No, I totally agree with you, K. One of my intital criticisms of the project was that it's fairly easy for an upper class Manhattan family with one child to do this. But it's a lot harder if you are struggling to make ends meet, because in a way, you have to undergo a much bigger transformation. It's one thing if one parents gets paid (well) to work from home, and you can afford a maid. It's another if a single parent has to work all day long and really work hard to find time to make dinner.

And the points you raise about people losing jobs are entirely valid. It's definitely something to think long and hard about. As our economy stutters, we might have to consider more localized economies than the one were currently have. And it might cost a lost of jobs - hopefully, it will produce some good jobs as well (maybe more local businesses as places like WalMart become less popular - IF that happens?).

There were quotations around the word "conservative" for a reason - if I had meant an actual conservative, I would't have put quotes around the word. The quotation marks were intended to make the word seem sarcastic.

I was referring to the (old money, East Coast-bred, pearl-wearing, and superficially "conservative") gals who attend women's colleges with the rather outdated view that college is merely a stepping stone along the way to marriage (sort of like a four-year debutante ball - think Mona Lisa Smile). The strange thing is, despite the fact that women's colleges claim to be about empowering women, we had very little access to information about salary negotiation or job searches.

Our "career center" consisted of several three-ring binders that contained photocopied information about a few DC summer internships with legal firms. And this was in 1999!

I am totally in agreement with trying to impact the environment as little as possible. However, I think it's harder for low income people in this country to follow it to the extent that he and his family are doing for this year. It's more expensive to buy food in a market instead of a big chain. Also, does not buying food from more than 250 miles away also mean no oranges or lemons if you don't live near parts of the country that support those fruits? I also wonder about all the people who would lose their jobs (truckers, stockers, etc.) if we all followed this. I'm not saying he's wrong, and I think it's terrible that people say such horrible things to and about someone they have never met. I do feel that this issue is very complex. As a divorced working single mother whose ex belongs to the dead beat dad club, I do worry about the environment, I try to save water, recycle, I tell my children how fortunate we are to have clean water at the turn of a faucet, but there's no way I can do all I want to do, and sometimes other people come off as self righteous. But, maybe I'm just sensitive.

  • Bottled Water, Bottled Hype Part 1   18 years 36 weeks ago

Your concerns about bottled water are really concerns about people
making choices in a (comparatively) free society. You resent people
not following the government program by exercising their freedom of
choice and actually purchasing something in the marketplace.
After all, we don't know what's best for us, although I'm sure you
think you do - after all, you're the elite that has the right to advise and
even dictate the choices we make. In your collectivist mind, bottled water
has such a negative impact on the environment because it is purchased
and consumed, not because of its chemical composition. You would have
us all eating from coconut shells and banana leaves. In my opinion, one
less product or service from the government is one less degree of power
they have over our lives. For that, I'll pay a PREMIUM!

I don't think that there would be any problems with liabilities because:

1 - You are getting their permission to send them emails by getting their address in the first place

2 - You aren't selling the list...just notifying the list of a party at ABC bar and telling them to show up. (your compensation comes as a cut of the door/bar for the people that show, and the bar owner never gets their hands on the list - that's yours and sacred).

Good job though thinking about all the logistics......you never know these days!

...otherwise it wouldn't be limited to new customers only. Even if you unsubscribe to the email list, they now have your home address. It's still a win-win if you don't mind being part of their database, but if you're trying to reduce the amount of bulk mailings you receive, think again.

  • Is Paypal making impulse buyers of us all?   18 years 36 weeks ago

I truly believe that I was "addicted" to Amazon. I must have bought 20 books on Ancient Egypt before I realized they all said the same thing. I could have gotten by with a trip to my local library and not spent a dime . I don't shop on Amazon any more and I go to the library a couple of times a week.

  • How to Erase Your Medical Debt   18 years 36 weeks ago

Once your bill is in collections, the only ways that I'm aware of to get them out of collections is through court (bad, bad option) or by asking the original company to take the accout out of collections.  This last option only works occassionally and depends on the original company and which collection agency purchased your account.  However, even if your account was pulled out of collections,  you might not qualify for medical financial aid.  Remember, most medical financial aid provided by the hospitals is only offered for a certain amount of time after you incurred the bill.   You may be able to use other community resources, as Julie suggested.

  • Frugality: a tactic, but also a goal   18 years 36 weeks ago

For me frugailty is a goal because it is hard to achieve and takes a lot of discipline. I would define a tactic as more of a strategic move with little discipline involved. We may just be arguing symantics.

  • Is Paypal making impulse buyers of us all?   18 years 36 weeks ago

I'm committed to using an all-cash system for spending, but online shopping obviously doesn't fit this model. I use Paypal as my online "envelope"--I transfer the amount I've budgeted for online shopping into my Paypal account each month. I've yet to go over budget, and anything left over is transferred back into my checking account at the end of the month. Thoughtful post--thanks!

  • FREE 18" Cultured Freshwater Pearl Necklace   18 years 36 weeks ago

The offer still works! My coworker and I just ordered them! YAY! Thanks!

  • Is Paypal making impulse buyers of us all?   18 years 36 weeks ago

People are impulsive. Credit card usage in the US is abundantly evident of that. PayPal doesn't make people impulsive, they're just another greedy company that enables people to continue being impulsive.

Control your behaviour and stop with the "I've gotta have that its a good deal!" crap. Control the impulses. Cut up the credit cards and close the PayPal account, and think overnight about any purchase with a price more than $100.

  • Augment Your Income By Going To Nightclubs   18 years 36 weeks ago

There are rules (at least in my country) about what kinds of lists you are allowed to keep. But I suppose a list of names, e-mails and favourite music style wouldn't violate anyones privacy, so it couldn't be illegal. Still. I would check it first.
A great idea, though! Pity I don't enjoy partying.

  • Augment Your Income By Going To Nightclubs   18 years 36 weeks ago

Is there any liability that you as the event planner need to consider? or are you just selling the list of names?

  • Augment Your Income By Going To Nightclubs   18 years 36 weeks ago

Wow! This is a great idea! I live in a college city and this is something that would be a killer idea for networking and such.

I suppose it helps to have some cute female friends working the line as well?

  • On the importance of having capital   18 years 36 weeks ago

Cash is definitely king. It is way more expensive to be broke. I've felt that for a long time. We use our extra cash to do several of the things you suggested, buy bulk, take advantage of sales, and know that if we want to take advantage of our liquid savings interest rate, we can pay off the balance on cards while getting interest for the month beforehand. Having all the cash in advance is a large part of being able to do this. And I definitely agree with you on the point of people crawling out of the woodwork with advice, better investment opportunities, etc. Access to better advice and deals seems to increase in direct relationship with your bank account balance. Wish I'd known that earlier on in life. I might have scrimped a little harder to get where I am sooner.

    As usual Philip, great post!
