Some cool recipes for and with pomegranate syrup.

When, I was growing up we called pomegranates "Chinese apples." Me & my friends were forbidden to bring them into the house because they can be messy, even to this day I find it more fun to crack one open outside and enjoy the juicy mess.

No, it was bad enough. I look at it now and can't believe I wrote that. Today was my second day at a new job (vitamin and herb shop). Maybe it was pre new job stress? My blog ambitions seem to be in an extended planning stage :) but if/when it gels I'd love for you to take a look at it.

I live in Milwaukee, and there's a surprising amount of sustainable living action going on here. I know, Milwaukee, who knew? There's an active sustainable living yahoo group for the area that helps keep the different interests tied together. Oh, and I should clarify... yes, I lived in a barn, but there were bedrooms built inside. And a bathroom. :)

If you are looking for a very tasty and economical way to get your Pomegranate, I LOVE the Jarrow Formulas Pomegranate Juice Concentrate. It is basically pure pomegranate juice (from the POM Wonderful variety in California)that has had 4 times water removed from it. It is like a pomegranate syrup because it has been concentrated. Nothing else is added to the product and no other processes are involved. I add it to yogurt, smoothies, sparkling water, and use it in recipes. It is amazing. You can find it online at the internet nutrition websites. Just type 'Jarrow Formulas Pomegranate Juice Concentrate' into a search engine and you will find it.

    Ms. Andrea,
you're correct - this site IS about helping people save money. i feel the need to point out the fact that YOU made it about animal rights by inserting a mini-diatribe about POM testing on animals in order to make your argument more convincing.

thanks for the factual information about alternative, less expensive brands. perhaps there are other more appropriate venues for your opinions on animal rights(which, by the way, i largely share.)

    peace,

so, some people have said that the #2 method did not work, but can anyone say that #1 works, i am a clinical pharmacologist, i do understand the scientific reasoning, but can anyone else validate this method, and whats the largest size of dent that this method(s) is viable.

You don't WORK for POM, do you? I'd be really really wary of the "facts" that you can get from their web site.

They do offer 100% pomegranate juice (and that was mentioned in my original article before I edited the hell out of it - thanks for pointing that out), but the cocktails are the ones that concern me - when I buy something like pomegranate blueberry juice, I don't expect to drink pineapple juice.

POM does probably grow all of their pomegranates. The owners of Fiji Water (the Resnicks) ended up with endless pomegranate orchards - I originally read that it was part of another business deal. Faced with tons and tons of rotting pomegranates, which don't fetch enough money on their own, the Resnicks (some say Linda came up with the idea of creating newfound demand for their product by determining that pomegranates are better for you than other fruits. POM Wonderful was born. Owned by Roll International, they have done an amazing job generating demand where there wasn't any before.

I did actually SAY in my article that they quit testing on animals. I'm glad that they responded to customer demands when they heard about the boycott of their product. But my point isn't simply that they tested on animals, but that they used animal testing to justify claims about the health benefits of their product.

Let me put it this way: Would you fully trust "scietific tests" that show that you should have 3 servings of dairy per day, when the tests are paid for by the Dairy Council (nothing against dairy in particular, just an example)? Consider that POM was doing tests to determine if pomegranate juice can help with erectile disfunction.

I was going to type of a rant about the cruelty of testing on rodent penises, but then I started laughing too hard.

This site aims to help people save money. POM is expensive, among its myriad of other sins.

  • Remove Car Dents Quickly and Cheaply   19 years 6 days ago

I checked out this page a few days ago... and today a friend dented her car... so I was rereading the comments to see if anybody would have any comments regarding using the hairdryer before using the can air for #2 (apparently not).

(and after reading the comments, i felt like i had to add the following)

Compressed gas in the can.. when you shake it you can obviously tell its liquid in there, so when your shooting it upside down, you'll be shooting out the liquid.

Since the liquid gas is higher pressure in there, the liquid will upon leaving the can, expand due to the lower pressure outside. From phase diagrams you can tell, dropping pressure in a liquid state would change the liquid to a gas (which btw is a process that absorbes energy. Hence the liquid turning into gas would now be at a lower temperature. And also the expanding gas absorbs more energy, which bring the gas to an even lower temperature. Upon hitting your nice dent in the car, the really cold gas helps to cool the metal. Hence the layer of ice on the car panel. As a side note the "stuff" you see shooting out of the can is condensed water from the air, due to the cold gas. Also note that liquid to gas phase change occurs relatively close to the valve inside the can. And final note, the expanding liquid also absorbs energy from the can, so the can gets colder and colder as you use it more and more. And also nozzle velocity is a function of the difference in temperature between the inside stuff and outside temp (along with pressure, etc.). Hence over continuous usage, the air that comes out.. comes out slower and slower, until you heat the can back up to room temp again (say with your hand) then it'll get back to its original performance.

p.s. Sorry for any bad grammar, grammatically correct sentences isn't exactly my specialty

I loved reading your article about the different pomegranate juices, thanks for doing the research. POM was actually my favorite before I read you post, and then it wasnt, and then it was again :-) whew!

When you said POM Juice wasnt 100% Pomegrante juice, I was confused. I was convinced for the price I was paying it was, so I looked at the bottle, and found it to be 100% pomegrante juice??

I also looked on their website and found that claim to be true I also learned a lot. They grow ALL of the pomegranates used to make the juice! They also claim to be the largest growers of their special pomegrantes (The "Wonderful" variety) in all of north america!! Thats no small peanuts.

Also, I almost threw up in my mouth when you said the research was all done on animals!!!! I thought, I'm done with POM! But I found out through a online medical journal they spent nearly 20 million in medical research - most of which conducted on HUMANS at places like UCLA, Anderson Cancer center, world famous Mayo clinic, Johh Hopkins University. They also have stated to have stopped all vivisection testing, as of last year. They have a bunch of PDF's on the research - none of which was conducted on animals and a great deal of cool health related stuff and best of all...RECIPE'S! I learned more on their site in 25 min then my 1st semester in Medical School @ Loma Linda!

