I have been following the YMOYL plan for about 5 years, and I will be stepping out of the rat race in 11 weeks at age 40. I feel a little nervous about the transition, but doing this exercise really gives me hope that I can engineer a truly satisfying life. I am reading all your old posts now. They seem to be the words I need to hear to hear right now. Thank you.
Actually, the article isn't misguided at all, you are. I'm sorry you grew up with alcoholism in your family but this article is talking about the direct impact on health (it doesn't take into consideration other impacts). Sugar found in Soda is at least equally harmful to the liver as a shot of tequila or a beer because it has to be processed virtually identically. Truth be told, however, light to moderate drinking has been linked to better health, whereas just two sodas per day has been linked to liver disease after long-term use according to an Israeli study in 09 (just two per day increased liver disease 80%!! Two alcoholic drinks doesn't do that). As a comparative reference, only 20% of chronic alcoholics even get hepatitis or cirrhosis. If you think soda is better than alcoholic beverages for diabetes, heart disease, liver disease and weight, then you are living in a delusion. Ever heard of NASH (non-alcoholic steatohepatitis)? It looks exactly the same by all accounts -- fat buildup in the liver. Alcohol just gets the blame in hepatic or cirrhotic patients whenever someone admits to drinking more than the recommended allowances, even if it isn't close to being the sole cause. That being said, the key is balance. Choose your vices and weigh the risks and be responsible.
I would also include teaching your child how to manage a budget and be financially responsible. It is hard for any 18 year old to wrap their mind around how expensive a college education is, but the more you can do to prepare them, the better.
Great article with nice tips and advice for before, during and after the process. One of my favorite tips is being conscious that the income is taxable and preparing to pay on it.
The easy walk harness saved my life. My last dog pulled so severely that I'd come home with bleeding hands. And several times I slipped on the ice and felt lucky I didn't get a concussion.
There are other front fastening harnesses on the market now that also work well. Although the Easy Walk is wearing out, I don't feel comfortable supporting Pet Safe which also makes shock collars and electric fences. I was a big fan of Premier.
Excellent. But so many first home buyers don't realize how expensive these problems can be. Denial?
I'll never forget one buyer who asked the sellers to pump a foot of water out of the basement so their home inspector could check out the house. I don't need no home inspector to tell me a foot of water in the basement is a big problem.
My favorite gadget at the moment is my new iPod nano. I'm not a huge technology person, but having a great jam list for when I'm running or being able to listen to NPR on my commute makes my day.
Jeff is on point. If you're healthy, avoid the unnecessarily higher premiums from the group plan and seek out private insurance. Every penny counts! Especially if you're younger, you can not only have full control over your policy no matter where you go (let's face it, we younger folks change jobs a lot!) and you will take advantage of your youth and health.
I love the Age 8 suggestions! I take my 8 year old to the library and museums. In fact Iwe take it a step further and have her read those library books to us as we drive to our museum adventures! Great article.
I know so many people who spend so much money on their kids, usually on things that the kids don't really need. I just love your list and will pass it on to family and friends. Kids are expensive and if there is any way to save, I say lets to it!!
If you're older parents, as my wife and I are, there's another reason. I started to save for my two kids' college about 10 years ago and promptly stopped when I realized I will be in or near retirement -- and can tap my IRA instead when they're graduating high school. Thus, we're not reducing their financial aid opportunity, as the author notes.
Our two college funds have grown by about 50% over this past decade, while our IRAs, despite the market collapse a few years ago, are up 200%. This was a slam dunk. And the girls are smart, too!
Having jobs here and there when I was growing up really made me appreciate money and how it takes time and work to get it. I worked all through high school and college and always wondered why my friends complained about being broke!
While living in DC I discovered the Gin Rickey: London Dry Gin, Club Soda, and a lime wedge over ice. I don't like tonic so it's a nice alternative and it's very refreshing. As they say in DC, it's "air conditioning in a glass."
Thanks for the kind words! And good luck!
My absolute favorite is my kindle because I am a big reader and I can always use it to go online also
By far my favorite is the ipad. It has streamlines and organized my life like no other device. I have all but given up on my laptop!
much obliged to the person that posted this I am being interviewed for my first job soon and I am very excited.

Definitely my iPad! Great for keeping up with blogs, email, social media, and reading books and magazines. It's hard to remember life before it.
iTouch. perfect for reading/listening to music anywhere.

I love my laptop and my paper shredder. They are two of the most-used items in my home.

Love the pretend suggestion. Sometimes if I'm feeling directionless or un-capable, I try to "act as if..." Always makes me feel better.
