  • New Postal Rates Are Coming, Should You Stockpile the Forever Stamp?   17 years 50 weeks ago

"The reason is that as far as I know the Forever stamp is only good as a single stamp on a piece of first class mail one ounce or under.  You cannot use it as the first stamp on any mailing that costs above the value of the Forever stamp."

My understanding is different. I had this question because I needed to put stamps on my son's report card now to be mailed in June; a note from the school said that I needed to make sure and put $.84 on the envelope. So, I assumed that two Forever stamps would work; but when someone questioned that 2 stamps would work I did some research. I checked out the USPS site:

The value of the Forever Stamp (Liberty Bell) will always be the postage necessary for a First-Class Mail, single-piece, 1-ounce letter that is in effect on the day of use (mailing), unaffected by any postage price changes.

I also called the USPS to confirm. I was told that the value of the stamp would be whatever that day's going rate for a regular stamp (first-class, single-piece, 1-ounce letter)  and made sure that 2 Forever stamps would be worth $.84. So you can use these stamps on letters weighing more than 1 ounce.

During one of the recent price changes, the Post Office ran out of one-cent stamps so my cost of postage ended up being more than the extra cent.

  • You must file a tax return to get economic stimulus tax rebate   17 years 50 weeks ago

My understanding is that, if you qualify for the rebate and you file a return, you will get your rebate eventually.

They're planning to start processing the rebates for late filers right after they finish sending rebates to the people who filed on time, so I don't expect the delay to be more than a month or two.

When you think about it, it IS pretty odd to take children on a big, expensive trip (for us- half a continent away!) to what? See adults in mice costumes. And ride on a few rides that can take hours to wait for (don't start on the "fast pass" and all that insider gobbledy gook- I don't want to go there!).

  • New Postal Rates Are Coming, Should You Stockpile the Forever Stamp?   17 years 50 weeks ago

I heard about everyone stockpiling "forever stamps" too, and it's a silly idea but one that people who don't really understand inflation would easily latch onto. Because the price of stamps roughly follow the rate of inflation, it never actually costs more to buy stamps as time has progressed. The 2-cent and 3-cent stamps of decades past were just as expensive (if not more!) than today's 41-cent stamps.

Not only is it foolish to stockpile, but why would you invest in what's essentially a bond note with 0% (or less) return? If the philatist in you feels like saving a book or two for collectible value, then go ahead, but you're not saving a penny by stockpiling.

  • New Postal Rates Are Coming, Should You Stockpile the Forever Stamp?   17 years 50 weeks ago

Sometimes, there are SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope) promotions and contests that can be highly profitable. ;) For example, if you used a loophole in the rules of McDonald's 2006 Monopoly promotion, yo could earn a 333% return on your initial investment - 2 stamps and 2 envelopes. If you want to know more about that promotion, google it, or better yet goto slickdeals.net.... When you buy thousands of stamps, every penny that you save is going to matter, and that's where the Forever stamps come in. :)

  • Your stimulus check is on its way!   17 years 50 weeks ago

Iknow it's a good thing that they are trying to do,but it really doesn't help us single mothers out here who are woking our asses off with no kind of help. My check won't be out until 7-4-08 so what good does that really do me. They went into debt just to offer these checks, so what makes everyone think that they aren't going to stick it to us in some other way. people can get excited if they want to but i'm not even going to worry about it. When the checks actually get here, it won't really help because and groceries are going to eat that money up. They tried to help but if they want to help they can try dropping gas prices instead of trying to fix the fact that the president has screwed up royally. I would rather go through 8 more years of a clinton scandal than i would with the crap we are dealing with. I do not believe that money should have went to people with such a high income they do not need that boost. They could have made it to where the who actually get dirty for a living could have come out better. It's like my dad has said they will do anything to protect the rich and spit on the poor working class. Those who get their money soon whoopity do. enjoy it for it will be gone soon enough.

  • Special offer: 250GB online storage account for free - UPDATE   17 years 50 weeks ago

I want to say I appreciate the heads up first and had no trouble opening the account. However! I tried several times on both firefox and IE to upload one picture (695kb) on my dial up connection to this account just for test purposes. Nothing. IE just froze up like a lone baby penguin in an arctic storm. Firfox made a valiant effort of getting about half way before a freeze up and I could never get the whole picture to load. I dont know if it was the sudden rush jamming the site or what. Maybe I'll try again in a few days when the frenzy dies down but if it stays like this even a free account does no good if people can't upload to it. Thanks again anyway for trying to put the word out. Any updates you hear from the site would be appreciated.

There are several requests in your comments about wanting you to reference your material. By not having your sources listed or article referenced, everything you write is merely your opinion and nothing based on fact. I am not saying you are wrong, but I would like to see your references. What you are writing is useless in my research since there is nothing to back up your statements. Am I just supposed to take your "word" for it that you're right? Sorry, anyone who would read this and base their entire knowledge of organic food/drinks on it would be doing themselves injustice.

Come on, Guest, I'd say Margaret's kids have been to Disneyland a lot more than most other kids. They must not live that far away. I only went once, when I was really too old for it, and I'm not planning on taking my kids at all. Yet all my friends are telling me that I'm the "fun" mom because of the (cheap) 4th birthday party I just threw for my daughter.

Our big fun summer project? We're getting compost worms! Does that make me a curmudgeon?

  • How to live with inflation   17 years 50 weeks ago

I believe the bubble has only max 10 years left. That said everyone should be looking into alternative sources to secure their financial futures like Gold and Silver. I understand not everyone has the ability to get Gold at its current price but Silver is very affordable (as of right now) because Silver is just starting a new long-term bull market. Based on facts and simple calculations *no guesswork involved* silver will rise to $208+ per ounce over the next few years.

