  • How To Protect Yourself From Gasoline Thieves   17 years 47 weeks ago

Just a few things to add. If you do park on the street, try to do it where the side of your car with the gas cap is facing the street. That way, Mr. Would be Gas Thief will most likely have to be on the street side to get your gas.

Oh, and hopefully no one reading this needs the next piece of advice. Along the gas tank replacement route; the new JB Weld (called WaterWeld) will fix it. WaterWeld It's made for marine applications, and if you know boats, you know that the gas tanks don't come out for replacement.

Use some brake cleaner or something to clean around the hole, knead up a chunk of the expoxy, and stick it in/around the hole. It will mushroom through the hole to anchor itself in. It's made for this stuff to, so no worries. MUCH cheaper than a replacement tank too. I just used it to seal up the tank in my '69 VW a few months ago, and it worked great.

We just bought one this week. It was quite a quest to find out which one we needed. My husband finally went to Stant.Com and found a place to enter in the type of vehicle we had to find out the exact part we needed to order. We were in a hurry, so we went to the local VIP auto parts place here, but you could certainly order one off that site. At least it looks like you can to me.

Hadn't heard of the tank drilling thing. That's pretty brazen. Timely post.

  • Is the Wii Fit a cheap workout?   17 years 47 weeks ago

As someone who has spent the last 10 months working on me, I just want to say that BMI is important. More important then the actual weight you are.

Fat (which this calculates) is the number 1 cause of a slew of illnesses. Like heart disease, diabetes, etc.

I do not have the Wii Fit, but dream of this for the future. I do have a scale that calculates these numbers for me. I can say, when I began (girls have a higher bmi then guys) I was at 36.2% BMI. This equated to a 50 year old Metabolic Age. I was 38.

Currently, I am about 20% BMI and 18 years of age Metabolically. And I am really 39 now.

Yet, my weight has only decreased by 25lbs. And by the scale number I would consider myself overweight by about 30 lbs.

The BMI is the important number - cause I now look and feel fabulous.

I think this "toy" will help millions.

Thanks for the review I needed this.

Boy, try being a parent if you seek routines. And nothing makes you appreciate and make better use of your free time than being denied it. You certainly take it less for granted.

  • Is the Wii Fit a cheap workout?   17 years 47 weeks ago

I don't think a Wii is in our future plans, but your picture alone made reading the article worth it. Not to mention, of course, the text. Nice job, an entertaining read, as always.

  • Is the Wii Fit a cheap workout?   17 years 47 weeks ago

I've been using my Wii Fit for about three weeks and I'm really happy with it. I have lost a couple of pounds, though my BMI was normal to begin with. What I really wanted was to improve my posture, strength, and flexibility (basically, I'm slim but in horrible shape), and so far I have been very pleased with the results. I do supplement the daily Wii workouts with about 20 minutes or so of quick walking. I can see how the Wii Fit might not be for everyone, but it's a great system for me.

  • Is the Wii Fit a cheap workout?   17 years 47 weeks ago

My 8 year old, who isn't overweight, just likes to play computer games over outdoor exercise (yes, I limit games and encourage outdoor time), loves the wii fit. He's been getting up every morning at 6 and asking to go on, then plays for about an hour. He does mostly balance and aerobics, plus a little yoga (he loves to earn points for the breathing exercise!). This will be great for those too hot to go outside days of summer (like we just had here in the NE). I don't know how long it will last, but his friends have all been coming over to try it out. I think it's fun, but not enough for me, though.

  • Is the Wii Fit a cheap workout?   17 years 47 weeks ago

The Wii Fit maybe fun, but it's not a substitution for real exercises. You get to lose the use of your legs and lungs faster simply by running up stairs.

  • Being routinely creative   17 years 47 weeks ago

This has been a constant area of exploration for me. Sometimes I need to get back to routine. Other times I need to gear down and let my Muse find me in a hammock. And it is only really in the present that I can tell which is appropriate to where I am now.

