Ask the Readers: Are You Wearing a Costume for Halloween This Year?

Editor's Note: Congratulations to Guest, Laura, and Kristin for winning this week's contest!

Wearing costumes is a big part of Halloween — and it can be a big chunk of Halloween spending. While store-bought costumes can be pricey, they're certainly convenient. On the other hand, a DIY costume allows you to exercise your creativity and may not cost a penny to put together.

Are you wearing a costume for Halloween this year? Is it a DIY costume or store-bought? What is the most memorable costume idea you've ever encountered?

Tell us whether you're wearing a costume this Halloween and we'll enter you in a drawing to win a $20 Amazon Gift Card!

We have a Halloween party at work every year and we can compete for prizes. It gets really hard core and there are some amazing costumes. I am definitely dressing up but still trying to figure out the details of my costume. I am trying to use things I have bought over the years so I don't have to spend extra money this year.

I don't wear a Halloween costume, although I'll usually wear a flannel shirt or an orange t-shirt when handing out candy. My husband has a stash of wigs, sunglasses, and makeup that he's bought from the Halloween clearance bins. He chooses from that and raids our son's closet for a shirt to wear with his pants.
The best costume I ever had was one that was done for me by a relative who did work in makeup and costumes. She made me up as Morticia Addams. Every time I saw myself in a mirror that day, I was shocked. Months later while watching a video made from events during that year of college, I realized that it was me in that costume - I really looked like her.

We are re-using some old pieces of costumes to dress up as aliens. It's super easy! And we are repurposing a "monster" costume for our baby into an alien costume! We like doing family costumes and think it's fun to see how people pull off a theme as a group.

I think I am going to put together a homemade Pikachu costume for Halloween. I have seen all kinds of great costumes, but some of the most memorable are the ones that translate an abstract idea into a physical costume.

I am not... But I really enjoy watching the little ones going around the neighborhood.

Going the route of semi home made. Going as Mr Robot / Elliot / Fsociety.
Costume consists of a black hoodie given to me for my birthday, a brown light jacket, with the "Mr Robot" label that I will print off my inkjet, and a baseball cap. I will have a small black backpack with me that I can carry my Fsociety mask that I ordered online (only part thats not "home made")

Even as a very young child in elementary school, we made our own costumes. My children made their own too. Usually, our homemade costumes were the best looking ones and a ton of fun.