So, my conclusion was...this stuff is what is...100% juice and really-really good for ya -and a lil pricey :-)

Major up-front cash. But if more people did it, the technology would become more widely available, and that would make it a whole lot cheaper. Only a few years ago Hybrid cars were prohibitively expensive.

  • Why is it so expensive to be healthy?   19 years 6 days ago

It's just tragic that the easiest and cheapest food is the worst food for you. Addressing poverty is something that I doubt many wealthy Americans intend to really do.

  • Why is it so expensive to be healthy?   19 years 6 days ago

I just wanted to add that when people have to work their butts off all day to survive (3 jobs, etc.), it's far easier to shove the cheap microwave mac & cheese at the kids and shovel some yourself before collapsing (in front of the boob tube, but that's another article). And then the kids don't learn to cook or prepare fresh food (much less grow it), and there you have a habitual cycle that continues through generations.

Boxed crap = food. What else is there? Flavorless salads for their salt-assaulted palates? Yeah, like they're going to choose that. =P

It takes a paradigm shift and unfortunately, money to realize what you should be eating and to learn to appreciate it and not crave the crap anymore... and to get access to the good stuff.

And the kids who are left to their own devices because the parents are so exhausted from this survival are the ones who do the emotional eating, too.

Poverty is the root of so many of our society's problems. We address it, and we'll see such improvements... It should be our first priority.

  • Why is it so expensive to be healthy?   19 years 6 days ago

I don't think this is purely a lactivist issue here. Does breastfeeding prevent obesity through eating addictions? I was breastfed, and I'm still chubby. Not because of emotional eating, but because back when I was unemployed, I ate a lot of junk food. Junk food and fast food were the cheapest ways to feel satisfied, and they are very addictive because of what they do to your blood sugar (they cause dramatic surges of insulin, which then cause sugar lows, making you crave lots of sugar again).

    That, and I hate exercising.

98% of all addictions, disorders, violence can be traced back to whether or not the bonding experience between mother and baby was loving and consistent or was it a venue for rejection and artificial substitutes for maternal love.

I would love to see where you got this statistic. The idea that something like that could even be proven scientifically would amaze the hell out of me.

  • An energy bill of $0.00   19 years 1 week ago

OK, so your bill is $250.
I eventually found the original article at http://www.csmonitor.com/2007/0315/p12s01-sten.html

" The total cost, $500,000, was paid for in part with a $250,000 grant from the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities. "

So unless you expect to live for 100 more years or are filthy rich you may as well forget it.

It is an emotional outlet for every human being on earth. It is tied into our primal needs, connected to our instinctual hardwiring. It is quite frankly, designed to be our first emotional comfort on earth, but as per governmental/expert *advice* circa 1950-1980, bottles were shoved in the faces of infants born in the West, mothers being told how it was the same as mother's milk and how not to feel guilty about going back to work and leaving the infant in the care of another. 98% of all addictions, disorders, violence can be traced back to whether or not the bonding experience between mother and baby was loving and consistent or was it a venue for rejection and artificial substitutes for maternal love. It is a matter so severe that it extends to virtually every aspect of our current lives and the events which we are witnessing. It is not an eating disorder either way - the fundamental issue is a priority disorder, where $ takes precedence over the welfare of our flesh and blood.

  • Why is it so expensive to be healthy?   19 years 1 week ago

Thank you for your thoughtful comments.

I'm not trying to cover all aspects of obesity in the US. Just one angle. The angle of healthy food being more expensive than cheap food, and the reason for that. That is all. Nothing more.

Anyone, regardless of socioeconomic status, can have emotional problems that lead to unhealthy eating. Rich people also have eating disorders. But they have access to gyms and good doctors, too.

The point is that we often blame poor people for eating crappy food, when in fact, it's simply cheaper to eat really awful food. In a way, they are making an efficient and frugal choice, albeit with terrible consequences.

I don't think that emotional eating alone can explain the obesity epidemic that we face. So much more factors in: our sedentary lifestyles, our instant-gratification culture, the sheer size of our country (which makes is easier to drive around than to walk or ride a bike). The issue is too big to grapple with in a blog. I'm merely touching on one little section.

    WIC

You are also not taking a look at what the government deems appropriate for the most in need- our pregnant poor and the children.

They give out coupons for eggs, peanut butter, american cheese, fruit juices, milk, and cereal.

You would not believe the number of eggs given and the amount of juice.

I have one foster child in my home who qualifies for WIC food stamps-- the number of eggs given for a 2 year old is more than a family of 5 needs/uses. The juice is infinately more than 3 kids need.

I seem to recall article after article in all the papers and ladies magazines about limiting juices to prevent obesity- yet its paid for by the government and thrust upon the "poor". Talk about mixed messages...

  • Why is it so expensive to be healthy?   19 years 1 week ago

What you failed to realize in your commentary is the vital and core fact of why people would choose the very food which are unhealthy. But they serve a very crucial function for so many people today who are starving from a lack of love and nurturing. Food is the last bastion to feed endorphins and dopamine levels in the brain. Food is the mechanism by which populations of the West are feeding their hunger for intimacy, their cravings for fullness and satisfaction. The very people who were deprived of breastmilk as infants - their first meal on earth - who were shoved a cold plastic bottle filled with who knows what - instead of being comforted by the giving, nurturing, enrichment of unconditional love via mother's milk and who are now scarfing down anything to fill the void.

That is the data you lacked in your piece. Please adjust future commentaries accordingly. For the sake of Truth at least.
