  • U.S. Government Offers "Free" $50,000 to Troubled Homeowners   14 years 45 weeks ago

These are the kinds of programs that, over time, bankrupt nations. Simply take a look at Greece and the craziness that overwhelming government entitlements lead to... there is no insurance that we will not find ourselves in a similar boat (and without Germany to bail us out) if we don't wise up. Wow.

  • If You Won The Lottery, You Would...   14 years 45 weeks ago

When i talk about the lottery with friends, the argument often comes up that money can't buy happines. Then the topic turns to "what is happines." everybody usually agrees that having good friends and family is what brings happines. Then i ask, "wouldn't it be nice if we had more time to spend with friends and family?" the unanimous answer is always, "yes!"

So then, if you win the lottery, you could quit your job and spend more time with friends and family. That means that money does buy happines!

Well, what can you do? The politicians want to look like they're doing something to help "main street" so they make programs like these. It is an election year coming up.

I'm very happy that you're against the Bailouts, everyone who pays taxes should have been/should be. My point is that these programs should NOT exist, and taking advantage of them only perpetuates them. THIS ISN"T FREE. It costs a LOT of money for taxpayers aka the people who downsized accordingly so that they could pay their debts/taxes. I wholeheartedly disagree with these programs.

Guest, this is more of an informational article for people who might want to apply. If you read my blogs in the past you'll see that I'm pretty against all the bailouts that happened. Regardless of my opinion, it doesn't change the fact that these programs exist and people should know about them if it so happens to help some family.

  • Baby Carrots: The Frugal Idea That Isn't   14 years 45 weeks ago

I eat a minimum/substantial amount of produce daily, and that often includes carrots. I do not see the point of "baby" carrots, or even pealing whole carrots. All I have to do is rinse off four and throw them in my pocket, and I'm good to go; they're portable, do NOT harbor clumps of grit, don't need a stupid bag, and won't make your fingers sticky with carrot juice. And organic carrots are less likely to have a gamey taste to them. Just stop being pussies and eat the damn vegetables, people!

Also one time I had run out of other produce and just had a giant bag of carrots bigger than my head. By the time I finished it my poo had turned orange.

  • Perfect Peanut Sauce   14 years 45 weeks ago

Love these peanut sauce recipes. I use the Indonesian one and tweak it by adding fish sauce and lime juice for a thai/indo combo sauce it is my favorite. I sometimes make baked fries and dip them in it and pretend I am in Amsterdam eating Dutch fries!

  • U.S. Government Offers "Free" $50,000 to Troubled Homeowners   14 years 45 weeks ago

THIS IS RIDICULOUS! A website that talks about budgets thinks this kind of spending by the gov't is OK?! Buy a house, default on your loans, and get off scott-free? Boy oh boy are we ever living in The Land of Entitlements! The best part is that when the majority of the people live in this entitlement mindset, there is no longer monetary support and the economy will fall, not just falter. Wow. I'm stunned.

  • U.S. Government Offers "Free" $50,000 to Troubled Homeowners   14 years 45 weeks ago

I think that some people just depend on others for a handout. If you are house poor, you obviously shouldn't be able to have a house. I understand that it's your house, and you have kids, etc etc but maybe it would be more financially savvy to cut your losses instead of depending on the government to bail you out.

  • Gigwalk: Get Paid While You Walk!   14 years 45 weeks ago

Wow. And we wonder why America is the fattest country in the world. Paying someone to get you a menu?? And people whine about the economy. Clearly if there's a market to pay someone to get you a menu while you sit on your butt, the economy can't be all that bad.

  • Gigwalk: Get Paid While You Walk!   14 years 45 weeks ago

Cool, social media is finally starting to sound interesting to me. Too bad it is probably going to take ages for a service like this to arrive in Brazil.

  • The Best Eco-Friendly Water Bottles   14 years 45 weeks ago

I LOVE my Klean Kanteen lg. wide-mouth insulated bottle. I tend to only put water in it though because I don't like when my water bottles pick up any taste from another beverage (my coffee mugs are for coffee, and I have one for tea, too).

