I'm torn between "To Hell and Back" about the many money mistakes I've made and how I racked up quite a bit of debt yet worked my way out of it and "Living on the Cheap and Loving It" about my daily life now and all my frugal escapades.
This company is horrible. My 16 y/o daughter was in Apollo Beach Florida and was sent emergency cash to get home to Fort Walton Beach (450 Miles away). The clerk at the Western Union desk inside Winn Dixie offered the money on the NetSpend card. It never worked, my daughter got stranded with no working cell phone 1/3 of the way home in the middle of nowhere. It almost cost her life. This company needs to be locked up. They are crooks. There is no customer service, only automated machines that don't even address anything. Their toll free number doesn't even work in Florida. The web is loaded with case after case. I've written Winn Dixie and told them point blank I'm a longtime customer but I'll never shop there again untill I know they no longer carry this card. That's how strong I feel about it.
Think about it. The only time anyone ever gets money sent Western Union, It's pretty well an emergency. The last thing anyone should ever do is get a Netspend card instead of cash. This almost turned out tragic for this family.
I feel like I am ripping me off since this is already the title of my blog, but it would be The Frugal Lawyer: Former Nobility in the Land of Financial Irresponsibility.
I'd title it, "You're Not The Only One" I would take personal stories from the 2008/2009 and share lessons learned. We all made mistakes (not choosing 'safe' mix of 401k, letting the CCard companies run amok, spending unwisely, etc.) Since a lot of people have hit the bottom (whatever that is for them), I would guess that their pride might prevent them from seeking sensible financial help. No quick fixes, just a little hand-holding and the fact that it will get better.
Believing there ARE honest people in the world, I leave a photo of my business card on my camera as the first image. On the card I’ve written “This camera belongs to” and, if I’m traveling,I add “I can be reached locally at the (hotel); please call my cell if found.”
While I haven’t lost my camera yet, I’ve at least given an honest person the ability to return my camera to me.
If this ever works for you, confirm my faith in people by dropping me a line.
My husband has been in construction for the last 15 years. Construction was good to us for a long, long time. We were even optimistic that our region (E. Texas) would stay afloat--it's been one of the healthier markets. But this summer, business has completely dried up.
We're reorganizing our finances, cutting where we can, and making plans that will ultimately lead to higher and stabler incomes. My husband is looking for another job to get us through the first several months. Next school year, I'll put one of my advanced degrees to work and apply for a higher-paying administrative job (I'm currently a teacher). That will allow my husband to go back to school and focus on getting his nursing degree. We have decided that we're willing to sell our home if necessary. Our only non-negotiable expense is our son's preschool, and it's pretty reasonable.
We're fortunate, though. We've got a decent amount of savings, all of our health insurance is through my employer, we have no credit card debt, and there are several places where we can cut expenses.
For our family, devising a plan and talking very frankly about priorities and realities has helped tremendously.
And zero happens a lot. But then we get the big 20k and then some more zeros and then a 15k...any ideas on how to plan for that?
Up until recently we had a reliable income from one of us. But now that is in jeopardy and we have no idea how to restructure with one wildly variable income.
can get you asked to leave.
you need to use a cell phone or a smallish camera and be surreptitious. walking around noticeable shooting images will get you banned - perhaps even accosted by security
With an eye on Japan in the 1990s. Japan never fell into the depth of a depression but went in and out of extended recessions many times. I see it as a model what will happen to the US.
Taking it easier (on myself), enjoying my family and friends, not focusing too much on the job (from a personal validator, that is) as that can vanish in an instant (it did for me late last year), managing our spending wisely, and pursuing my dreams (as the come to me, though sometimes I wish they'd come allot quicker!).
Life's too short to waste it thinking someone else will make it better for you, or that money will be tipping point, or that an additional material item will make a difference.
Smile and enjoy those around your right now, because, honestly, right now is all you have :-)
Mine will be called: "Adapting to western lifestyle with eastern habits"
This may be cliche ... but I can truly say that I came to America with $700 in my pocket, no credit history, no job - right out of college.
Now after 7 years of living in the country - I have a great score, good job and plenty saved.
I have adapted well to the country and the lifestyle ... but have not forgotten the ways to save, lifehacks learnt from mom/dad and frugal habits.

Prodigal Frugality
With the average rhinoplasty procedure costing roughly $5000, what do you think the chances are that a $7.50 product could do the same job? Exactly.
I totally agree.
Great alternative ways to get rid of pests if you run out of repellent!
Reason No. 11: Online transactions.

I've never tried batch cooking before. Although it sounds fun and convenient, I prefer to "batch prepare" so as to eat fresh.

I guess "bugers" will remain in this article until the Internets are no more.
I was born and raised in the metro area of a big city, by a frugal single mom, and I'm a redhead, hence Urban Squirrel.
It would be about going through life, trying to find ways to make more money and save more money.

Recession recovery may take time, however if we all live well below our means always, it will have a less effect on us. Alas, easier said than done!

My book would be called "Happiness & Money: Finding the Right Balance"
That still sounds to far out there for me..
