disney fountain water and your mixes through out the day. This will also save significantly on weight.

2.Stay away from salty snacks. I found chips-ahoy and oreo's satisfied the best without making us thirstier.

3.As for souvenirs, we purchased authentic Disney items at the supermarket outside our hotel room off property. At 1/2 the price we would give each kid one at the end of the day. They were told if they were good they would get the souvenir at the end of the day, and not once did they ask for something while we were there.

4.Lastly, stay at quality off property hotels if you can. You will save significantly.

I used to work at Disney World. I always hated how people that I would never hear from would have the time to call me once I worked at Disney. When I quit, I never heard from them again. I didn't mind so much when they offered a little cash, since I had to drive out there on my day off to sign them in and their pay scale is really low. My favorite saying was when someone said that so and so did them a favor and they would like to return it. Then asked if I could get them into the park for free!!! ok, enough groaning....

Annual passes are often a great deal and usually include perks like free parking. Add up the costs less the perks and see if you are saving some money..... Some savy folds would buy an annual pass every other year and visit in January and December one year. Then skip a year and buy an annual pass the following year. So they would visit 11 and 13 months apart. Admission for the second visit usually worked out to be free.

Things may have changed in the time that I left, but they always put restrictions on the food and drinks that were brought in. However, they would let people take food in for special medical or religious dietary restrictions. Check first.... they may have changed the rules.

You can tailgate picnic to save money. Just don't put the Hibache with hot coals in your trunk when your done. You will come out of the park at the end of the day to find out that you burned up your car and the cars on either side of you. Yes, that actually did happen!

  • How will the federal minimum wage increase affect you?   16 years 36 weeks ago

Urban workers will see little effect, since even fast-food jobs pay better than minimum in the cities.

In small towns, no competition means low wages, and the majority of jobs in many small towns are minimum or near it, especially in the Southeast. Employers are cutting back hours on all employees to compensate for the wage increase. In better times, I'd excoriate them as cheapskate slaveholders, but in a near-depression economy, it's understandable. The domino effect of late rents or doubling up with families, credit defaults, deferred maintenance on autos and human bodies, and uninsured casualties are inevitable consequences which contribute further to the recessionary spiral.

I'm a live-in personal assistant to a disabled man. To me, the minimum wage increase means unemployment within the year, since my boss has decided that the costs of importing an overseas "mail-order bride" are cheaper than my wages.

  • 6 Weird Things People Sell for Cash   16 years 36 weeks ago

Cook them in a pot of any kind of beans, or use them in Mexican soups.
Any long-time flea marketer can tell you that dentures sell. Many a senior citizen has broken their own, taken them for repair or cannot afford repairs, and is willing to sterilize a good secondhand pair.
Back when I had the land for a huge garden, chicken manure was $15 a pickup truck load, and I bought plenty. Cardboard boxes, though, are still free here.

  • Disneyland on the (Sort of) Cheap   16 years 36 weeks ago

While my kids were too young on my last visit, my brother-in-law gave his kids $x per day to spend as they wanted (spend, save, save and buy one big thing at the end of the week).

Also, we plan one meal at a character-themed buffet. Expensive? Yes. But it gives the kids a chance to settle down, rest up, and refresh (especially in the summer). The payoff is they are good for several hours after...rather than having to leave mid-day.

Also, with young kids, get a stroller. They can nap while at the park.

Finally, know when it is time to leave the park. A waste of money if you stay from open to close, but everyone is tired and agitated.

  • Horizon Organic Milk: Is it All Just Lies?   16 years 36 weeks ago

I don't know about you guys, but I don't believe television/news. They tell us what they want us to hear. That's not necessarily the truth. You've given sites to blogs/news articles, but have you gone to a Horizon Farm and seen how it's done around there?

Well if you haven't then how do you know that your information is correct. Maybe everything they say on the label is indeed true and we have a great new milk that's healthy and tasty. (very tasty)

So why don't you take a vacation, go to a Horizon Farm and ask to see how it's done before you make up your mind that Horizon Milk is just a fake alternative to the milk that we digest nowadays, because you might surprise yourself, and I would love to see your blog entry, apologizing to all your readers.

  • Need a Job? Try Searching in China   16 years 36 weeks ago

As a US citizen working overseas, I can tell you that paying double taxes does not apply to everyone. For a US citizen to pay income tax in the states, you must be earning over 80,000 USD abroad. In my case, I am earning less than that so I do not have to pay taxes. And in the case of these US graduates going to China, they won't have to either.

I moved to Australia after working for 6 months in a low paying job on the east coast of America. I get paid double the amount I was getting paid in the States (even with the exchange rate difference) and in Australia they place 20% of your income (on top of your salary) into a retirement fund which you can collect upon leaving the country (if you decide to not become a permanent resident). Taxes are only 30% which is a comparable tax rate to living in a big city on the East Coast of the US. I also received a $5000 refund from the Australian govt since I'm not a permanent resident which is paying for my trip to Europe (and we get 4 weeks vacation starting here).

The US completely screws its graduates and pays them much less than they're worth, placing them in administrative jobs that they didn't need to go to college for. Happy to be an expat at the moment.

    Cheers!

