Save Money on Insurance, Why Work With An Independent Insurance Agent?

Oftentimes consumers seek out more affordable rates for their car insurance, home insurance, life insurance, and more. Here are some common questions, “Where is the best place to find better insurance rates? Should you call a 1-800 number? Should you call a “big box” agency? Or should you call a local independent insurance broker?”

Of course, we recommend call a broker! And the reason is simple: they can quote multiple insurance carriers for you at once. This saves you time and more than likely will save you money.

Think about it. If you want to shop your car insurance in Maryland and call a 1-800 number company they will be able to provide you with one quote from one company. If you were to call an independent insurance broker, they will be able to quote multiple companies that are often top national and regional insurance carriers.

5 Reasons to Green Your Cosmetic Packaging – Why Being Eco-friendly is a Must in 2019

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. But when it comes to beauty
packaging, the eyes of the customer can be easily lured into buying a product
with an attractive design, the more instagrammable, the better. But that doesn’t
come without other consequences, and the legacy that beauty packaging leaves
behind is far from pretty. More than 120 billion units of packaging are
produced every year by the global cosmetics industry. By 2050 there will be
more plastic than fish in the sea as well as 12 billion tonnes of plastic in landfills, the equivalent to 35,000
Empire State Buildings.

The Intersection Between Skills and Luck in Your Professional Life (and Elsewhere)

Connie writes in:

Liked your article about competence and mastery. Did you see this piece from MIT Tech Review about luck’s role in all of this? I think it would make a good follow up article.

You’re absolutely right, Connie. That article does address a lot of good points about the role of luck in terms of skill and how they combine to form your income level.

Before I dig into this, a bit of review is in order.

Notre Dame Donations – How Much Has Been Donated So Far?

It has only been a few days since a large fire destroyed much of the world famous Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, but already donations are flooding in from around the world to help pay for repairs to the 850-year-old French landmark. It is thought that upwards of $1 billion has been donated so far from a small number of France’s richest citizens and companies.

One of those donations came from Francois-Henri Pinault, who
is the CEO of Kering. This is a big company that owns some prestigious brands
like Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent. He pledged approximately 100 million euros, which is
around $113 million at current exchange rates. These are eye watering sums of
money, but considering the family is worth in excess of $37 billion, it really
is a drop in the ocean.

5 Fun Things to Do This Summer With My 2.5m Pop Up Gazebo

I love spending time outdoors with Leon and Michelle, who are my 2 adorable children.

However, living in the U.K is normally great but the weather is generally unpredicatable and this is why we bought an Airwave Pop up gazebo (comes with 4 sides as well) so we can be shielded from bad weather if it were to crop up.

We decided to buy the 2.5×2.5m one as we thought as there were 4 of us (including my husband) and wanted plenty of room so we weren’t cramped whilst eating or playing.

What we’re going to use ours for;

Preparing for a Frugal Road Trip

Minh writes in:

My family (husband and two kids) are going on a very long road trip next weekend. We are moving across the country and our stuff will already be unloaded when we arrive with my sister handling the unloading. We are currently staying with a friend and the few possessions we still have (a few changes of clothes and electronics) will fit in two suitcases, so the real work of the move is complete until we arrive.

What I am looking for are some strategies for making this trip as inexpensive as possible. We have nothing at all planned for the trip except arriving in Boston on Sunday.

I’ve done many very long road trips with children over the last few years. There are a lot of little things you can do, both before you depart and during the trip, to make the entire trip tolerable and to save a lot of money.

So, let’s break this down.

What is Property Guardianship and How Does it Work?

In recent
times, property guardianship has risen in popularity. The premise behind this
concept is to take care of a property as a live-in tenant for reduced rent.
This is a win-win situation for both parties because the property would
otherwise remain unoccupied. However, instead of leaving the property empty,
the owner deems it fit to find a “guardian” at a lower cost.

Another
word used for these individuals would be “legal squatters,” and it is
often a great way to find a place to live. To make sure this is official, the
guardian is provided with appropriate licencing for access to the property.
They will also receive a reduced amount to rent that part of the property.
While the owner gets the opportunity to pocket a monthly income while making
sure illegal squatters don’t try living in the property because its unoccupied.

Respawn Halted Development of Another Game to Make Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order

EA is known for pushing developers around and it often has a major role when
it comes to deciding stuff in the development process.

The company has got a lot of heat in recent years for doing this and it
seems that EA has done the same yet again with Respawn. It turns out that
Respawn was actually working on another game when EA asked the developer to
work on Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order instead, as reported by Power Up Gaming.

The game that Respawn was rumored to be working on is Titanfall 3. I know
that the developer announced that Titanfall 3 would not be coming out any time
soon but that could be due to Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order. The game
Director, Stig Asmussen talked about the matter and the following is what he

10 Lessons from My Well-Worn Winter Coat

This past weekend, I put my winter coat away until next November or so. It’s a hardy winter coat, a green Carhartt arctic coat, one that gets me through an Iowa winter where you can have entire weeks where the temperature doesn’t peek above 0 F. I keep a nice spring jacket around that will serve me well for temperatures down in the thirties, but the winter coat is now in “overkill” territory.

I’ve had this coat since 2003. That means this is the seventeenth time I’ve put the coat into storage for the warmer months. It’s a little worn in a few places, but it’s still as sturdy as can be and incredibly warm on a cold winter’s day.

This wonderful winter coat is kind of a living embodiment of a lot of the financial principles I live by.

Seven Ways to Make Sure You Never Pay an ATM Fee Again

Though carrying around cash is increasingly becoming an outdated habit, there are still times in life when a debit card, credit card, or a digital wallet payment simply won’t suffice.

On those occasions when it’s still necessary to withdraw cash from a bank account, whether it’s to tip a service provider or give your child allowance, the last thing you want to do is pay an ATM fee simply to access your own money.

The good news is that there are plenty of ways to avoid these annoying charges, particularly if you plan ahead. We asked banking and personal finance experts from around the country how to avoid wasting another $3 to $6 just to withdraw money.

1. Stay away from out-of-network ATMs.

This should be a no-brainer, but one of the simplest ways to avoid paying a withdrawal fee is to stick to your own bank’s ATMs whenever possible.
