Upstart is a unique online lender that was founded by former Google executives in 2012. As the first lending platform to use artificial intelligence to automate the lending process, the company goes the extra mile to offer loans to a wider range of consumers. Since their inception, Upstart has originated $3.2 billion in loans, 60% of which have been automated.
Where most lenders focus on your FICO score when approving you for a personal loan, uses their advanced technology to look beyond your credit score to quantify risk. Based on their calculations, Upstart believes lenders who use a more intuitive credit model may be able to approve twice as many borrowers without increasing defaults.
Getting your first wallet as a kid is a big
deal. You finally had your own money and needed a way to carry it around. Your
dad had a wallet, your older brother had a wallet, all the adults in your life
had a wallet and now you did too. A wallet was a big deal as a kid, but now
you’re an adult. The way you carry money now shouldn’t just be functional, it
should complement your style too. So it’s time to think about upgrading on the
traditional wallet and getting a billfold or a money clip to carry your money
in style.
The first thing you want to do is not to be
like George Costanza. George, the sloppy, everyman character from the Seinfeld
sitcom had a huge wallet. When he took it out of his pocket it looked like a
football. It had receipts and papers and all sorts of trash in it. It took him
too hands and quite a bit of force to close it! If you have a George Costanza
wallet you need to pair it down for a billfold or money clip.
Renovating and upgrading your kitchen does not need to break the bank,
especially lighting. You can make your kitchen look contemporary yet keep your
expenses for lighting and fixtures to a minimum. Lighting is one of the key elements
of design, and your home décor won’t be complete without some proper lighting
to bring your kitchen alive. From using local electricians to
doing it yourself, the good news is that you can have an affordable plan that
won’t strain you or your budget.
Here are some simple and tips that you can follow to add style to your
kitchen at affordable prices:
Use multiple task fixtures. Try using the layer technique for your
kitchen lighting. These layers, experts say, represent the functions that
lighting performs in the kitchen:
Ambient layer, which looks at the general overhead lighting. It’s just a
basic “wash” of light to illuminate the room.
A dentist appointment is inconvenient enough without wasting a trip there when the appointment has been canceled. Here's when you should suspect something happened to your appointment …
I'm a dental cripple due to poor brushing and flossing habits in my twenties and early thirties. Now, I make sure I take care of my dental work and what's left of my natural teeth.
Part of this regimen is daily brushing and flossing. The other part is regular trips to the dentist. (My last appointment was a good one: no cavities! Yay!)
Just like everything worthwhile, getting out to the dentist takes time. This post talks about not spending any more time than you have to,
Over the last few days, several people asked me for my thoughts on the recent college admissions cheating scandal, where a number of people were charged with various forms of fraud as a result of paying large amounts of money to secure their children’s admission to prestigious universities often through fraudulent means. Many people interpreted this story as an example of people with financial wealth buying opportunities for their children that others do not have, thus ensuring that the wealthy gobble up most of the opportunities and making the path to success harder for less wealthy Americans.
This question from Heather was pretty clear:
Believe it or not, neither the amount of money you earn nor how much you have in the bank or in your wallet has an impact on your credit scores.
Credit scoring models, like FICO and VantageScore, don’t consider your income or other wealth related metrics. This means you have the potential to earn great credit scores whether you earn millions of dollars per year or you earn the minimum wage.
But although income and wealth metrics aren’t factored into your credit scores, a lack of savings can still hurt your credit, albeit indirectly. For example, if you don’t have an emergency fund, you’re putting your financial and credit health at risk.
The
flat season for Ascot begins this year on Wednesday 1st May and in a
bold move the seven-race card day has been renamed the Ascot Trials Day
(formerly Sagaro Stakes Day) giving the meeting a much increased focus leading
into the Royal Ascot meeting in mid-June.
The
Director of Racing and Communications at Ascot had this to say about the
impending event:
“We’re really excited about developing our first flat meeting of the season in to a Royal Ascot Trials Day. This will be a high quality day of racing which will attract current and future stars of the turf and it will be a definite enhancement for horsemen, racegoers, sponsors and partners. There will be huge potential for the day to experience growth in the future and we are especially hopeful that the new Royal Ascot Two-Year old Trial will prove popular ahead of Royal Ascot in June”
Editor's Note: Congratulations to Carmen, Sara, and Chrissy for winning this week's contest!
Life gets busy! When you feel yourself running out of energy, it's OK to take a break and recharge.
If you've spent any amount of time reading money blogs over the past fifteen years, you've heard of the latte factor. In fact, you're probably sick of hearing about it.
This concept — put forth by David Bach in his best-selling The Automatic Millionaire — is based on the idea that daily spending on small things has a big impact on your future wealth.
“We don’t even realize how much we're actually spending on these little purchases,” Bach writes. “If we did think about it and change our habits just a little, we could actually change our destiny.”

Taking out a personal loan to consolidate or pay off mounting debts is not exactly a new development.
However, according to a recent Lending Tree study, it has grown to be the overwhelming reason Americans access personal loans these days. In fact, the study revealed that managing existing debt represented 61% of personal loan requests in 2018. The next closest category was home repairs, at a meager 7.7%. That’s a significant gap.
What’s more, consumers seeking a personal loan to pay off debt requested the highest origination amounts: $14,107 on average for credit card refinancing, and $12,670 for debt consolidation.

“Who was there for your father when he died?” Kim asked me a few moments ago. She's interested in becoming a death doula, so she's reading a book about end-of-life care.
“It's odd you should ask that today,” I said after I told her the story of my father's six-year battle with cancer.
“Why?” she asked.
“Today is the equivalent day in my life as the day when Dad died in his,” I said. “It's ten days until I turn fifty. Dad died ten days before his fiftieth birthday. So, it's a somber day for me. I'll be thinking of him all day.”
Actually, I've been thinking of Dad all week.
Considering
every city, town and village in Spain hosts a
yearly celebration of some kind, 1000 is an obvious gross understatement when
it comes to numbering the amount of actual Spanish Fiestas that are held each
year.
Every single day sees townsfolk somewhere in Spain,
celebrating like there’s no tomorrow, spilling out onto the streets to party as
families, as friends, with their neighbours and with total strangers, all as
part of their local yearly festivities. From new-borns to the oldest members of
their communities the Spanish people embrace a party like no other culture on
earth and the way they party has to be seen and experienced to be believed.
Amanda writes in with one of those good mailbag questions that ends up being its own post because it deserves a longer answer:
How do you handle those days when you just feel bad about yourself and just need a perk or a treat? Like your boss yells at you a bunch and you feel stressed out and burned out and you just go do something that makes you feel good for a little bit? I usually go get something to eat (not the best) or go buy makeup.
Here are the four most common things I do when I’m feeling down in the dumps, I’m alone and don’t have a social contact to connect with, and just want to feel better for a little while.
