It’s challenging to find affordable rent AND a reasonable roomie. But there’s a new startup that could make it a whole lot easier, and maybe even solve some bigger problems.
An app called Nesterly is on the cusp of changing the way young people rent, and helping older people stay put in their homes. The startup matches young people with older homeowners who have spare bedrooms. In exchange for cheaper rent, the youthful roomie will help the older homeowner with chores or other tasks.
“For instance, a graduate student might move in with a recent widow and pay just $700 per month instead of the market rate of $1,000. In exchange, the student might walk the homeowner’s dog a few times per week and cook dinner for the two of them on Tuesdays,” Nesterly explains on its website.
Gas guzzling up all your money? Grub gobbling up your entire budget? You’re not the only one.
A new survey from Bankrate finds that, on average, millennials spend $2,300 more per year than other generations on groceries, dining out, gas and cellphone services.
Here are some even more cringe-worthy numbers: Millennials, on average, spend more than $9,500 annually on groceries, around $3,000 on gas and $2,800 at restaurants every year.
You GUYS! Yikes.
One of the few things that can lure urbanites from their air-conditioned apartments into the suffocating summer heat is affordable, delicious food — through the phenomenon known as Restaurant Week.
Don’t be fooled by the name. The event typically lasts longer than a week and is held in many cities during the summer, which is typically a slower time for the restaurant business. Chefs offer deals on fixed-price menus of multiple-course meals in hopes of attracting new, potentially regular customers.
What to expect
New York City Restaurant Week is a semiannual event that offers three courses for a fixed price at hundreds of eateries throughout the city. The event kicks off July 24 and runs through Aug. 18, with lunch menus costing $29 and dinner menus priced at $42.
Feeling financially hungover from Amazon Prime Day? Chug some Gatorade and power up your laptop; another epic sale is about to go down.
Nordstrom’s Anniversary Sale officially kicks off July 21, offering deep discounts on designer brands for two full weeks (it’s a marathon not a sprint, people). Prices go back up on Aug. 7, so snag those deals while you can. Standout brands that are slated to go on sale include J. Crew, Rag & Bone, Topshop, Madewell, Nike and Stuart Weitzman.
Confession: I have a Birchbox subscription (#NotSponsored), and for around $10 a month, it’s the perfect way to treat myself in a controlled way.
And I’m not the only one ballin’ out with boxes. In recent years, a flood of subscription boxes have entered the scene, offering everything from shoes to makeup.
Trying to pick from all those options can be overwhelming. To help you choose from the sea of options, I’ve consulted with savvy subscribers about what they like and don’t like about their boxes.

What you get
Summer is halfway over, and I have the tan lines to prove it.
Unfortunately, no amount of SPF can protect your finances from going up in flames during the sunniest season of the year, but now is the perfect time to cool down those sizzling spending habits.
It’ll be fall before you know it, and you’ll be swapping that rosé for a pumpkin spice latte. There are three major reasons, in the coming months, you’ll wish you had saved more and spent less over the summer.
So, I’m officially challenging you to a summer spending detox, and encourage you to spend money on only the things you need. Here’s a sneak peek on what’s coming up that’s actually worth spending your money on.
1. Back-to-school shopping
I know, I know. It’s basically a crime to talk about school during the summer. Not to be a buzzkill, but pretty soon you’ll be heading back to class with a fresh set of supplies.
