Love my kids and loved the post. All kids are brats once in awhile, doesn't mean we don't love them any less and there is no denying the expense of raising a family! Some great links to articles in this list too, thanks for sharing.
I haven't had a landline in over 5 years. I've never missed it.
I may be remembering this incorrectly, but I believe I used my cell to call 911 approx 7 years ago and didn't have a problem. I just had to tell them where I was.
On the contrary to the poster above, I found this post to be very informative. We still have and use our landline. Our cell phone doesn't work in our house - we have to go outside to use it.
We got rid of our long distance service years ago and use a calling card for that.
I think there are some people who wonder what would happen if they got rid of their landline and replaced it with their cell phone. I know I have.
Good information. Thanks Julie.
I am definitely a late adopter and I suspect that there are at least a few others out there like me. So I hope someone found the humor and slight irony that someone who grew up with one telecom company (Ma Bell) and a rotary dial phone is finally using Skype.
My friend recently told me that theives look for the marks on windshields that are left by GPS, radar detectors, etc. They are the little round marks that the suction cups leave..
If they see that, they are pretty sure there is a GPS or radar detector hidden in the car. I guess you should just throw it in your purse or briefcase to be safe!
The scammers and rip-offs will ALWAYS find ways to take items which do not belong to them.. sad.
With all due respect, this has been one of the more disappointing posts from this website. This post would've been revolutionary maybe 3-4 years ago but now? It just seems silly.
I had al ways considered dropping the landline because in my area, the cheapest we can get it (with no bells and whistles or long distance) is about $40 per month. I hesitated because I have two small children and I wanted to know I could always call 911 if something happened, and I was afraid a cell phone wouldn't be reliable enough.
When I moved to a new place at the start of this school year, I decided not to have the landline phone turned on. I have a very affordable cell phone service that includes unlimited calling to all others using the same provider (and lucky for me, almost everyone I know uses them!) and even unlimited texting to any cell phone for the same monthly fee. I have never once had a problem with reliability in the area I live in, or anyplace I've traveled to so far. My service has always been able to find a signal.
Now I look back and wish I had made the transition a long time ago, and saved myself the unnecessary expense of the landline.
I have both Skype and MagicJack on my computer for making and receiving international calls - and while they're not quite as crystal clear as they advertise (all the time, anyway) I have found them to be very convenient, inexpensive and sometimes free, and "works-good-enough".
My wife and I haven't had a land line in years. Never missed the thing. If anything it's been really nice. No more missed important calls because we weren't home. People don't have to try different numbers to get a hold of us. And I get a 30% discount on our cell phones through work. :^)
I have been living without a landline all 3 years I've been in college. My parents finally got rid of theirs last year. I don't know what snafus they have run into, but if I'm pretty sure it's been easy for them, as it has been for me. We each have a cell phone on a single family plan, plus my Dad was given a cell to use in Canada on business trips by his company since he is there so often.
I will admit that finding the phone is definitely annoying at times! But as a cheap college student, it's not nearly annoying enough for me to pay a monthly fee for a landline :)
Just thought I'd remind the commenters who say they use credit cards so they can reserve flights, rent cars, etc - that most of the time you can do the same with your bank debit card. Most bank debit cards work like credit cards when it comes to wanting to reserve your travel arrangements or pay for things you can't with cash. To the retailer, they're receiving a credit card payment, but for the consumer, they're still on a cash-only budget.
I love the idea of cash back credit cards, but for me, I know I would also be very tempted to carry a balance if money got tight once in awhile, and prefer to work out a cash-only system, too. Thanks for the tips!
I have had the same problem as your grandparents. We set up our box in January 2009. I could not belive how many channels we had, it was like getting cable for free! We had all the major channels except a couple, but I figured that would straighten out once the February conversion occurred. But then my kids started noticing we were losing channels. I swapped that box for the other one we had (for our other TV). It made no difference. Now we are down to essentially one station which occassionally changes, and about 11 pm every night we seems to be able to pick up another one or two channels. I was ready to get a new anntenae, but my son indicated one of his friends who lives even further out from the City, in the same direction from the broadcasting locations, gets great reception with just rabbits ears.
I don't know if the stations made changes in thier broadcasting that effected my reception, but I am hesistant to go through the cost and trouble to buy a new anntenae and install it on my roof if I am not assured it is going to make a difference...
I like the links and information, but I agree - this article would have been much better without the sarcasm. Kids cost money, but that doesn't make them brats or a burden.
I think you still come out ahead using Zenni Optical for kids' eyewear. For our little guy, none of the brick & mortar eyeglass shops locally had anything small enough for a 2 year old.
I agree with your comment, it helps nobody that has done things right.
I just tried to modify my loan and within 12 days I was denied. I have fallen on some tough times with pay cuts in the auto industry, loss of child support because of job losses on the other end, doctors bills, a new roof and other factors that have put my monthly output higher than my income right now, however I can't refinance my house because I don't have enough debt. I believe they expect that I drain my 401k to pay for my house.
This plan is a joke for those that have done all the right things.

I CAN'T BELIEVE SOME OF THE COMMENTS POSTED HERE AND THE LACK OF COMPASSION WE HAVE FOR EACH OTHER. DID YOU EVER THINK ABOUT THE ONE THAT WILL BENEFIT GREATLY FROM THIS PLAN? I HAD GREAT CREDIT, BOUGHT A HOUSE I COULD AFFORD BUT LIFE HAPPENS. IN 2005, MY HOUSE WAS DAMAGED BY HURRICANE KATRINA. IN 2007, I WAS FIRED FOR POOR WORK PERFORMANCE DUE TO THE FACT IN 2008, I WAS FACED WITH A BRAIN TUMOR. NOT TO MENTION IN 2009, ITS FILLED WITH ALL KIND OF GREAT THINGS LIKE RADIATION, ENDLESS DOCTOR APPOINTMENTS AND STILL NOT HAVING THE ABILITY TO WORK FULL-TIME ANYMORE BECAUSE I HAVE MEMORY LOSS, ETC.....
WILL THIS HELP ME? YES,IT WILL. WILL IT HELP OTHERS OUT THERE JUST LIKE ME? I PRAY IT DOES!
For my assignment i want to choose skocks as a good investement could u please give some good points about stocks and what type of stocks eg. natural reserouse what eles...... enough to write a good essay please.
Question is as follow:
You have recently inherited $25,000 from your Grandmother. You plan to buy a house or condominium some time within 10 years of graduating from Humber. Using only the financial assets we studied in ECON004, design and present and investment strategy/plan to accumulate a big enough down payment to acquire the property.
At my local annual kids' consignment sale. My kids (and some friends' kids I bought for) look like I have a credit card problem AND I have a new double jogging stroller, all for less than $150.

Wife and I in our 6th year of laughing at people who still paid money for a land line so they could call their cell to find it.

Thanks for the info with the humor. I let my kids read the article, they weren't offended. There are times they feel the same way about us.
Great post, Tisha.

For the clarification. I got caught up in the local minimum; last explanation was helpful.

Nice post-- kids ain't cheap!
Although, ours are old enough to be put to work! Plenty to do on the Frugal Homestead, and I appreciate the help!
We will also be hiking this weekend, a nice frigal activity with the kids.

This round up made me laugh... glad I don't have kids yet.

"Wallet-draining little brats"?!
I'm not sure if you're trying to be funny, but I found this to be extremely offensive.