There is a video from Rober Kiyosaki as he and his colleagues predict that silver will continue to rise against the declining U.S dollar on my website. (link below)

Over the course of the present bull market in silver and gold, probably another 10 years, silver should rise about four times as fast as gold. That forecast arises from silver’s historic performance, especially during the 20th century, as well as its present fundamentals.

The best way to profit from that trend is to swap back and forth from silver to gold with the rise and fall in the gold/silver ratio. That strategy will convert a sterile investment into one that pays dividends, and possibly double the ounces you own over the life of the bull market.

The fastest and easiest way I have seen to date to get into buying silver if don't have the capital or want to deal with financial advisers is The Silver Snowball and best thing if you want to market it you can accumulate silver eagle coins for free. Check out my website for all the details and Rober Kiyosaki predictions for 2008.

  • Find work worth doing   17 years 50 weeks ago

    @Guest (in #11):

I've written a bit about choosing intermittent leasure over steady work here:

    http://www.wisebread.com/retirement-on-the-installment-plan

I don't think it's a crazy idea, at least for people who have a little capital.

  • Find work worth doing   17 years 50 weeks ago

    @Guest (in #10):

Providing for your family is not merely worth doing, its one of those fundamental obligations.  To me, though, merely using the proceeds to support your family doesn't make the work worth doing.  The value comes (or doesn't come) from the work itself.  Does it help people? Does it produce something of value?  Does it use your talents?

I've done work that I didn't think was worth doing, simply because someone would pay me to do it.  It supported my family, but I think the harm it did oughtweighed the good.  There's always another way to support your family.  If your work isn't worth doing, you should find a better way.

  • Gas Is High Enough….   17 years 50 weeks ago

"WE" have some REAL problems here in America. The cost of fuel is just a drop in the bucket compared to what is really happening to us;-( Read the following and see what is happening to us ALL!!!

Charles Lindbergh, Sr. U. S. Congressman
"This act establishes the most gigantic trust on earth. . . . When the president signs this act, the invisible government by the money power, proven to exist by the Money Trust Investigation, will be legalized. . . . The new law will create inflation whenever the trusts want inflation."
(on the passage of the Federal Reserve Act, 1913)

Robert H. Hemphill, Credit Manager of the Federal Reserve Bank, Atlanta Georgia
"We are completely dependent on the commercial banks. Someone has to barrow every dollar we have in circulation, cash or credit. If the banks create ample synthetic money, we are prosperous; if not, we starve. We are absolutely without a permanent money system. When one gets a complete grasp of the picture, the tragic absurdity of our hopeless position is almost incredible, but there it is. It is the most important subject intelligent persons can investigate and reflect upon. It is so important that our present civilization may collapse unless it becomes widely
understood and the defects remedied soon."

    Congressman Louis T. McFadden.
Congressman McFadden on the Federal Reserve Corporation Remarks in Congress, 1934
    The Federal Reserve-A Corrupt Institution
"Mr. Chairman, we have in this Country one of the most corrupt institutions the world has ever known. I refer to the Federal Reserve Board and the Federal Reserve Banks, hereinafter called the Fed. The Fed has cheated the Government of these United States and the people of the United States out of enough money to pay the Nation's debt. The depredations and iniquities of the
Fed has cost enough money to pay the National debt several times over...."

Speaker-Rep. James Traficant, Jr. (Ohio) addressing the House:
United States Congressional Record, March 17, 1993 Vol. 33, page H-1303
"Mr. Speaker, we are here now in chapter 11.. Members of Congress are official trustees presiding over the greatest reorganization of any Bankrupt entity in world history, the U.S. Government. We are setting forth hopefully, a blueprint for our future. There are some who say it is a coroner’s report that will lead to our demise. It is an established fact that the United States Federal Government has been dissolved by the Emergency Banking Act, March 9, 1933, 48 Stat. 1, Public Law

I love some of the constructive ideas here. We live in a national forest near horse camps and such so we tend to go urban for vacations (hence, Disneyland). I was also raised close enough to Disneyland to hear the fireworks at night! (9 PM) LOL

The highlight of my kids' summer last year was the library's summer program. A few hours every wednesday, they got to read, play games, interact with other kids, and make crafts. All for free.

I agree that many things are time consuming! That's what I like about puppet theater. I set it up on the side of the house and let them go crazy with them. Works best if a few other kids get to come over too.

We're hoping California will be able to keep a few state parks open this year. We'll see.

Oh, I remember CETA workers. I lifeguarded the summers I was in college at a pool on a military base and we had this CETA worker who was kind of worthless because she wasn't certified to be a lifeguard. We would give her little jobs to do and she moved so slow that it was way easier to just do it ourselves -- things like cleaning the bathrooms, hosing off the deck, straightening up the baskets that you put stuff in. This would have been maybe '81 and '82.

Now I seem to run into people that work for a little while and then quit and live off the money that they have. I don't get this mindset at all. What about emergencies? what about retirement?

  • Bush's economic stimulus package; What will you get back?   17 years 50 weeks ago

I feel that this situation is completely unfair because the government is excluding tax-paying college students from receiving this rebate. As for me, I have been a full-time student since 2004 and have also had to work since age 16 or earlier. In 2007, my adjust gross income was about $16,000 (mostly from working construction over the summer months) but I am still claimed on my parents tax form as a dependent because they can deduct tuition expenses. Why do I not receive this stimulus package? I payed taxes, I made over the $3000 requirement, and I am an American Citizen. So if being claimed as a dependent means you don't get a stimulus check, why don't my parents get the refund for me? I would like to see how many people fit into this same category that I fall into. Let's be heard and show the IRS that they made a mistake when they wrote these requirements. Email me and tell me your feelings amfiorentini@hotmail.com There will soon be a facebook group and a webpage where you can join the cause.
