I wish I could spend the change as fast as it comes into the house!

I don't want to make my change someone else's problem, which is why I recommended (or tried to anyway), asking if change is acceptable, using change for smaller items (my restaurant meal was about $6), and not holding up lines while you count change and/or pour pennies at the self-service cashier.

And there are times that change is still needed: now that parking meters and college students are mentioned, I think of toll roads and laundromats. Thanks for the comments and ideas!

  • Chinese Proverbs About Money and Personal Finance   17 years 47 weeks ago

I love all of those proverbs. So poetic yet so pithy! Here are a few of the sayings that got me thinking whenever my dad cryptically tossed them about:

    1. "It's better to be a big fish in a little pond than a little fish in the big ocean."

    2. "Blood is thicker than water."

    3. "Friends come and go, but family is forever."

    4. "Work when you work, play when you play."

    5. "If you laugh and cry at the same time, you'll grow hair on your butt." (Don't ask. I have no clue!)

I also still don't get "The sheep's hair grows on the sheep's back." I did a quick search on the internet and didn't find anything to shed further light on it. I'll have to ask around. Thanks for the cool post!

Thank you! What are the Chinese equivalents? I know 2. 有钱鬼推磨.

I rarely have more than two dollars worth of changes because I use it. I pay with exact change or closest over the cost whenever possible. That way I never have to deal with pounds of coins.

Commerce Bank (a northeastern US bank) offers a free "Penny Arcade" counting system. You don't even need to be a bank customer (which I am not).

You just dump your coins in the machine and it counts them for you. You take your receipt to the tellers, and they give you cash. Awesome!

While I'm glad you found someone who thought paying an entire meal in cash was cute, I would highly discourage doing that on a frequent basis. I waitressed at three restaurants during my server career, all requiring I carry my own till. While I didn't mind if people paid $5 or less in change (it kept my change purse full), I had some diners who would pay their entire meals in change. I can't tell you how aggravating trying to round up a $61 tab spread across a table can be or how painful it is to carry that much change around during an eight hour shift.

But if you have to go pay at a till, by all means, dump the change.

When the post office used to have stamp vending machines that take pennies I used to buy stamps with pennies.  Now all those vending machines are gone :(

Every time i visit my college-age kids (Boston, Savannah, etc) i bring along my cache of quarters -- SO convenient. i don't carry them on an everyday basis in my purse because they are so darn heavy!
Here in the midatlantic states we have free coin-counting machines ("Penny Arcades") at Commerce banks -- feels so good to walk in with your big heavy jar of coins and walk out with folding money!

Even in this example, if you run a second test on these then you will still have 9-10 positive results that are correct and then .02 false positives. Each subsequent run seriously increased the effectiveness without taking nearly as much out of the correct positives.

Sounds like a very interesting book, maybe I should start reading more on statistics and such, I loved that class in school.

  • Safeway Savings Rally - How I got 9 bags of groceries for $13   17 years 47 weeks ago

Our Safeway (von's, socal) had S & W beans on sale for $.88 each. 25 cans came to $22.00. I was able to roll my coupon over the next 2 weeks and get about 225 cans of beans. Yes we're vegi here, lol. I would give them my coupon and $2 and the register would spit out another $20 coupon for the next day.

Makes a lot of sense. The only time I put anything on my car that didn't come with it was the AAA sticker and a fish sticker that a born again Christian friend gave to me. I guess I'm not territorial about my car. I even let it slide when a woman backed out without looking while I was driving slowly driving through my gym parking lot and she left a dent in my car. My car is already banged up, so I thought I'd do a good deed. Especially since others have been similarly kind to me in this way in the past and I was ever-so-grateful. It felt good to see the look of amazement and relief on her face. : )

  • Bottled Water, Bottled Hype Part 1   17 years 47 weeks ago

Recently I have been doing some research on the debate over bottled water vs. tap water. Public water sources are often not as safe as they appear. In attempting to comply with EPA regulations, municipalities infuse the water supply with toxic chemicals like chlorine to kill pathogens, fluoride to prevent tooth decay, and lye to prevent corrosion of the pipes that distribute water to our homes. Many health experts believe that even low levels of these poisons are responsible for a long list of chronic disease, including cancer, acid reflux, and skin ailments. Most home filtration systems remove only odors and particulate matter, which makes the water look and smell better, but do not remove most chemicals. Water filters do not make tap water significantly safer to drink. To find out what’s in your public tap water, visit the Environmental Working Group’s web site (http://www.ewg.org/tapwater/yourwater/).

The primary concerns of those against bottled water are false advertising and the environmental impact of unrecycled bottles. In states like Maine, where a mandatory bottle redemption program includes water bottles, more than 80 percent of plastic bottles get returned and recycled into new products. In states without bottle redemption programs, more than 80 percent of bottles end up in landfills. Ask your legislators to support the Bottle Recycling Climate Protection Act of 2007. In my opinion, drinking bottled spring water is a healthier choice than tap water, and it is fine as long as the bottles get recycled.

That's funny that they actually did research on this. We have had kind of a running joke that the more bumper stickers on a car the worse they drive. Extra bad if the bumper stickers have aggressive or snotty comments on them.

which dweeb up there was it who thinks that a 7.6 percent profit margin isn't a big deal? especially when it's driving the price of every last one of those products mentioned in the comparison? i would imagine that every last exxon/mobil exec probably owns stock in krazy glue, too -- and can afford to, by the way, because they've stuck it to the american people so hard that their coffers are overflowing. please. come join the party with the rest of us who have cut back on dining out, probably won't take a vacation and are considering changing jobs or moving closer to work.

  • Welcome to the Real World - My Best Advice for New Graduates   17 years 47 weeks ago

One good thing that I've learned to do since I graduated was to start a blog! A blog is really a great way to express yourself, whether you're frustrated or completely ecstatic about life. Even though you don't get to see people in a physical sense, you can connect with them emotionally.

You shouldn't stay glued to your computer every night writing in your blog, but you should have a healthy balance between going out with family and friends and writing about the things you love (or hate)!
