  • How To Get Mugged   19 years 9 weeks ago

My friend was walking home at night a few years ago and was approached by a young mugger - she pepper sprayed him in the eyes and he collapsed writhing onto the sidewalk. She ended up feeling so bad for him that she walked him home and then told his mom what he'd done. He got into so much trouble...

  • Is there a secret code to control traffic lights?   19 years 9 weeks ago

So, the other day, I was at my local coffee haunt when a cop car that had made a stop in for a cup of joe pulled out of the parking space with lights flashing. And I'm thinking, "Wow, they got a call." I watch to see how they are going to handle this - pulling out of a tight driveway onto a busy street. People are staring. I'm looking forward the rush that I feel from screaming wheels and screeching siren.

The siren starts. The cop pulls out and makes and awkward left turn onto the street. Cars everywhere are pulling over and getting out of the way. The cop car drives abotu 20 yards. Turns off the siren. Turns off the lights. Drives away normally.

If cops can use a siren and lights to pull out of a driveway because they don't want to make a left like the rest of us, I feel like we should be able to trigger lights any damn way we please.

The high beam-flashing thing used to work in my town too. But because of racing, they've actually changed the lights to operate on some new kind of algorithm, in which the the light never changes in your favor, but rather changes against you. So if you are driving down the street late and night and there's a grenn light ahead, it will turn red as you approach. AND IT WON'T TURN GREEN AGAIN UNTIL ANOTHER CAR APPROACHES THE INTERSECTION FROM ANOTHER DIRECTION. Talk about a waste of time and money.

I'm curious as to what your decision was regarding the pepper spray. This sounds like such a traumatic experience that I think I'm going to head out and sign up for a martial arts class ASAP. Even if I'm supposed to hand over my purse and stuff, I think it might be nice to be able to crane kick somebody's celiac plexus if I had the chance.

He touched the shot glass with his lips after saying he wouldn't touch the glass. I wouldn't have bought him the drink, unless he could pour all of the shot into his mouth without actually touching the glass at all.

A friend of mine taught me another great trick, which I would like to share. Simply bet someone that you can drink 2 beers before he can drink 2 shots. If they accept the bet, tell them there are a few conditions to make it fair, since they are drinking only 2 shots to your 2 beers.

First, neither person can touch the other person's glasses. Second, you can only pickup/touch one glass at a time. finally, the beer drinker should get to drink 1 beer and put down his glass before the shot drinker can start. Once the person agrees, you simply drink your beer, turn the glass upside down, and put it over one of the shot glasses. Since the shot drinker has agreed not to touch your glasses or you his, he cannot pick up his second shot to drink it!

I disagree with the contention that running your tank low on gas uses more fuel. Modern fuel injection systems use a fuel pressure regulator to maintain a set pressure at the fuel injectors at all times, no matter how much gas is in the tank. The amount of fuel consumed is only determined by how much power the engine is producing. Running the tank low on gas should actually reduce the engine's power output since you're carrying less weight around in the car, therefore reducing fuel consumption. I'd say, as long as you trust the fuel gauge in your car and you're disciplined enough to fuel up at the right times so as not to run out of gas, it would be smarter to let the gauge run down to E (assuming there's still a little left when the gauge gets that low), then fill up to a quarter or half tank.

Hi Shannon.  Here's how to bypass the credit card page.

    1. I went to the link Paul provided.

    2. I selected "free download" and clicked "add to cart."

    3. At the shopping cart page I clicked "save and continue."

    4. I entered an email address (one I wouldn't mind getting spam at) and created a password.

    5. At the payment method page (which I guess is where you're at), I click "back to cart" on the bottom right hand corner of the screen.

    6. You will see a listing of the book.  On the right side you'll see a icon called download.  Click on that icon.

    I hope this works!

I followed link for free ebook because a. I wanted to see what it ws about and b. I love free stuff.

After signing up and selecting free ebook this company asks for a credit card. Why do they need the CC when the book is free.

So, I did not get the free book :(

I didn't know half of the stuff on that list. Thank you very much.

i've heard from two sources (one from a science mag and one from a science podcast) that over 50 A/C is more efficient. yes the debate surely continues.

costco claims that their nitrogen air gives better fuel efficiency.

  • Save money on gas + free ebook   19 years 9 weeks ago

I asked a mechanic about that one. He agrees in principle, but mentioned that many people put different size and model tires on their cars due to price concerns, weather etc. So, that one's up for debate too.

