I'll second the vote for Locks of Love. My wife donated about 10" of hair to them a couple of summers ago. Really like the idea that the hairpieces go to children who've lost their hair due to illness.
My wife & I also contribute frequently to Children's Miracle Network which was founded in 1983 by Marie Osmond & John Schneider and is an int'l non-profit organization that raises funds for childrens' hospitals & medical research affecting children's health issues.
In fact, Medical Center Hospital where my wife & I both work is hosting its annual Springfest street fair/carnival fundraiser next Friday with 100% of the proceeds going to newborn & pediatric childrens' medical services.
Here in sunny earthquake country, part of the advice we get to prepare for an emergency is to keep the gas tank one quarter to one half full all the time. So, if the big one hits, and the power at the local gas station goes out, we at least have gas to get us out of town to safety, if needed.
I make a lot of soups out of unused tomato sauce, pasta, rice, meats, and veggies. My DH doesn't love the soup as a main course, but if he gets a grilled cheese or quesadilla on the side, he is quite happy. I freeze the rest after a day or so, just b/c we don't want to eat it any more, but we aren't going to throw it away.
I also freeze a lot of stuff I know I don't want to use right away. I bet most stuff would freeze well for a soup that you make later.
It's actually quite easy to make your own pomegranate juice if you have a blender and a strainer. Depending on how much the fruit is in your area, it may be significantly cheaper too. Here's how it works:
1) Get a pomegranate, and peel it into water. You don't have to worry much about separating the white stuff from the seeds because in the water the seeds sink, and the white stuff floats.
2) Skim out the white stuff, and let the juice from the seeds leech into the water. You can keep this mixture for a while.
3) When you want a glass, just dump some in the blender, add sugar as desired, and blend. Strain into a glass.
This way, you also get to control the amount of sugar in the juice (which is usually quite high) as well as how concentrated it is. Just beware that with no preservatives, the blended juice doesn't keep long, so drink it up!
Great advice for all your readers! I am inspired by great articles, like this one, among the english pf blogging community to keep mine going for my "raza" here in the states.
That's how I end up using my batches of peanut sauce. A little bit over brown rice is really good. Broccoli suddenly seems inviting. It's a real life saver, having a tasty staple that you can keep coming back to for many meals.
Have a good vacation Paul. Good post, I like the whole spook factor about these dots. I think I'd go dot crazy with these things, even dotting my favorite pens at work.
Well, I always seem to get screwed for security deposit. I will be 35 in June and it really is about time I get my act toghether. I'm the guy that treats people well, not because I want or need friends, but I treat others how I would treat myself, or my family. So, I moved out of a house on April 1, where I was paying half the rent, or so I though, of $600 per month and my share of utilities, which should have been less than half, because I only had basic cable in my room, where my roommate had the DVR, digital cable, other amenities. I should only have been paying half of basic cable, internet, and phone. So, when I moved in, I told one of my customers about it and since I got beat for $1,200 from the apartment before, he said I better promise to write it down and get a receipt. Well, I did write it down and put it into my Quicken online, but I told him since the person was a friend of mien, he would never try to screw me out of it.
At this point, he is trying to screw me. He says I didn't pay March utilities, but I did. He also tried to hold me stuff because his parents told him he should until I pay him. Well, I moved out before April 1st. Although I had some things in my old bedroom for an additional week, but it was out before April 10th. Though I said I'd go clean the rug and now the kid is saying that if I don't clean it by May 1st, he is going to charge me another month's rent and that he will also charge me for 18 months of storage. My stuff is still in the storage spot, apparently I have to get the police to go there to help me get it back.
It really is sad that so many people are just out for their insecure, selfish selves. This kid (guy at 36 yrs old) had rich parents, whom he treats like crap. Calling his mom a bitch in front of his softball team last summer, almost making her break out in tears. He put holes in the walls at the apartment, slammed doors, cranked up his stereo as loud as he wanted; everything you'd expect from a 14 year old punk in a troubled home. He was going on a ski trip and asked me to install his Ipod Mini for him, which, on his old p.o.s. computer, I had to install windows 2000 and spend at least 5 hours fixing, the day before he left, which I did and I think he made me a sloppy joe to repay me. Another time, his camera was not working, so I spent a bunch of time fixing the computer, updating files, cleaning up old applications, etc. I have my own computer business and have had my LLC since 1998. If I was to do all the work I did for a customer, I would probably have charged at least $300.
