Here is some more commentary on the, ah.... business proposition of dubious value.

    DSL

Oh yeah, and at least with our provider (Verizon) and at least a few others, it is possible to get DSL only- "naked DSL".

  • Living Without A Landline   17 years 5 weeks ago

After a few years of being cell-only, we added a land line. Why? Because we had a serious emergency last year and I couldn't find my cell phone fast enough. We don't use our cells that much (or landline, really) and dont' keep them on our body at all times, plus have them on vibrate, so we kept missing lots of calls and losing track of where the phone was.

Mainly we got the landline for peace of mind, and we had figured that eventually we would add it back once we had kids anyways. It was nice to save the money for a few years, but you do what you need to do.

I think some people keep their landlines for security reasons-like having an home security/emergency service. For those of you considering the cell-phone only option and who have a security system or are thinking of it, I found out that at least ADT offers a non-landline option using cell technology. Something to think about, for sure.

  • Do You Have Your TV Converter Box Yet?   17 years 5 weeks ago

Try PBS.  They should have at least 2 channels in your area, and they are filled with kids programming during the hours of 8am - about 5 pm.

Take it from a Canadian/American dual citizen who has travelled all over - other countries in general are more frugal than us. I remember seeing recyclers in Hong Kong selling their wares at a flea market, Egyptians are the ultimate in hagling and making a deal, Mexicans seem to have a wonderful ability to make wonderful meals on a small budget, a Turkish man bartering for lipstick for his many wives, Jamaicans who always see a business opportunity in every transaction.

We could definitely learn a thing or two...

I refuse to buy things to help me save money (for instance coupon organizer) and will make do with my own homemade version (old checkbook cover). I will conciously make do with less (using 1/2 a dryer sheet equals no difference in your laundry). I try to live by this everyday. When I do have to buy things my money spent represents a thoughtful value based purchase. Great ideas others here as well.

  • How to Make Moonshine   17 years 5 weeks ago

The point is that the (mostly alcohol) steam comes out through the hole.  As long as that happens, you shouldn't have pressure building up inside.  (If the hole gets blocked you would have pressure building up and that would be bad.  Make sure that doesn't happen.)

If you leave the lid ajar, though, you'll lose a large fraction of your alcohol, which will just escape into the room around the edges of the lid.

I think I can conveniently obtain a pressure cooker from the local Methodist resale shop (IF I don't tell them what it is for!) but I am not sure if I should run it in the "sealed" position or not. You said that all you need is a pot with a hole in the lid... but does the lid need to lock? That adds a risk of explosion... Can I leave the lid ajar?

    Thanks!

Do you have a 5 year loan with quarterly payments on a principal of $750,000? How many payments have you made to date?

  • Living Without A Landline   17 years 5 weeks ago

My understanding is that you need a phone line to get DSL. You can check with your Internet provider/telephone company but I am guessing that even if you decided to get DSL as a standalone service rather than a bundled package (phone plus Internet), then you may not save a lot (which is why I estimated the landline savings at about $20).

There really are a lot of ways to get telecom and even though you can save on one part of the service (that is a regular phone for example) you may get end paying more for another part (Internet connectivity). Still, it might be worth it to look at different options. .

  • Living Without A Landline   17 years 5 weeks ago

Sorry to be dense, but what if you connect to the internet through your phone company? Can you disconnect your phone service but keep the DSL? I would give up my landline in a minute, and port that long-time number over to my cell phone's family-talk plan if possible, especially if it would save some $$.....

  • Living Without A Landline   17 years 5 weeks ago

Yeah, I only use my cell phone. There's no point in having a landline. Even if I did I'd prefer a computer phone and use skype. With skype it's like $7 for 3 months or something like that for unlimited local and united states phone calls.

a quick update from ePassportPhoto... we just blogged on the latest from our communication with Walgreens. Believe it or not, these Walgreens allow themselves to censor the content of your photo - do you think this is legal?

This would be so inspiring if true, but it appears to be a scheme. Do check out www.nancyrichards.org for more information. The general principles mentioned in the article, though, may lead to some success--if not incredible riches.

  • Modifiers: 5 things that change an item's final price   17 years 5 weeks ago

Payment methods often have effect on price. We've all heard the sticker price vs. the cash price. In fact, if there isn't a cash/debit savings - and it's an option - absolutely ensure you use credit. As noted here:

  • Laid Off? You May Have to Fight for Unemployment Benefits   17 years 5 weeks ago

From an employer's perspective, it really sucks when you let someone know you're going to have to lay them off about a month beforehand (because you've lost clients, and you want to let them know in order to give them time to find another job) and they begin taking advantage of you. Please be courteous and don't do things like undermine the current leadership, bad-mouth the owners to other companies, take advantage of the courtesy extended you by using company time and resources to do things that are a direct conflict of interest...etc, etc.

We didn't win our contest of unemployment benefits even though the person was going to be laid off, but then was fired a week early for all kinds of things that would have gotten them fired in the course of a normal employment situation.

I guess I'm just trying to point out that from the other perspective, sometimes it's justified to contest the benefits, and to encourage those people being laid off to treat their employers with respect too. (Especially for small businesses, laying people off is not an easy decision!)

This is complete misinformation that is probably part of a marketing campaign. parrotsecrets.com is owned by Sumantra Roy, not some 18 year old kid. Roy is a well known "internet marketer" (aka spammer) who heads of dozens of these types of scam sites.

  • Modifiers: 5 things that change an item's final price   17 years 6 weeks ago

Great points, Torley (and Marcus). The only thing that I can think of adding, and it's really tangential, is to figure out when something is marked down fully. I used to shop at Target a lot, and I remember reading on Consumerist a couple of years ago that when something is marked down to "$X.88", you know that that is the final mark-down price.

Only applies to Target, and lots of their stuff is crap.
