My best vday tip, is to skip buying presents. Take the time to write a love letter to one another. Give them to each other over a picnic at the park. Or over sharing a milkshake at McDs.
Dented my lambo :( :( :( ... I worked my arse off for this car only to find 2 weeks later when I took it to Sainsburys some c*ck dented it, its blatently a door ding on the bodyline. I RARELY DRIVE MY CAR BECAUSE I JUST STARE AT IT IN MY GARAGE HALF THE TIME (LOL, I KNOW, I KNOW, BUT ITS MY DREAM CAR) AND I CANT AFFORD TO BE RESPRAYING IT ON A REGULAR BASIS.
What is it with this world? people that genuinely work their arse off and buy something they like, is ruined by some piece of sh!t ... I think everyone that plans to buy a supercar is better off not buying it!
I have the same exact sister! Mine doesn't have cancer yet, but after years of chain smoking I am sure she will soon enough. I have tried several times to get her to save for the future to no avail. She has gotten fired so many times because the "boss has it out for her". It is so frustrating to see someone you care about repeatedly screw up. To cope I avoid the topic of money at all costs. Fortunately she lives far away so I don't see her often.
What if the urge for material consumption isn't about the lack of hope or evidence of stupidity?
Perhaps material consumption is a deeper biological urge...in the face of impending scarcity (psychological or real) perhaps someone is merely expressing the biological urge to hoard, to acquire now - because in the future, that option might not be there. It is forward looking not in a financial sense but in a more deeply instinctive manner.
After the past 6-months, it is no longer completely rational to think that money in the bank (or 401K) is a tangible asset that will be there for the future.
One thing I don't understand is how some people are ascribed (by others) BOTH a high AND a low "deserve level".
e.g. Person A might say that Person B has a "sense of entitlement" and therefore presumably a high deserve level. On the other hand, Person C might say that Person B does not succeed because they have a low deserve level.
So which is it? How can people ascribe opposite deserve levels to one person?
My fav kewpie is the Imax movies and the $5 off at the grocery stores. If you really dig in the retail sections you can find some useful % off deals like for amazon.com, FTD, and other restaurants not listed in the local printed pages. The food coupons are better this year, I guess the vendors are geting desperate. Best of luck to you!
I haven't had an entertainment book in years but, growing up, my family usually got one. My favorite were the coupons for Baskin' Robbins. My family regularly went out for ice cream (Dad grew up on a dairy farm, so eating ice cream wasn't just a family passion, it was also good for business), but it was easier for us kids to convince Mom and Dad (Mom mostly, Dad was a pushover when it came to ice cream) that we should go out for dessert.
I once read a statistic that a large percentage of the American population truly believes they will win the lottery or otherwise hit it big one of these days. I think some people who do not plan or spend with the long term in mind are living their "temporary life," which won't matter once everything changes when they hit it big. This American quirk has also been used to explain why Americans don't seem to mind tax breaks for the rich -- many of us believe that we will be among them one day.
If your wife is like mine she refuses to have flowers because they are expensive. Going to the grocery and picking up a nice bouquet that is inexpensive will may her eyes tear up in joy and not get her heart fired up due to the cost.
The advice could be relevant to readers who want to outperform the market, and those who are interested in supporting companies that they believe worthy of their money. The mention that buying what you love is not going to automatically make higher returns is a general statement that there are no guarantees, kind of like "past performance is no guarantee of future performance," which includes index funds.
The best gift I ever got for Vday was a hand made coupon book from my hubby with vouchers good for foot rubs, back massages, a home cooked by him meal, viewing my favorite dvd with me and a few other things I wont mention. I loved it and he soared up the ladder with that one.
I'm trying to sell a house (yes in this market, I know I know... but I can't afford to have it). I don't really go out to eat or see movies with my girlfriend enough. I'd like to be able to take her out more. The entertainment book would definitely help.
Instead of going out to dinner, go to the place you would have and get take-out from there. Same meal, but you get to eat it at home, peace and quiet, and no tip or drinks to pay for.
In the past money has been short on this holiday and only having a part time job doesnt help (im only 18) but making a gift cards drawing or some wood carving or paintings always show that you care more than something you can buy in a store.
I don't mean to be flippant, but as one who agrees with Bogle, none of this advice is relevant. The vast majority of inventors will be better off simply buying and holding index funds. Why go to all this trouble just to earn inferior returns?
The woman you wrote about: what did she believe that her purchase of more stuff would gain her (aside from more stuff)? What could be more important to her right now than funding her future? It could be any number of things, some of them horrible to endure, some not so much. If you disagree with her prospective course of action, that's one thing. Characterizing her actions, or anyone else's, as hopeless does her a disservice. She's probably HOPING for something different than you are.
I've always believed that hope is grounded in 1) having acceptable and possible options and 2) having the will to act on one or more of those options to create change. The former you can get externally; the latter you can't.
good post

Making photo albums for each other filled with all kinds of fun memories of us together.

Just keep it simple.

I love number 1. Buy what you love.
I learned that if you can't draw what they do with a crayon, don't buy it.

I like to make my own cards, much more meaningful and also bake hubby his favorite strawberry cake!
I love the restaurant section in the beginning. The twofer deals rule, we have found some great restaurants that way.

Restaurant and theater coupons are always good

The 10-year average on Vanguard's 500 Index Fund is -2.73% (higher if you have held since inception in 1976 though); this link will take you to its holdings.
