  • Don't Go to College to Learn   15 years 39 weeks ago

To get as much value out of the college experience as you can, you have to be take it upon yourself to be productive. You need to take what you learned in the classroom, and learn more about these topics outside of class. You need to meet as many interesting people as you can while in college. Networking is definitely key. You also have to get involved. There are so many resources available on campus (speeches, clubs, groups, scholarships, awards, etc) outside of class. If you are not taking advantage of these, you are wasting you money. As an undergrad at Syracuse University, I started a business and was able to get tons of resources from the school and was able to join an entrepreneurial community. for this reason, I decided to continue my education by pursuing my M.S. at the SU School of Information Studies.

Someone to teach me how to plant a vegetable garden that will actually grow and produce food.

  • Canned vs. Dried Beans: Which Are Cheaper?   15 years 39 weeks ago

Very good points Beth! 1 can of beans has almost your total sodium rda! And I am surprised the BPA lining of can was not mentioned in this article :(
I have nothing in my pantry that is in a metal can.
Canned food from a factory has a bunch of unknown CRAP in it-roddent & insect contaminants etc.
I will take a bit of time to cook beans myself :)

I need an expandable coupon holder with dividers - saw one at CVS & hope I get it!

Around holidays you have much more coupons and offers to tote around to not miss a chance to save money.

    Thank you...

Canned beans also have a high (unhealthy/hidden) sodium content. Most get enough sodium in their diets already.

Avoid canned vegetables. Go frozen/dried if you can't get fresh.

My brother works in composition and printing, would love if he would do a family photo album from his picture collection.

I would love this not only for myself, but for my siblings and mother, whom I am sure would enjoy it very much.

  • Canned vs. Dried Beans: Which Are Cheaper?   15 years 39 weeks ago

I would have to agree. I get ambitious sometimes and make a pot of beans and ham....I enjoy one bowl and then I want nothing to do with the beans because I'm not a huge fan of beans, but I know beans are healthy and if I have a variety of canned beans I'll use them in many dishes.

  • 6 Festive, Frugal Ways to Spruce Up Your Home for the Holidays   15 years 39 weeks ago

I like the line about the accessories. This really reminded me of my Grandmother, but she enjoys going all out. I think she's just accumulated things over the years. Each year a new dancing Santa or ticklish elf will catch her attention and she just has to have it. I do mind when she starts getting us these things as well. I've sent I don't know how many knick-knacks, festive stuffed animals, decorative dishes, and holiday clothing to goodwill. Why on earth would I want a Santa cookie jar? I'd have to find a place to store it 11 months out of the year and our apartment is tiny! I prefer natural and homemade decorations anyway. I like this opportunity to get creative and project with my husband.

  • I Just Think Things Should Work Properly too, Mr. Dyson. UPDATED 7/7/09   15 years 39 weeks ago

lol, That is so wrong, but come to think of it - I've been so royally screwed over by Dyson and the lemon they sold me for nearly $600, I'm so tempted to use that criminal idea! lol - Target would RTV it for vendor credit, no??

Your articles are going to get me in trouble! :)

  • Canned vs. Dried Beans: Which Are Cheaper?   15 years 39 weeks ago

This fails to the consider the cost of my time in cooking the beans myself, the water and energy used in the cooking process, and the value found through the consistency in canned beans. I cannot comment on the recycling process for alumninum cans vs. plastic bags that held beans. For me, I use fewer than 3 cans/wk and can assure you that the value of my time alone is more than enough to offset paying more for the canned beans.

I used to be wary of home remedies, having been raised as an American child of the cough syrup generation. I grew up on Robitussin and Dimetapp. But as an adult, educating myself about health became a priority. Now, at the first sign of a runny nose or itchy throat, I eat a spoonful of minced garlic, chase it with honey and ginger tea, and employ nasal irrigation. The cold is usually gone by the next day.

I'd so appreciate a knitter to give me free lessons, a skein of yarn, and a pair of knitting needles. I already quilt and crochet but never grasped knitting. I'd love another craft skill!

  • Canned vs. Dried Beans: Which Are Cheaper?   15 years 39 weeks ago

i agree on the dubious carbon footprint savings (since aluminum is eminently recyclable, and dried beans generally come in plastic bags) and the unmentioned energy costs of using a stove (electric, gas, or otherwise) for an hour of cooking time. then you also need to store the cooked beans in a refrigerator or freezer (which, admittedly, may make a freezer more efficient by helping to keep it full).

additionally, i'd argue that canned beans may be more nutritious for one odd reason: i use them. dried beans have literally been hanging out in my pantry for ages. but last night, as i made up a light vegetarian gravy, i tossed in a can of navy beans for extra protein. when i'm making a quick veggie pasta, again, i'll think, why not some black beans or kidney beans? and in they go. the convenience factor makes me eat more of them and aids in my nutrition. the sodium question is a real one, but given how i normally salt my food, canned beans are, essentially, the least of my worries ;)

These are great tips. I also saw useful and really funny stuff on www.freestuffin.com

  • Healthy, frugal eating   15 years 39 weeks ago

I like this article. It's frank and honest. That's my motto in life with everything, from food to life outlook: Keep it simple. All this other stuff, including preservatives and pesticides, push it aside. With processed foods, you may be trading convenience for poison. Learn how to cook using basic techniques, nothing fancy is necessary. Spices (which are cheap at places like Big Lots and Aldi's) make any simple meal a flavorful masterpiece. A little goes alot, and many spices contain abundant antioxidants, an easy tasteful boost to your health. Eat leftovers and buy a good quality slow cooker; they are cheap and an amazing kitchen appliance. You can find all kinds of cheap-to-nothing crock-pot cookbooks at your local bookstore. Use it, it's easy and you'll never look back!

  • Best Money Tips: Living on One Income   15 years 39 weeks ago

We took the decision to live on one income when our eldest child was born ten years ago. It's been, and still is, a struggle sometimes as the cost of living sky rockets, but the benefit of knowing that the kids have our attention and are not being cared for by strangers makes up for it for us.

  • The Ultimate List of Hangover Cures   15 years 39 weeks ago

My favorite hangover "cure" was taking a super-B ("B 100") vitamin before bedtime with a full glass of water. It won't work if you've gotten sick from an overdose, but seems to work to alleviate most symptoms the next morning.

  • Canned vs. Dried Beans: Which Are Cheaper?   15 years 39 weeks ago

I've got to say canned beans are cheaper for me because they don't languish in the pantry, to ultimately have your husband attempt to add dried peas to the hamburger helper because he doesn't know how to cook them. And then throwing the rest of them away in an attempt for THAT particular catastrophe to happen again.

  • 5 Ways to Spend Less on Fido and Fluffy   15 years 39 weeks ago

I made my own scratching "box" for my cats. Very similiar to the cardboard center of the at toy recommended, just square. Very easy to make.
    1. Find Corrogated cardboard box.
    2. Cut box into strips about 3 inches wide.
    3. Glue strips together.
Optional 4. Put glued together strips in a shallow box.

I got the boxes from Sams club and used white school glue. Total cost was less than $1. Total time was less than 1 hour, not including time for the glue to dry. I made mine when I first got my cats, about six years ago. They still use it every day.

  • 10 Financial Perks of Marriage   15 years 39 weeks ago

Good article, but there's a problem with multiple cars on your insurance once you have kids that are old enough to drive. My parents have had 2 cars and 1 farm truck for their whole marriage...then when I started driving, even though I would seldom drive, I was considered a full time driver which raised the rates even higher since I was only 16. Good thing I am a girl and a good student, so we got a bit of a discount for that. Just something for families to think of.
