The part about using coupons that are more than the item and having the cashier make the coupon to the price of the item is wrong. This is considered coupon fraud. I have worked at 3 walgreens and have seen several people fired for things like this....just saying. Is it really worth getting a good deal when people lose their jobs for you?
Sometimes being fired is just a relief! I had already been quietly job hunting for a few months when my nasty, abusive boss fired me for being "snotty" to her on the phone. Please. I hung up on her after she spent 10 minutes screaming at me about the job schedule (which I had NOTHING to do with). I spent 6 months getting some more training, and now have the best employer I could imagine!
EFTs are a great option that many people don't even consider. You have actually laid out many good options. Too bad many folks going to to full service brokers don't much about these.
A Roth is also great for paying for unexpected medical expenses. Not that I would recommend that, but I am young and was forking out 15%-18% in credit card interest I used to pay the bills, so I figured it'd be worth it to cash out and pay them off.
Just got a Netspend debit card in the mail. It was unsolicited so I googled it coming across this blog. Following the guest who said to call the Federal Reserve Consumer agency. They told me that I needed to call the Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS) and they could handle the complaint. 1-800-842-6929 I will do doing that first thing in the morning (they are closed now). Thanks for posting so others have an idea of that this is.
Even with calling ahead, you still may find your credit card cut off. Why? Because if you don't buy big items, and suddenly you drop $400 Euros on jewelry in Italy, it raises a red flag.
Wow a 100% approval rating, I can't even imagine that! This was a really interesting post, I can't believe a college president made the list. I know that I always had some sort of problem with my college and the president never seemed to be of help--or even on campus at all!
Great advice. So many times I see people trying to compete with others their same age in the same type of job. It's ashame that we're in a society where it's about what you own.
Adam, they mean having "good credit" meaning a card you pay off monthy and have had for a while. Financial advisors are quick to tell you to cut up all the cards, but you actually need them in order to build your credit.
Don't mothball the credit cards, just think "If I don't have the cash to pay for this now, will I have it by the end of the month?" If the answer is no, don't buy it.
Yeah, this article isn't actually about the Atkins Diet at all. It's about low to no-carb noodles.
I'm well aware of how the diet works, having been on it. I'm aware of the two week induction. But the amount of carbohydrates prescribed during that two week period is not enough for the brain to function. If it were, your body wouldn't go into ketosis.
It is all about demand and supply. Right now employers hands are up and workers hands are down ironically for no fault of theirs. Till the market turns around it is important to suck up as much as you can. I have had not one but three abusive, invasive and degrading interviews. I tried to bring the focus back to the job specification and role definition. You should however decide after the interview whether this is the kind of organization culture you want to be associated with. I have now enrolled in an MBA. At the end of the degree I hope some balance will be restored to the job market and I get more dignified and genuine offers.
Some very good advice in this article, *especially* about dealing with the hotel directly instead of websites and 800 numbers -- but in all candor the advice to avoid the concierge strikes me as pretty bizarre. I'm sorry if you've had bad experiences with them, but as a business traveler for 20+ years, I've generally been very happy with advice obtained from the concierge desk at reasonably good hotels in major cities.
(I'd also be interested in the source for your assertion that concierges are getting kickbacks from tourist traps - I don't think a concierge has *ever* sent me to a restaurant that didn't offer good value for money.)
This is not to say that it isn't a good idea to ask the bellboy, the desk clerk, or any other hotel staffer you meet for advice about where to eat or what to do - and as a few commenters noted, bartenders usually have their fingertips on the pulse of local nightlife - but the concierge's *job* is to understand the needs of travelers and be prepared to present alternatives.
If I need to entertain customers in a city I'm unfamiliar with, and I want to know where an appropriate place would be to take them out for drinks and dinner - I'm gonna ask the bellboy?
If you really like your eyeglass frames but your prescription keeps changing, a great thing to do is find a good prescription eyeglass lens replacement service that will put new lenses into your existing frames. One site that I have used and really like is www.replacementlensexpress.com. Ordering online was really easy, and their customer support personnel was really great. I bought single vision lenses for just $25! The best part is that they deliver in 2-5 business days, whereas most other companies take anywhere from one to two weeks. I think RLE makes their lenses in the U.S. which reduces shipping time.
I agree, the author seems uninterested in being accurate about Atkins. I personally never had any success with Atkins, but it bugs me to see a blogger blithely put out bad information, and be nonchalant after being corrected.
The very low carb, first phase of the Atkins diet, called "Induction", only lasts 2 weeks! During this phase "Carbohydrate intake is limited to no more or less than 20 net grams per day (grams of carbohydrates minus grams of fiber, sugar alcohols, or glycerin), 12 to 15 net grams of which must come in the form of salad greens and other vegetables". After that, "The Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL) phase of Atkins consists of an increase in carbohydrate intake, but remaining at levels where weight loss occurs. The target daily carbohydrate intake increases each week by 5 net grams. A goal in OWL is to find the "Critical Carbohydrate Level for Losing" and to learn in a controlled manner how food groups in increasing glycemic levels and foods within that group affect your craving control. The OWL phase lasts until weight is within 10 pounds (4.5 kg) of the target weight." [These quotes come from the Wikipedia article on the Atkins Diet.]
You are very right here. My family grew up dirt poor. My parents didn't want to work and lived off handouts. My mother got $136 in food stamps for the 4 of us. During the school year we were ok - free breakfast and lunch. During the summer my brother and I would take turns watching for mom or dad just so we could share a can of corn for our breakfast/lunch. Dinners barely fed our family especially when dad thought he deserved a bigger portion cause "he is the man".
I honestly don't know what my family would have done without Salvation Army to supplement our food stamps. People don't understand when these very real decisions are made or even worse, having to be made by children because the adults in the home don't care if the kids eat.
I had never thought of Uglification! What a brilliant idea...but will I do it? I'm not sure. That will require some thought. Thanks for the thought provoking article.
We use hotwire , and we never book under 3 and a half stars, here are our results , Gaylord Palms Orlando 89 a night, The Four Seasons Philadelphia 89 a night , The Westin Columbus Ohio 59 a night, The Westin Cincinnati Ohio 49 a night we have not had bad results and one of these is a one night stay

I too have a NetSpend Visa debit card and I love it. I've had my card with them for over 2 years and have no complaints. Unlike my bank that looks for any reason to charge a NSF fee, NetSpend doesn't charge NSF fees. My husband and I have our paychecks direct deposited and the funds are available two days before the Friday payday and we love it.
I don't understand the hold or block being put on certain accounts. There has to be a good reason. You folks that are having problems need to contact your state's Attorney General or an attorney. Take them to small claims court, state your case and get your money back.
Genius! I started playing a few months ago and have yet to find a good way to combat dreaded pad stench. I wonder if stuffing a couple into my wrist guards after practice would help that, too. They are awful!

I wish we could all stop competing with each other. We would save a lot more money and end up a lot happier.