Anyway, I initially wanted to comment on how this link :
will show that the landlord (in Conn.) is responsible to pay interest on security deposit, which I found interesting. The sec. dep. I have gotten back in the past, I've never gotten paid the interest, but, apparently it is law. Thinking about it now, though, does anyone have advice for me? This kid says he will take me to court and I told him that it would be in his best interest to realize that I paid him security deposit and stop actually trying to make money off me. He has a teaching certificate, and claims to want to be a teacher, but no place should hire him because he has such a bad temper alone. I would almost feel guilty if he did get a job and ended up hurting one of the children and I had never said anything. Though, other people, uncluding his parents, know he has a real bad temper. He also has some other bad habits, one of which is not a drinking problem, but a similar, party, non-legal issue. I mentioned to him, that if we had to go to court, I'd have to point out that he was overcharging me for utilities. Even for rent, apparently, his parents paid his rent and the money I gave him, was his spending money. I never left my room, the entire house was filled up with his stuff. Not once in 18 months did I sit downstairs on the couch and watch TV. Not that I was too interested in that, but also, he would never have let me. It is all about him, always. I was paying $600 per month, which I was under the impression was half, but I only occupied my bedroom and used the upstairs bathroom as mine, and we both used the shower in my bathroom. Seriously though, when I left, he took stuff out of the bathroom and put it in a box in my old bedroom. I had recently spent about $20 on cleaning supplies, but the ones he put in that box, were empty bottles of stuff. He went as far as to keep the suction cup hooks I used to hang my razor on in the shower and anything else remotely kool, but gave me the empty bottles of crap. Pathetic, really. I mean, he kept the full bottles of cleaner and gave me the empty ones. How lame is that!? Once, I hung a dish towel on the oven handle, and later that night, I found it in the drawer where I kept my towels, crumpled up and still wet. He didn't hang it up to dry or anything, so from that point on, I started eating out again, ordering pizza or grinders. I never once used the oven. Really, I occupied about 20 percent of the place and was paying half (or so I think) of the rent. I'm not sure how much that might hold up in court, but what about utilities. Paying half was overpaying. I didn't have access to digital cable, or the dvr, or HBO, showtime, etc. I only had use of basic cable, internet, and phone, but he charged me for half, from what I know, of all utilities.
Anyway, some advice would be great. We have no written contract; he thinks because his parents are rich and because he has a teaching certificate, that his crap is good to eat and I'm sure he thinks his word is better than mine. He's also called me white trash on a few occasions, as well speaks poorly of me to anyone else he knows. Though, everyone, and I mean everyone that knows him at all, knows that he is a terrible individual. Wish I had known this before I moved in. So, if it boiled down to it, in the community, my word is better than his.
Thanks in advance.. and take it from me, get things in writing no matter how embarassed or odd you might feel. even with friends and family. No matter how much you think it would never happen to you, it can and will.
I'm sorry if my replies yesterday were a *tad* dramatic and overbearing and if I caused any bad vibes here. That wasn't where I was coming from.
Other than that, you might want to check out http://kuchinskas.typepad.com/hug_the_monkey/ and http://www.birthpsychology.com/primalhealth/primal13.html and any other resource for oxytocin - the hormone which is transferred between mother and infant and back again during breastfeeding and is later re-created (or unfortunately not) in other relationships. See also human bonding, relating, normative patternings etc. - virtually hard-wiring the brain and body for love, reciprocity, compassion or as was mentioned - pathology (addictions, disorders, criminal behaviors and others).
Positive behavior ~can~ be learned, healing can be achieved to a very high degree, however transformation of self, communities and world requires the re-wiring - re-prioritizing of our desires - and that can only be achieved via re-membering - re-connecting the severed parts (neurotransmitters and receptors of the 9 components of love - 9 amino acids formed in a chain).
Heavy stuff. But necessary to know that love is our birthright and it's high time it was realized.
I am more than willing to gift my possessions to friends (if they're high end electronics, I'll usually try to sell them on CL or eBay and then use the profits for my upgraded device).
I'm a bit of a minimalist, so I feel like my friends are doing ME a favor by taking things off my hands, that I don't find useful but they will.
Michael Pollan talks a lot about this in his recent book, an Omnivore's Dilemma - or so I've heard. I've read many interviews and listened to him on NPR several times and it sounds like this is a lot of what he talks about with the corn subsidies and such.
I'm still waiting for our local library to get a copy of the book.
All that crap about being emotionally starved is obviously coming from people who have no had the pleasure of dining on Top Ramen for a week. Just a week ago I had enough money for peanut butter & a loaf of bread, luckily I had jelly. Why because I had to save the rest of my money for gas to get to my job.
Hi - My name is Kesav Mohan, and I am the creator of the Ultimate Pricechecker.
We can really use your thoughts and feedback on how to make this tool better. But first: to address privacy concerns:
1. We don't collect your email address to use the toolbar or plug-in, so please don't worry about being added to a mailing list, or receiving third party advertisements from us. If our "terms" or "privacy policy" reflect that, that's something I need to change, since we pretty much used a standard terms and privacy policy for our site :-P.
We rarely use our mailing list anyway, as our readers prefer the RSS route.
2. You should know that we do use Google Analytics to analyze our site. If you've ever used GA, you know it's incredibly comprehensive, and it helps us make our site better (for example, by seeing what people search for, we can tailor our site to their needs).
How you can help us:
1. What can we do to make this better? Here are some starting points:
A. What other sites would you like to be able to search?
B. What other countries would find this useful? We are currently contemplating a Canadian and a UK version.
C. Which do you like better - the search plug-in, or the toolbar?
Isn't that why we all have an email address just for that kind of thing? I have three of them for 'junk', I never give out my important one to anyone but friends and relatives.
I place a high value on my privacy and take strong measures to protect it. Using the search tool or the tool bar puts you on a mailing list at how-to-be-websmart and that will "occasionally" include third-party advertisements. Do as you will, but reading the fine print was enough to make me uninstall before even trying it out.
Errol, why not just buy his book. It's at http://snipurl.com/1ilc1.