I used my KK today and filled it with ice. I was outside at the garden for a few hours and I actually had to leave the bottle open so the ice would finally melt - when I left the bottle closed the ice stayed ice for hours.

  • 10 Life and Money Lessons Learned From Immigrant Parents   14 years 45 weeks ago

Cool article. A good reminder that we learn so many of our money habits from our parents and our early childhood. No matter how old we are, taking time to reflect on our our own (parent-infused) money behaviours can enable us to build a much more effective financial plan for our own financial future. Thanks for the article.

We go to things like fun in the park, Popcorn and movies for free at the mall during the summer and I have fun at home with things we already have instead of spending money and we usually have more fun.

  • netSpend: The Story of the Visa Debit Card We Did Not Apply For   14 years 45 weeks ago

I was so pissed off when I received this card! This is the first google search result, and thank you Xin Lu for posting it. I just spent some time on the phone with them, which was an act of congress without activating the card. Every phone step you have to activate your card, and no response leads to disconnect. Press 1 if you do not know your card number, but then you have to put in the card number, but it doesn't activate it, it just goes to a customer service representative. I was able to find out that "cheetah" was the company that provided NetSpend with my personal information. Who the heck is Cheetah??? I will be reporting this as the first comment suggested (the url is wrong, so go to that url but change the last cfm to com). I'm still so pissed off because I have excellent credit. I will be pulling my free annual credit report. They assured me that unless I activate the card nothing goes on my credit. They claim they don't have my social security number. I'm sure everything they told me is a lie!

  • Coupon Coups   14 years 45 weeks ago

@RF $1 Coupon = $1 saved in the piggy bank. I do the same and never use a coupon on things I don't use. Hair color is a good example. Normal price ~$10, with coupons $5. Piggy bank gets $5!

I use Swagbucks as a search engine. Everytime I get $450 in swagbucks (every 6 weeks or so) I convert them into a $5 Gift card for Amazon. As a student, I enrolled in their prime membership for free. This means I can get free 2-day shipping on loads of stuff! At Christmas and birthdays, I buy gifts from Amazon, using my free gift cards, no sales tax, and free shipping!

Sorry, it should be baking soda. Typo on my part!

  • Make-Ahead Food: 10 Things to Cook on a Sunday   14 years 45 weeks ago

I like making a batch of the bread dough from "Artisan Bread in 5 minutes a day". That way I have dough for pizza, rolls, cinnamon rolls, etc. during the week.

I also like making up a big batch of oat waffles at one time; they freeze well and you can take them out and pop them in the toaster for breakfast.

Borscht(beet soup) is also an amazing lunch that I can eat for 2-3 days straight.

Your article mentions baking powder and baking soda.

    Which is it?

  • How to Make Moonshine   14 years 45 weeks ago

Oh dear, what a mess. I have 3 apprentice now, asking how to make and recipes to do. They want to make a still and have me show that, too. Seems they talk about it and have found many, MANY closet distillers as friends. Looks like they should start a support group and meet on Sundays to talk and share. First suggestion I always make? Strong, smooth and macerate fresh peaches or pineapple in it for a couple weeks. Seems going to a public park, there is no drinking. Not good on a hot summer day. Did you know you can bring all the fruit you can eat? Not bad, eh? I figure, if you start with about 150-180 proof of odorless and smooth spirits, macerate fresh pineapple in it for a few weeks, you get some 120-170 proof pineapple. Not to mention the spirits are great tasting! Just don't mix up the pineapple for the grill with the one for consuming, it is a flaming riot! :)

I think I end up using between 1/2 cup to 1 cup of baking soda. It depends on how seriously tarnished the item is, and how much water is in the pot!

  • How to Clean Silver Naturally   14 years 45 weeks ago

Great tip! How much baking soda do you end up using?

For a few other non-abrasive and natural ways to clean your silver, you can try powdered milk, or banana peels. No, seriously!
