5 Unusual Ways to Open a Bottle of Beer (Without a Bottle Opener!)

When I moved my company to our first workspace, my team and I spent a very long day building and installing new equipment. That long day ended up turning into a long night but we finally finished the job around 10 o'clock. To celebrate a job well done, we decided to make it a pizza and beer night. But, of course, being a workshop, we never thought about the fact that there wasn't anything resembling a bottle opener in our space. Fail.

So, learn from our mistakes! Here are five easy ways to open a beer bottle using everyday items (that aren't bottle openers).

1. Using a Single Piece of Paper

An incredibly easy method that involves folding a piece of paper enough times to create a hard enough edge that can create pressure against the bottle top and open it.

You Can Get Coupons for Healthy Foods Too — Here's Where

There's a simple formula for looking and feeling your best: Eat healthy food and occasionally break a sweat. In today's convenience-obsessed culture, both are more difficult than they sound, however. Add in the fact that healthy food usually comes with a significantly higher price tag, and it's no wonder we rely on fast-food and microwave dinners. How to Get Along With Someone You Hate

Let's start out with this fact: Annoying people are inevitable. Work colleagues, neighbors, friends and family — you can't hide from them forever. While you might want to give your boss a huge piece of your mind (and he or she could probably really use it), you need to keep your job!

But here's another fact that you may not want to come to terms with — hate is a destructive feeling, and one that you have complete power over. Think about it for a second. Do you hate this person or do they just bug you a little? Hate, after all, is defined as "an intense loathing for someone or something" and very few people in this world have done anything to deserve that. By hating, you are already making a mountain out of a molehill.

This post comes from Jen Smialek at our partner site Quizzle.com.

We’ve all been there before: You’ve just broken up with your significant other, and you are heartbroken. Regardless of who did the breaking, it’s never easy to muddle through the next weeks/months of confusion and emotion.

When heartbreak strikes, it can be an equally tough time to manage your finances. If you’re currently working through a breakup of your own, here are a few tips to ensure your financial house stays in-tact:

Give Yourself a Break

First of all, realize that you’re going through a tough time and allow yourself to fully process the emotions you’re feeling. Bottling things up will do you no good (and might just make things worse), so take care to afford yourself some grieving time.

Weird Money Facts: 5 True Cases of Unbelievable Inflation

Inflation. It's a simple enough concept to grasp, although the economics behind it can be way more complex. Basically, inflation is a continual increase in the prices of goods and services. What was $1 last year could be $1.07 this year and $1.14 the year after that. This results in decreased buying power for consumers, especially if wages do not keep up with inflation.

Gratitude is good for your soul … and your finances

This article is by staff writer Kristin Wong.

I’ll admit it. When I lost work last year, a tiny sense of entitlement crept up on me.

Okay, maybe it was more than tiny. On the outside, I told people: “I just feel like I deserve a good job, you know?” On the inside, I thought: Why the $%^@ don’t I have a good job? I’m awesome.

My awesomeness, however, is irrelevant. Sometimes these things just happen. They happen to a lot of people, and, despite kind words of encouragement, they don’t necessarily happen for any good reason. It’s funny — when bad things happen to me, I always tell myself that it’s only because something better can happen. It’s like I think I’m immune to obstacles or something. Oh, this can’t possibly be bad. Bad things don’t happen to me, I’m Kristin! It’s probably just something amazing in disguise.

Likability Key to Job Success

Here's a piece from the Wall Street Journal about likability being key to career success. Their thoughts:

"Likability" is becoming a bigger factor for success at work as social networks and videoconferencing grow. The impact goes beyond a high-school popularity contest. The ability to come across as likable is shaping how people are sized up and treated by bosses and co-workers.

Likable people are more apt to be hired, get help at work, get useful information from others and have mistakes forgiven. A study of 133 managers last year by researchers at the University of Massachusetts found that if an auditor is likable and gives a well-organized argument, managers tend to comply with his suggestions, even if they disagree and the auditor lacks supporting evidence.

Why cutting the cord might not work

Time was when you had a home phone and you watched TV with a rabbit-ear antenna. Life was cheap then. Well, almost: I remember paying $3.95 a minute to make a phone call from Orange County to New York. Life may have been cheaper then, but not easier: When you and your significant other got separated in a grocery store, you had to find each other the old-fashioned way.

Then cable television and cell phones were invented. Both were expensive at first, making them the status symbols of the era. Remember how cool that squiggly little antenna was on a car’s rear window? Going to the car wash, you had to unscrew it, and the haves kept them visible on their laps while they waited for their cars. (“Yeah, Sparky, eat your heart out, I have one and you don’t!”)