  • Realistic Budgeting: The Marriage Saver   17 years 47 weeks ago

A friend told me about this little free online personal budgeting utility, and I have been using it for 2 month now, it is nothing short of amazing, a dream for those who like to be in control of their cash. Totally anonymous, safe, simple and easy to use and very functional.

It's called "Out Of The Dark" and it is available at:

    Happy budgeting.

  • Being routinely creative   17 years 47 weeks ago

If I don't carve out time to be creative, that time will always get eaten up by less useful tasks. I think that creativity--at least beyond the initial spark--requires a commitment. The actual execution isn't always easy and intuitive, so we have to give it concrete boundaries in order to be developed. Like you suggest, a routine can provide those boundaries and create space for creative freedom.

The husband and I are saving for a Wii, and Fit is on our list of potential games. I'm so glad to hear that it actually gave you a decent workout, since that's been my main concern. I'm also glad to hear others are finding it motivating, which is what I need. I mean, yeah, I could just go for a run, but the fact that I could and don't is a testament to my need for more motivating exercise. Thanks so much for looking silly in the store so that the rest of us can look silly in the comfort of our own homes. :)

  • Is the Wii Fit a cheap workout?   17 years 47 weeks ago

I agree with Jimmy in the above post, that I commend Nintendo for coming up with a game that actually helps keep you in shape, instead of sitting in front of a screen doing nothing physical.

My older brother has two kids who have recently discovered Nintendo, Xbox, etc, and he's kinda upset because all of a sudden they're not as active as they were before. Now, with Wii Fit, there's a solution (somewhat) to parents who are concerned that their kids aren't going out to play as much.

  • Travel on Amtrak   17 years 47 weeks ago

"Every time I hear a comment about how we should privatize all of our infrastructure I have to giggle. It sort of exposes someone who hasn't really looked at the issue. Very few needed services that we depend on to actually keep the country running work well as privatized entities. The more critical the worse it is. "

    ITA
People like that have never really taken an economics class and understood the concept of public goods or services that can't be made profitable if it is to be something made available for everyone and not restricted in supply to garner higher value.
If they knew the true history of healthcare, fire and police they know the disaster and shambles it was when in the 1800's fire groups were fighting each other to make money on putting out fires and starting fires to make money. Health was a serious shyster witch docter system with no real certification until professional schools started growing and creating organized hospitals and then women started the socialized nursing for the vast poor in the early industrial towns not unlike a third wolrd shanty town with poorly treated and paid workers. That's where the 8 hour days were fought for and prevention of child labor.
Modern conservatives try to paint it a a wonderland and lie about how we've gotten to the 'civil'ization we have now and aren't like places in Mexico, Guatemala, Bangledesh or Indonesia factory workers...yet.. cause we have it TOO GOOD they say and should compete globally by taking substandard pay and benefits and human rights all for a vibrant economy to reward the few getting over on the backs of the rest.

  • Travel on Amtrak   17 years 47 weeks ago

Just as cheap, albeit a little longer due to short 15-30min stops
every 30-50miles for pick ups and drop offs. But in planning a trip to enjoy the end destination, most buses can travel a bit faster for a longer stretch than rail until Amtrak or a private service
builds tracks for high speed or near and past 55mi/hr.

Took a 130 dollar round trip for 12hr each way from DSM to Toronto, with the worst annoyance being twice passported, grilled as to why of trip leaving US and Canada coming in. When returning passport just customs grilled again, claim any items, TSA bag scanning and then you're back home. Multipassenger transport saving gas and if you pack light and carry everything on or one overhead, no chance of lost luggage or stolen/swapped.

I really enjoyed the humor in this post. I was skeptical about this product until I read all of the above. Now, I think I'll take a closer look. The comment about it keeping track of your progress would be a real motivator for me. Thanks!

...that I don't own a Wii Fit. I did all of this at my local Best Buy! They were very accommodating, I told them I was writing an article and didn't want to buy it just to review it. And yes, I looked like a fool!