  • Save money on gas + free ebook   19 years 9 weeks ago

Ok, it seems we have a debate going on. Which is great. I like to know all the angles. I am putting links to the articles I found my 'facts' from. You can do with them as you wish. The first actually put the A/C - Windows down side-by-side comparison to the test.

    http://www.punny.org/money/grand-financial-experiment-3-saving-gas-windows-down-or-ac-on-part-1/

    Mythbusters - the TV guys

They did a side-by-side test. A/C was less efficient than windows down under 50mph. A/C was more efficient over 50mph. That was on computers. BUT, when they did a side-by-side with two SUVs, driving continuously, the car with the windows DOWN went for an extra 30 miles.

Lifehacker also has a mention of the episode here.

    http://lifehacker.com/software/gas/gas-saving-tips-and-myths-172215.php

    Edmunds says - no difference!

    http://www.edmunds.com/advice/fueleconomy/articles/106842/article.html

So, in conclusion, out of all the articles I read, windows-down trumped A/C, especially as most of the time I'm personally driving at 50mph or below, when drag is not such a concerm. Make of it what you will folks.

Just a note: You should use the tire pressure printed on the jamb of the driver's door. The number on the tire sidewall is the maximum safe pressure for the tire.

Putting in a few PSI more than the driver door jamb says is fine, but you should be aware that it will degrade the car's ride and may affect handling and tire wear.

I know someone else just said it and you refuted it. But on another blog, just like this one, I also read the exact opposite of what you claim - that aerodynamic drag burns a lot more fuel than the compressor and fan in the A/C. I wish I had the link. I'm not claiming that I am right and you are wrong. After all, that could have been mere speculation, but I think there is some debate on this issue and readers should take note. Just a caveat.

Good videos but I hate when they bullshit the viewer by trying to make you think that the people better are not actors or that the cameras are hidden. Look at the lighting, the pro quality sound (don't people in other seats talk in real pubs??) and the way people just warm up to a stranger making a bet with them.

Good tricks - but it would be nice if the video producers were a bit more honest.

  • Free magazine subscriptions for all.   19 years 9 weeks ago

Hi. I would definitely be very 'creative' with the profile you use. If you're interested in those kind of magazines, perhaps put something closer to that in your profession, such as fashion designer, fashion journalism, that kind of thing. That should get you nearer the mark. But to be honest, it's more a case of time. I got fairly irrelevant offers, and still do. Just pick the ones that interest you. You'll get fashion and culture mag offers, I do.

    A/C

I checked that out before I wrote the article. A/C is definitely the worse of two evils, as far as gas mileage goes anyway.

  • Free magazine subscriptions for all.   19 years 9 weeks ago

Wow! Thanks for the great tip, this looks too good to be true. However, I'm at a bit of a loss as to how I answer the prompts on the website, in order to receive the magazines I want. I don't recognize any of the magazines that have been coming up... I'm interested in Fashion and culture, but I don't want (or need) "Kitchen & Bath News". Do I just put in whatever seems relevant and hope that in time, they'll find me a good one?

Skipping the AC in the car and rolling the windows down is just as bad--having the windows open creates a lot of drag, causing your car to get worse mileage. Unless you're willing to turn off the AC AND keep the windows up, it's not really worth it.

Even at $2.20 per gallon the USA has some of the cheapest gas prices in the world. Europe is almost 2-3 times that price.

One missing tip is to consider fuel consumption when you buy your next vehicle.

Do you really need that 4x4 SUV gas guzzler?

The high-beam trick used to work just fine in my home town, and in the town where I went to college.

The trick was to A) note that the light in question had an electric eye atop it (usually, crosstown routes favored by emergency vehicles did have it)
...and B) you had to flicker your high beams at EXACTLY the same rate at which a police car/fire truck's bubble lights alternated.

It doesn't work anymore, where I live. But it used to. Perhaps it's because the high-powered, ultra-bright strobe lights that are common now, are far brighter than car headlights? Might one be able to trigger the sensor with off-road lights? Hell, I don't know.

It's not just an urban myth, though; I used to do it; and my friend Jim got a HUGE ticket from a very angry cop who'd seen Jim trip a green light in his favor using the technique described above.

seen one or two of these tricks done at the pub where i work, always catches someone... (even some of the staff who's been there years!). A good way to get away with these tricks also is be a barman and do it to some of the customers when it comes to the end of your shift ;) you get a nice rewarding drink, get one over on them and probably have a laugh about it. myabe even get brought a few more drinks while they get you to teach them somemore ;)

Actually there is a 100% way to always have the green man. Choose a diagonal path to your destination and one of the lights will always be in your favour.