  • Bing Double Savings Days Currently Paying up to 50% Cashback   16 years 36 weeks ago

I usually have a longer-term shopping list of things I would like to buy within the next year or so. Nothing pressing so I only buy them when I find a really good buy. I did find a pair of sneakers that suit me on Eastbay at 50% Bing cash on a pair already discounted $20.00: they would be @ $35.00 total to my door. I'll need to think a bit more on it as I've never paid over $25.00 total for all leather name brand white sneakers, but I've not found any in my local shopping lately either. Nothing else that Bing came up with was any better than usual deals I can find on stuff. Unless the Bing cash back is 50%, it appears that I can routinely beat their deal with a little googling or eBaying. For example, their 12% cash back on a le Creuset pot that is a fair deal @ $275.00, I can get without Bing for $10.00 less & with free shipping. Just like with any coupon, you have to shop the bottom line. As mentioned before, don't buy anything just because of a sale. That is why I like my shopping list of longer-term needs/wants: it helps keep you focused & avoid buying just becuse it's on sale. Occasionally you will find a bargain not on the list that is a must buy, but not often! It really keeps the budget in check. I did find another decent Bing deal on a CD I want, but it was out of stock & I heeded your warning about that potential pitfall. Thanks again for the tips.

  • Free Preview of Refund Cents Website – Extended for Wise Bread Readers ONLY!   16 years 36 weeks ago

The print magazine used to be good, but I let my subscription expire because it just wasn't worth the price. It used to be twice the size it is now. Refunds like in the old days are practically nonexistent. As for the website, you can probably find all those offers on your own.

  • Household Cleaning Hacks That Save You Money   16 years 36 weeks ago

HVAC systems are the biggest users of power in most buildings- around 45% of total. And HVAC systems must be properly sized and maintained regularly to realize desired efficiency results. For example, according to US Dept of Energy website up to 30% energy savings can result from compressor energy alone if coils are cleaned vs. not. In addition this may help with dust control, promote equipment longevity, and improved indoor air quality and comfort. Most manufacturers and US Dept of Energy suggest that you inspect and clean coils and other components as much as annually. Coil cleaning is also important for other systems including coolers, auto radiatiors, refrigerators, de-humidifiers and any other device whose successful operation depends on coils for thermo-dynamic transfer. • Household Cleaning Hacks That Save You Money   16 years 36 weeks ago

Deee-lighted to hear I'm not the only one who uses Simple Green to wash the car. I thought I'd slipped my cog when I dreamed this one up, having run out of whatever supposedly car-friendly product I was using. It really works well.

Also you can clean the hard stuff in the interior very nicely with diluted Murphy's oil soap. Smells great and does a fine job.

  • Details of Obama's mortgage plan released - Will you benefit?   16 years 36 weeks ago

It's really sad to hear all these stories from so many blogs with people close to losing their homes due to our economy.
Everyone seems to be angry for those losing their home being bailed out. Don't be mad with those who lost their jobs or some financial hardship truly happened in their life.

My sister purchased a do-it-yourself loan modification kit online and she is having a great experience. Just thought I'd share and pass it along so everyone can save money during these rough economic times. There's just too many scams out there with these loan modification companies. For any of you who may want to modify your loan like my sister here's the website:

    www.unlawfulmortgageloans.com

Spread the word to any loved ones who my be losing their home because they have no income or have income but are struggling due to a financial or personal hardship.
Hope these rough times are over soon.

  • Bing Double Savings Days Currently Paying up to 50% Cashback   16 years 36 weeks ago

Now I just have to make sure I'm buying something I need. I think too often myself and others find a promotion like this and scramble to buy something to take advantage of it. If instead we didn't spend any money at all, we're saving 100% instead of 50%. It seems simple, but its important. Buying something because its on sale is usually not a good reason by itself to make a purchase.

  • Cashflow: The Board Game That Will Teach You To Be Rich, If You Can Afford It.   16 years 36 weeks ago

Yeap. Millionaire next door uses facts & research, and limits itself. Kiyosaki makes general statements, and is NOT precise. It's a mindset approach that works in seminars as a sales person, but not as someone who'd we'd like to emulate. The research on M. next door seems straight forward, accessible, far less greedy, and most American, available to all people.

The Bus Driver who learns to invest in stocks over 10+ years.

Cashflow quandrant is open in front of me, and I'm eager to learn if the life of Kiyosaki, matches the book. He's clearly is selling a system, with him at the core -- he's an S -- who wants to be a B, by his own lights... I know a few of the various kinds of folks he outlines in the book, and the odd thing is that there's a lot more peace in most of the successful folks I know than in his writing.

I come away from both books, realizing change is possible, but also un-discouraged, because the life style management thing (frugality, etc.) has to be there period to be successful, what ever you do.

Think Madoff and Co. vs. some honest hard-working, and debt free folks you know, who are quiet about their money.

Still, I can see a thread of Greed in K and say, David Bach, etc. but that's different than success cause you do what you love...

    Thoughts?

  • Double Coupons – They Could Cost You!   16 years 36 weeks ago

Yeah, you can probably get some better deals at Wal-Mart than KMart, if you really feel like supporting a company like that. Not that Kmart's products are made in America, because they're not, but they're also not drowning out all the mom-and-pop businesses in most of the rural areas of our country, and when you buy something from Wal-Mart or Sam's Club, you're just another idiot perpetuation our economic downfall into the abyss.

I'm a frugal person and I shop at companies with little business ethics, because that's pretty much all there is left in this day and age, but there's a difference between being a frugal person and being a selfish idiot who looks for the best deal for their own self at the time and not at what it might do to them even in the future or to everyone else/ the economy as a whole, i.e. foreign cars and Wal-Mart, for people who are unashamed to be selfish and will take the "best deal" they can get.

f.y.i. unions were the last good thing we had in our capitalist, free market economy. you think you're screwing over the system but the system is screwing YOU over.

it's all common sense but i thought i'd just throw it out to you.