  • Is the Wii Fit a cheap workout?   17 years 47 weeks ago

I've had Wiifit for a week now.  The second day I used it I gained 1.8 lbs.  Then every day I lost around 0.4 to 0.5 lbs so I was back at my weight on the first day.  Last night I ate a huge dinner with a burger and chili fries because my hubby smelled like BBQ. (he was grilling bacon & burgers at work !!!!)  Anyway, this morning I gained 1.8 lbs according to the body test so I'm back at where I started !!!! :(:(.  Oh, the games are pretty fun, though.  I really like the step exercise & rhythmic boxing.

  • Bar Stool Economics   17 years 47 weeks ago
    wow

It's a simple point but apparently completely missed. When taxes are cut, those who pay the most get the benefit of a larger amount of money, but a lesser % amount returned. If you don't pay it's hard to reduce the amount. The services rendered are the same for the person who pays or isn't required to pay. And when the money leaves, everyone loses.

There is an underlying perception that the rich guy was evil in some way just because he had money. But there is no indication of anyone being good or bad, just envious. And that is the point. The responses just indicate how effective the politics of envy have been. Being rich or poor never before was associated with being good, bad, happy or sad. Today it is. Being poor is associated with being lazy and unhappy, being rich is associated with being greedy and selfish. Life and people are not that simple.

The lesson is that ingratitude leads to actions and attitudes that become self destructive. Unfortunately this is the motivation for much of today's politics.

While I commend Nintendo for introducing the Wii Fit and think that it's a fantastic concept, I personally don't feel it's worth the expense.

I would much rather get out of the house, ride my bike or jog, and appreciate the sights and sounds of my neighborhood.

Exercise is one of the few opportunities I have to get out of the house - God knows I spend enough time as it is in front of a screen of some sort.

  • Borrowing to Invest: Helpful or Hurtful?   17 years 47 weeks ago

I dislike borrowing money to make money.
However, as a average working American on today wages.... Is there any other way to to come out ahead. To work for cash these days seens to be a losing battle on all fronts reguardless of your income level.
The real problem here is not looking at the whole money pie.
Understand these elements before you begin to leverage anything.
    1) If you borrow money , invest it , make a nice return.... you are wrong to thing you are ahead of the game if you have one creditcard in your bag. Those interest fee will kill any profits. Those tempations to spent are to great to control by anyone.
    2) If you drive a big car , your car payments, insurance, repair costs , registration and gas destroys your future money gains . Every vechicle cost more than it is worth. Every vechicle creates emergencies no one is cash ready for.
3)If you leverage realestate , make a nice profit... you must deducts all your loses which includes taxes, mortgage interest, repairs, and a host of other expensive items.
Yes, most of us need to owe a house, car or creditcard to live in the modern world. But the more you go after borrowing money to make money you will soon discover that its a different merry-go-around just like the working income trap.
You will always beleive more cash is the way to go. Soon you too will be overextended in outgoing money instead of your incoming money.
Balance is the real issue here... just know no gov't in the world has ever acheive money balance and few people will acheive it in their lifetime.
Beware of your wants as oppose to your needs.
Leveraging money is just one more balancing act to stay upright in the cash arena!

  • Remove Car Dents Quickly and Cheaply   17 years 47 weeks ago

Didn't work at all for me. There was a tiny barely visible crease and that may have prevented it. The pop-a-dent kit didn't work either on the small 2" dent, but it did work on the 5" dent. Popped it right out so you couldn't even tell. I'll try the flame method today on the small one. Maybe I'll get lucky cause it is around 93 degrees out now.

...you said "I have no use for people who lack gratitude. No one is forcing you to use CL."

And who exactly forces you to A: Read Wisebread, and B: Rant for 5 minutes?

Seems like this is a pot and kettle situation to me.

I'm not sure about this wii board yet. Over here in the UK it costs £70.
I'm not much into computer games so maybe thats why i'm not that convinced, but i guess if you are then at least you are getting a work out while you play and i'm up for that.

For now i am goinf to stick with my stepper and weights. Lets watch this space and see how this develops. :)
